@BLACKSUNR1SE I'm not looking to pick a stupid youtube tiff, but personally I feel this performance is Deftones in the most pure form. If anything, the studio versions are so clean you lose the real raw essence of the band, which is really rough and violent; it's not for everyone but I've seen them live many times and it might be shocking at first because it doesn't sound like the CD, but I actually think it's suits the sound better. in the end its my opinion and I'm throwing it out there
@DISSODANTS i get the difference. i too have seen them live several times. it is fun and impassioned, no doubt...but it would be nice to have a little of the sonic qualities and control he brings to the recordings to be present live...that's my opinion.

This is my favorite performance I have seen from Chino. The man doesn't give a fuck what you think and I loved it. The energy is punk as fuck. I hate when he sings super clean on purpose. He is the best when he just says fuck it, messes around with people, sings dirty, brings out the beast.
I honestly think because Deftones cover so much ground that their fan base is really broad...you have your korn pantera fans that like the straight foward metal material...(what little of it they do have) than you have the hardcore fans that like their experimental dreamy sonic washes that seperate them from every other Numetal group that they got lumped with in the 90's. thats why I liked SNW I think it was a big fuck you to the lesser of their fan base.

I really think Stef's presence would be a lot more powerful if he used different amps. Marshall's are mostly used for a more classic rock sound. He should use Randall amps, those are made for the kind of metal they play.
i think the marshall is kinda key to their sound, it's a lot warmer than a lot of amps, really helps out on the atmsopherics and melodic parts. ive got a marshall stack, and ive tried engl and mesa stuff, but after playing marshall i really wouldn't trade it for anything else. when you turn it right up, it sounds so heavy but still so warm and full of tone
I saw them in Atlanta at the Earthlink Live place and they opened with this, lights went out and Stephen opened it up as SOON as that first chord dropped the crowd went completely apeshit.

But as mentioned by others, Chino's health directly affects his abilities to sing. On the album version he actually sings the word "earth". In all the live versions he screams it.

Other factors play a roll such as bad habits, possibly age (though for age not much if at all)but overuse on tour also plays a roll asmuch as the weight. I am not pointing to his image to be ignorant or rude.
I pointed it out because for some major weight gain can cause flaws in singing capability because abdominal muscles usually get weaker and mainting long notes are harder so some push to hard to make up for what they lacl Chino is an obvious case. And this performance was at his biggest he has lost alittle and has done much better sence then just check youtube for vids of him doing better they are much recent then this. There are a lot of bad and good performances with him.
listen to yourself talk... now try and remember what you sounded like 10 years ago! im pretty sure your voice has changed and your weight has fluctuated throughout those ten years... same with chino. I give credit where credit is due!

chino is pushing 40. why is he still screaming? white pony was a step in the right direction but then the last two albums have gone back to the heavy yelling shit. they're not 19 anymore. grow up.
for me one of the main reasons i love his voice so much is the contrast between the whispering then a burst of murmered screaming. if he stopped deftones would loose alot of thier unique sound.

I love the old stuff and kinda miss it but I love the changes they make from album to album but Chino needs to care for his voice more often and drop the weight for health it is refelcting on his singing. pour chino. the song's really complicated to sing (as a few other songs from their self titled album as hexagram or when girls telephone boys) and for make things worse, it's played way faster than it's on the album... however, it's a great song and deftones still can make it work live.
The guitar sounds really whiet only because it is a 7 string therefore it is lower pitch and you may be confusing it with the bass and that is what it is suppost to do add the punch to the song
the guitar is too quite, it should be louder than bass and in this concert it is vice versa... also chino dosn't sing as good as he could poor performance :|

for me one of the main reasons i love his voice so much is the contrast between the whispering then a burst of murmered screaming. if he stopped deftones would loose alot of thier unique sound.

same here. I love the old stuff and kinda miss it but I love the changes they make from album to album but Chino needs to care for his voice more often and drop the weight for health it is refelcting on his singing. He has a hard time breathing and then forces out the vocals scratching his voice to often.

pour chino. the song's really complicated to sing (as a few other songs from their self titled album as hexagram or when girls telephone boys) and for make things worse, it's played way faster than it's on the album... however, it's a great song and deftones still can make it work live.

The guitar sounds really whiet only because it is a 7 string therefore it is lower pitch and you may be confusing it with the bass and that is what it is suppost to do add the punch to the song
