The thing is named after VW then retireing designer. Thew car had de fogging windows in the back so you could actualley boil tea in it and it wouldn't get misty.
By all accounts this was actually a superior car to the S-Class Mercedes but it fell victim to one of the biggest marketing blunders in automotive history when Vokswagen decided to give it the VW badge. If they had simply called it the Phaeton, with "Phaeton" being the name of a new luxury division, it would have been a success in much the same way as Lexus was for Toyota. But nobody, not even loyal Volkswagen buyers, wanted to fork over $70k and up for a car with the VW nameplate. Sad but true.
@JackKangaroo1 True but the good thing is a well maintained one now sells for $20k with only about 60k or 70k on the clock. I wouldn't mind driving one, the actual feel of the car means more than any badge can suggest. Even Mercedes Benz and the other German heavyweights made some nasty cars in the past.
@krunal467 only the price but the rolls is much much much better 6.4 liter V12 is better than the 6.0 W12. The rolls 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and the VW in 5.9 seconds
and look at the interior everything is leather love. my own car is an 2006 Renault Grand Scenic 2.0 Four in line. LOVE IT
@kzfive that was true of older vw models, the company at the turn of the century began to improve their quality control. i have three (05 and up vw) vehicles that all have over 100k on them not a single electrical issue. Every car no matter which company has its gremlins.
@kzfive I don't know where you hear that but I (and yes I own a vw) and all my friends that own one haven't got any of these, although one itty bitty problem on the vw passat is the steering system which in 2001-4 models are very complex and if you go off road with it you should prepare your wallet
Sober beauty - how I like my women AND cars. Still, no DVD? Kinda defeats the purpose of all those backseat luxuries if you ask me. Oh well, I forgive her ;-)
You foreigners are lucky your currency is worth more than ours.. A broken cam shaft sensor on these is $3000 USD.. That's more than the average working person's monthly salary.. Transmission is $10,000 alone.. And these cars break often. If they were more reliable, I'd buy one in a heartbeat..
You didnt mention the road noise maintains the same noise you hear in the cabin at the time you sit in it, it remains the same db at 200mph its a bentley and is made on the same bentley production line people under estimate this vehicle but its half the price for a badge difference.
The cheapest one I found for sale in US was for $13k USD. (04 V8).
I think a major factor has to do with the tax, insurance, and general upkeep of the vehicle.. That is why there is such a high depreciation for these and the Mercedes S500 class all costing less than a New Honda Civic.
The main issue here is taxes. We too have high insurance, expensive services and so on. But lets be honest here for a second, cars, booze, gasoline, hookers, snookers is dirt cheap in US. And still u guys are complaining :)
Brilliant. Features except its an a8 with passat exterior another thing is it lacks some Benz tech and BMW style it is also huge a 4 door limo to me its good for hotel taxi service due to immense cargo and legroom the engine is good available tdi and the problem inoticed is the exterior I mean look at those rims they can cause blindness and the plstic buttons ew if it combined all of Benz tech and BMW style for over 100grand man it will kill so now its another a8 cept uglier
LOl at part where he says all 4 windows are automatic :D LK even my old mazda 626 1996 y does have it :D Idiot showing it, but car is really good luxus type ;)
brand new that cars worth ver $80,000. i work at a volkswagen dealership as a mechanic and le me tell you the up keep on these things is out ragus. todo pretty much any engine work on them weather they have the v8, twin turbo'd v10, or the w12 you have to drop the whole engine. i havnt come accross one with the 3.2vr6 or the 3.0 tdi v6 yet. but other than that they are amazing.
This thing is nice but doesn't make any sense. VW must shot themselves in the foot by building this since it's almost an Audi A8 but with a VW badge. Wouldn't that kill A8 sales? Strange...
Ouch would hate to think about how much maintenance this thing would need and what it would cost. Though it is bascially an Audi A8 no? Shame VW quality is so shoddy, if their cars held up they'd be pretty nice.
@MisterWordman thats like saying ur coffee will be hot as long as u keep fire under it. vws arent as reliable as u might think. compared to japanese and now korean cars their build quality and reliability is laughable.
