Any advice for someone looking to break into animation? I love watching your videos, just watched 1-20 of the dashkin fxf. I love the frame by frame way you sketch it all and actively think what to do next for each limb and movement. I would love to learn the correct way to do this, are there some base classes, books, tutorials etc. that could get me on my way? LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR WORK!!!
Holy crap man, this dude is my hero! he's the reason im getting into animation. On a side note, This is a product for pure animating right? so does that mean we cant add any interaction into our work?
I want to produce real quality cartoons. I need to know all the software it will take to do that. Obviously Toon Boom and some recording software. Now that Animate has text (Thanks Adam Phillips for your awesome tutorials) I assume I can do all title art and what have in Toon Boom. But will I need other programs or software for the questions I have mentioned above.
Obviously I assume it wouldn't work with websites created with Flash, but would i be able to design a website and host the videos there? (I'm sure this is dealing more with web design, for which I will hire someone.) But basically is Toon Boom compatible to host off websites. Not just youtube and etc?
3: I plan on dishing out serious dough to get this project off the ground. When choosing between Flash and Toon Boom some things worry me. I hear that Flash is more interactive and web oriented. Where as Toon Boom is not. How is that? Is that to say that Toon Boom is limited as to how it's exported? Obviously I assume it c?
@RonnieandMarge There is no limitation with Animate Pro when it comes to creating animation. Please contact Philip Greenstein at Toon Boom to get all your questions answered.
2: Like I said I hope to create a web series with episodes running around 7-10 minutes long. I'm confused as to how Toon Boom works in scenes. Do I save each scene as it's own file and then import them all into one file and then render it all together?
1: I hope to create a web series and I haven't seen any videos addressing music and sounds. Say I record a song on my own or even the dialogue from a script (using different software of course) Is it possible to import that file into Toon Boom and from there cut it up at will and arrange it through out the time line? Also is there more than one sound timeline? Say to import background music and then import dialogue or will this have to be done with another program?
I am new to animation but have been drawing for ages. From what I have animated I'm positive all I need for quality work is a good set of tools, such as either Toon Boom or Flash. My questions for Toon Boom here are;
@gottmospahedengubbar@gottmospahedengubbar I started off using Flash but these days I use ToonBoom for all my personal work. Flash doesn't cope well with large projects so if I must use it, I only use it for small jobs. I use ToonBoom for the serious stuff.
@chluaid Well, there are large projects that are created with flash ( and some other programs), such as Waltz with Bashir. But i know what you mean, i've never worked with big projects as such.
@gottmospahedengubbar He uses both on and off. For all or most of his Bitey animations, which is some of his best stuff (Last of the Dashkin being his latest) he used flash.
@ifureadthisdie that's true, I use both, on and off. My main issue with Flash (apart from the inability to turn the stage like an animation disc and lack of colour management) is its export to video formats, like .mov or .avi. For Flash users, there are some third-party tools to do stuff like this but none of them seem to be the perfect solution.
@chluaid Actually .mov works perfectly on my end. It comes out SWF perfect. Because unlike AVI and any of the other formats, .MOV records the animation, so you need not worry of things like Action script (except a stop command that stops the movie for obvious reasons) and your v-cam not working. Have you ever tried it?
@ifureadthisdie yeah Flash's built-in quicktime export is OK for very simple tasks but if you've tried to export anything longer than a few seconds and more complex than simple tweens, you'll find how limited it is. It even struggled to cope with the simplest movies in my 30Shorts project. Adobe was onto something there, but the feature was never enhanced in subsequent versions of Flash.
@chluaid Well I have experienced frame skip and small lag points but overall it's been able to export anything simple or complex, long or short. But i see where you're coming from. Flash was built for SWF. How is Toonboom's 3D space/z-axis features. I know it has a z-axis, and a built in camera that can move in 3D space but is it fake 3D like AnimeStudios (if you tried that program, and I recommend you never..ever try it)

@KoalaCaptain As Adam explains, interactivity is done using Flash while all the animation is done using Toon Boom Animate Pro.

Other than that, Toon Boom looks FANTASTIC, especially that camera tool.

@RonnieandMarge Animate Pro can output in SWF, FLV and QuickTime so wherever the videos are hosted, you will no issue at all.
