Apparently you've never actually read Acts 2. Some people thought they were drunk - NOT because they were out of control, falling down, etc, but because they were speaking as many as 15 languages, creating a great deal of noise. The ones who heard the gospel in their OWN language, however, were pierced to the heart.
Believing1Thomas , fyi Acts 2 is ONE of the divers kinds of tongues. That was ONE kind which was meant to be spoken publicly for THAT exact purpose. Read 1 Cor. 13:1, and 1 Cor 14 and you will get a clue as to what the other KINDS of tongues are for. It's an awesome revelation when the Holy Spirit gives it to you.

nick - you need to familiarize yourself with the concept of CONTEXT. You can't take verses out of context to support your previously decided ideas. Your ideas need to be driven by scripture in context. Pay close attention to the context of the Corinthians & their habits. They were carnal, meaning WORDLY. Paul goes on to explain the appropriate use of tongues in 1 Cor 12 & 14.
In Acts 2, the tongues-speakers spoke in known languages, not some dubious angelic language.
Thats the thing is people DON'T look into the whole of the context, they reiterate what their pastors taught them. If you look in CONTEXT with 1 Cor 12 it says DIVERS KINDS (not just one kind, not just one TYPE of tongues) 1 Cor 13:1 even mentions tongues of men AND of angels..1 Cor 14:2 mentions an UNKNOWN tongue where it's NOT meant to speak it publicly like in Acts 2. Right there 2 divers kinds..and there are 2 more mentioned in 1 Cor. 14 alone. Read your bible people and let GOD reveal it.
There is no difference between the word for tongues in Acts 2 and the word for tongues in 1 Corinthians. In Acts 2, it referred to the dozen or so languages spoken by the Jews present for Passover from different countries. Same exact word in bot passages.

Lets move on..1 Cor 14:27 speaks of ANOTHER KIND of tongue where it IS to be spoken publicly and interpreted by another. From that alone we can see there are at least 4 DIVERS KINDS of tongues or divers purposes to them.
I've read it many times. You take small passages out of context & ignore the specific instructions about the use of tongues in an assembly of believers. You ignore the place of tongues and the status of tongues.
I just quoted 4 different specific uses of the DIVERS KINDS of tongues including the famous one about having an interpreter. We need to look at ALL of these aspects and actually have faith enough to start practicing these things and growing in these things including all the other gifts of the Holy Spirit of course in accordance with the fruit of the Spirit.
Its also interesting to note (without forgetting or skirting around the fact that there are DIVERS KINDS of tongues) that in Acts it seems that 2 common things happened when people were baptized with the Holy Spirit and that is that these brand new beleivers BOTH spake with tongues AND prophesied without any training or anything simply moved by the HOLY GHOST. That is AWESOME.
but the greatest of these is LOVE. What would God's love do? What did JESUS do when He had compassion on them and saw them as sheep having NO SHEPHERD??? HE HEALED THEM ALL, He preached the gospel of the KINGDOM, he cast out devils. He didn't just give them a nice little religious sermon but actually BACKED HIS WORD WITH HIS POWER. THAT is love. @nicknchrist Why move on? Acts 2 was a sign for unbelievers. You see metion in 1 Cor 14 of tongues, not as a "prayer language" but simply speaking. The restrictions are clear - 2 or 3 at the most and there MUST be an interpretation. There is no difference between the word for tongues in Acts 2 and 1 Cor 14. "Divers" is a KJV word from the 1600's - no relevance here. There aren't different kinds of tongues.

Apparently you've never actually read Acts 2. Some people thought they were drunk - NOT because they were out of control, falling down, etc, but because they were speaking as many as 15 languages, creating a great deal of noise. The ones who heard the gospel in their OWN language, however, were pierced to the heart.

Believing1Thomas , fyi Acts 2 is ONE of the divers kinds of tongues. That was ONE kind which was meant to be spoken publicly for THAT exact purpose. Read 1 Cor. 13:1, and 1 Cor 14 and you will get a clue as to what the other KINDS of tongues are for. It's an awesome revelation when the Holy Spirit gives it to you.

nick - you need to familiarize yourself with the concept of CONTEXT. You can't take verses out of context to support your previously decided ideas. Your ideas need to be driven by scripture in context. Pay close attention to the context of the Corinthians & their habits. They were carnal, meaning WORDLY. Paul goes on to explain the appropriate use of tongues in 1 Cor 12 & 14.
In Acts 2, the tongues-speakers spoke in known languages, not some dubious angelic language.

Thats the thing is people DON'T look into the whole of the context, they reiterate what their pastors taught them. If you look in CONTEXT with 1 Cor 12 it says DIVERS KINDS (not just one kind, not just one TYPE of tongues) 1 Cor 13:1 even mentions tongues of men AND of angels..1 Cor 14:2 mentions an UNKNOWN tongue where it's NOT meant to speak it publicly like in Acts 2. Right there 2 divers kinds..and there are 2 more mentioned in 1 Cor. 14 alone. Read your bible people and let GOD reveal it.

There is no difference between the word for tongues in Acts 2 and the word for tongues in 1 Corinthians. In Acts 2, it referred to the dozen or so languages spoken by the Jews present for Passover from different countries. Same exact word in bot passages.

you don't get it Thomas..1 Cor says DIVERS KINDS of tongues. In Acts 2 it was SPECIFICALLY done out loud by a group of people who had no prior knowledge of these different languages. They had NO believing interpreter by their side to translate for them. It was a sovereign move of the HOLY SPIRIT. I just quoted 4 different specific uses of the DIVERS KINDS of tongues including the famous one about having an interpreter. We need to look at ALL of these aspects and actually have faith enough to start practicing these things and growing in these things including all the other gifts of the Holy Spirit of course in accordance with the fruit of the Spirit.

@nicknchrist Why move on? Acts 2 was a sign for unbelievers. You see metion in 1 Cor 14 of tongues, not as a "prayer language" but simply speaking. The restrictions are clear - 2 or 3 at the most and there MUST be an interpretation. There is no difference between the word for tongues in Acts 2 and 1 Cor 14. "Divers" is a KJV word from the 1600's - no relevance here. There aren't different kinds of tongues.
