I think Maria's continuous deaths symbolizes James's perceived guilt over not being able to save Mary from her illness because he's still under the delusion that the disease killed her. @nirbguest No no. The reason she keeps dying is because pyramid head is trying to make James recognize what he has done. Maria is the one stopping him from doing that and making him stay in Silent Hill. That's the only purpose of Maria is to make James stay in Silent Hill. And the purpose of Pyramid Head is to try to make James see what he has done so he can leave Silent Hill in peace.

Actually, my first impression was that James's interaction w/ her was some kind of illusion & that the body was the same as when Maria was murdered in the hospital & moved there by Mary or Pyramid Head. Perhaps her face was some sort of act of revenge or shame (Mary's jealousy) for trying to seduce James & then to make her look as ugly as Mary was in her final days.
All that's for sure is Mary/ Pyramid Head/ James wanted her to die, so she did.

I haven't played Origins, but I can say that it doesn't matter bcuz SIlent Hill 1 is like in it's own bubble of canon (original thinkers of the plot no longer existed after the first game). From what I could tell, the cult of the town sold White Claudia as a drug to finance their church's search for women able to birth their God. Lisa was one of them probably; after Alessa was sacrificed, Kaufmann was probably bribed to keep her stored in the hospital w/ drugs to get money (continued)
Continuing, Kaufmann probably noticed that Lisa was an addict & made some sort of deal w/ her to hook her up w/ the drugs in exchange to care for Alessa who is half dead in the basement & keep it a secret. After awhile, she was probably losing it (if you saw the tape in the game & read her diaries) & didn't want to do it anymore & possibly threatened to tell ppl (the beginning cut scene of Silent Hill 1) so Kaufmann probably murdered her w/ the fire axe you find in the basement of Alchemilla.
I think he could've hit her w/ the axe or at least something blunt bcuz of the way she bled in the final level Harry encounters Lisa. In fact, I think she ends up a lot like Maria in that some part of her is kept alive by Alessa's powers. Alessa was trying to seal the reality everyone was in SH1 w/ the magic Virun VII Crest (Mark of Samael) bcuz it weakened God, & this was Lisa's task; to represent a crest in the hospital (notice how there's no crests in the hospital unlike everywhere else)
Additionally, if you notice after Alessa loses control over herself after the Flarous hits her w/ the beam, Lisa becomes unstable & starts to bleed in the last level.

Agreed. It's more of a symbolic and emotional drama/thriller rather than a horror. It's just the style and atmosphere of the game is presented in a horror movie-like format.
There's a professional medical term for it that escapes me, but there is a psychological condition where, to cover up for a weakness, a person will start telling lies to themselves until they eventually believe them (and by extension, they will tell the false memories they made up to others to maintain the illusion). James DEFINITELY has this. He made up all these lies, but at the same time, he truly believes them. And he has lied so passionately that he denies the truth until he is shown it.
It could also be that the guilt was so hard that he repressed it all.
I believe that he became close to apathy when he killed her, and after her death when he recieved her letter the guilt came like a tidal wave and he repressed the memories, as well as the rest of the letter.
I would argue that he was getting the idea earlier. It really stinks that they didn't have voice acting for this one line that James had, because I think it's a very important line--it's a line he has right after he leaves Brookhaven hospital. He says, "Mary...are you really here, waiting for me? Or is this your way of taking..."

It's obvious James kills Maria upon first entering this room. I'm amazed no ones commented on the fact that hes not standing anywhere near the door at the start of the scene. Theres your proof right there.
Maria is an abstract version of Mary as created by Samael, the Angel of Death (he's a real-deal too, a figure in Judaism, even though he's not a part of canonical beliefs) which oversees Silent Hill. As such, she lies dead here as a reminder to James (although he doesn't know it yet) of what he's done, that he killed Mary, his wife, even if perhaps justifiably (out of pity for her suffering).
James does not kill Maria though, no. The Town, Samael, does.
The possibility of him killing her is fairly likely. Watch the scene in detail and you'll get the hints. They have some foreshadowing with the previous cutscenes too.
But no ._. Samael isn't in Silent Hill 2 for nothing!! He's in SIlent Hill 1, Maybe you want to say Pyramid Head. But that's only a theory. Maria isn't a "normal person", so it doesn't matter who kill she.

Honestly, the cult really makes the SH1 and 3 stories much more dull and trite. The ambiguous psychological horror of SH2 is much better than the magical cult storylines.
Actually, the god from SH isn't Samael, it's a different entity entirely; a fictitious deity. In Silent Hill 3, Claudia refers to the god as a 'She', and if you listen to the track 'Sun' from the SH3 Soundtrack, it explains the god's birth and purpose and all that.

I noticed that about the Maria here too. Normally she has pink ends, and unless the animators got really lazy and only cut-pasted her image, that stuff is weird.
i thought it had to do with the puzzle that you have to solve beforehand. If you read the description of the prisoners deaths the person executed for arson was initially taken and beaten down because the sheriff had no other suspect to turn to. So seeing as how maria looks like she'd been beaten to hell i came up with this conclusion.
i don't think that really has any bearing on how maria died. maria is james' illusion, how he wanted mary to be and her constant dying throughout the game is another way of james suffering for his actions

It's obvious James kills Maria upon first entering this room. I'm amazed no ones commented on the fact that hes not standing anywhere near the door at the start of the scene. Theres your proof right there.

Maria is an abstract version of Mary as created by Samael, the Angel of Death (he's a real-deal too, a figure in Judaism, even though he's not a part of canonical beliefs) which oversees Silent Hill. As such, she lies dead here as a reminder to James (although he doesn't know it yet) of what he's done, that he killed Mary, his wife, even if perhaps justifiably (out of pity for her suffering).
James does not kill Maria though, no. The Town, Samael, does.

The possibility of him killing her is fairly likely. Watch the scene in detail and you'll get the hints. They have some foreshadowing with the previous cutscenes too.

Honestly, the cult really makes the SH1 and 3 stories much more dull and trite. The ambiguous psychological horror of SH2 is much better than the magical cult storylines.

Actually, the god from SH isn't Samael, it's a different entity entirely; a fictitious deity. In Silent Hill 3, Claudia refers to the god as a 'She', and if you listen to the track 'Sun' from the SH3 Soundtrack, it explains the god's birth and purpose and all that.

i thought it had to do with the puzzle that you have to solve beforehand. If you read the description of the prisoners deaths the person executed for arson was initially taken and beaten down because the sheriff had no other suspect to turn to. So seeing as how maria looks like she'd been beaten to hell i came up with this conclusion.

almost every character in this game besides james can be seen as a perception of his psyche, from laura with her innocence, to angela and eddy both being batshit crazy because they killed people and feel guilty, to pyramid with all his rape/misogynistic shenanigans, and then theres all the metaphors behind the monster characters, maria exists for james to be punished by her dying over and over again, while dangling the carrot of sex in front of his nose