@SKEGZ Ever owned one? If you have, youd know the whole reliability issue is a myth. VWs will run like any other car if maintained properly. Hondas rust out in a heartbeat, Toyotas have sticky trannys etc. Japanese cars arent immortal like so many blindly believe. Every car has its specific problems. Ill admit VWs have had electric problems and terrible auto trannys but no car is perfect.
@Shintsu2....... The purpose for the Phaeton was so the VW division could absorb the developmental cost for this platform and powertrain for Bentley so that new division would be instantly profitable. This is not just my opinion. It's what Ferdinand Piech said. :-) ......btw the interior of the Phaeton is incredible......
So first I must say that I might normally not particularly VW, the Phaeton, however I consider to be one of my top cars.
In a German car show, however, he was considered one of the absolute "flop-car" in automotive history. The presenters described the car as "one oversized VW Passat".
Now, I ask myself how this can lead to so many orders. I get it, after all, day after day because I work at the plant of Johnson Controls, which manufactures the headliner for the Phaeton.
Can we still buy this car, it did good around the world I was told, but not in America, thats because of hollywood and nationalistic pride, VW so far is better than acura, online with Infiniti and a tab below Lexus? so why did it fail, because old people with the money think it is an expensive VW bug???
How is this car underrated? I see why people didn't buy it it looks like kind of like the jetta i wouldn't blame them. But.. I've never seen one commercial for this car . It wasn't underrated it was just poorly promoted.
It's identical to my parents Phaeton....Beautiful car...only difference between this one and the one that my parents have is that they have the 4-seater version. Otherwise...they could be twins.
Volkswagen reinvented the concept of over-engineering with this car. Only VW could dream up a car which could embarrass their offerings from Audi and Bentley. And that W12, how delightfully weird and glorious-sounding. I want one!
lol, you are right, not that I got confused about my own cars (I only have a A-class Merc) but any Rolls Royce had a same ancillary factory as the Bentley. VW some years ago had to give in in a trademark conflict against BMW who had less trademark rights but more in-time control about the engines. I don't know about the new Phaeton but the 2004er could be leased a bit inofficially for very reasonable prices, the satisfaction always seemed to be good but I am total layman and don't know numbers.
By the way I didn't know that it's available in the US. It sells best in China. Sells in Germany are well increasing on very low level compared to S-class, Audi A8 and 7er BMW.
I pass by the factory almost every day. It's all made of gass and delivered by electronic city tramway. Also the Rolls Royce Flying Spur is built in there. In terms of VW service here in Germany you could probably go to Audi (belongs to Volkswagen, Audi has the best brand reputation in Germany in front of Mercedes and BMW) or maybe even to Porsche (belongs to Volkswagen as Bugatti does) but I guess the true sense of the Phaeton is to uplift the Volkswagen image, which is not bad at all im Germany
@wilkas222...it has the tiptronic automatic, which I had in my 01.5 Passat V6 4-Motion, you can play stickshift with the stick (they didn't have paddle shifters now, as in my '08 R32, and more importantly, the shifts were normal sluggish until the DSG came along. (SUPER!). Porsche just went from tiptronic to PDK recently...around '08....
@NissanDriver15...heard a while ago they were going to bring it back, but I think the issue is VW service....someone spending $70,000 plus for a car, expects a more prestigious experience, than the treatment most VW Service people give you, and they'd find themselves sitting in the same dealership with people who are driving $17K Jettas.....Personally, I would love one, but the service the VW provides is horrible compared to what I get from Porsche, which I have, or BMW which I had...
This car is actually a very affordable car for those looking into getting a "new car". Theres a V8 version here for sale for 21k. A W12 might be 25k. Very very cheap car for what it is. Top speed. 201 but limited 155.
Hey kyle do you think this would be a good car for a 16 or 17 year old? I have saved over $4,000 so far I'm 13 and I plan on getting a job when my age permits me. and i thought of getting either a fiat 500 or a Mercedes benz c class buying from my grandfather.

This was a very fine car for its day.
At least in North America, the only serious problem with it was that it was a Volkswagen.
The Phaeton has tons of substance and definitely rivaled its competitors, but its core demographic was too snobbish to see past the VW badge.
