I don't think this is 1996. I am sure it was 1998. I got a webtv brand new from the store in '97 and the plus hadn't come out yet. But a few months later when mine went out, the new model (the plus) was sent to me in the mail.
Ah, fond memories of WebTV. Or MSNtv , rather. Like the time they signed me up for a pay service on my webtv email account without telling me, then shut down my email account when the money stopped coming in, also without telling me. Then they refused to CANCEL this pay service, claiming I didn't have the authority to request this, and continued holding dozens of accounts tied to my webtv address hostage.
in 1997 I had the Oracle NC 1010, made by RCA for like 6 months. It was $300, but they went out of business (with I think a weeks notice) and emailed everyone to return the hardware for a refund, so that was good. It was 28.8 dial up if I remember right and you could run it through your VCR and record all the sites you were on. Yes, I think that there was some porn! *L* Then again, the first "porn" I downloaded was in 1974 in High School on a baud modem teletype ASCII Playboy centerfolds!
I started my internet experience with WebTV. I absolutely loved it. It was so interesting at the time. Sometimes I miss it, If you look, you can still find old pages that were created in Webtv. They look so simplisitic compared to today. I wouldn't trade it for the world really.
I had webtv from 98 till 07. by the time 07 came around, I hated it so much..lol I was tired of everyone ranting and raving about youtube, and by 07, webtv couldnt log onto amazon, or ebay, then craigslist, you couldn't put an ad up, because webtv couldnt read the "captcha" code.
I still have the Sony made webtv, I tried selling it for 50 bucks on craigslist, no takers
@guillermovlogs i still have my sony webtv box yet,my old pc shit the bed i was going to hook up the wbtv, then i called my internet provider they said they ended the contract with microsoft to have the open port for it,yes i miss webtv, surf porn with no worries of getting virus`s.
I had WebTV from 1999 to 2000, it was a brain torture... Java sites did not work on WebTV and shit was slow like hell... Unlike today's Logitech Revue which runs at broadband speed.
I just bought one of these 1996 units for $3000, I'm sure a few years from now it will be worth at least $10,000. It's stuff like this that people don't collect that always end up being worth money. If anyone wants to buy my unit I'd be willing to let it go for $5,000 today.. Otherwise I'll just wait a few years and triple my money.
This was great to see again! I had Sony WebTV Plus back in the late '90s! It was awesome to watch TV and surf the net on the same screen! Also featured wireless keyboard. I had to let go back in 2001 for computer, brings back great memories! Thanks for posting! I would also like to see the Infomercial for WebTV, which convinced me to purchase!
I started my early days on the web; with webtv. Very very limited; but there was the charm of leaning back on your sofa with a wireless keyboard; and browsing large font forums with that elegant gold on dark green background. We used to like the fact of not being hunched over a computer. Now my mac is 1000 times more powerful as a tool but Im hunched over it typing....
i believe it was a infomercial. it was me my mom brother and little sister, they came to the door and asked us questions n all. it was back in the day, my mom worked for the company, let me know if you have any old commercials or infomercials that sound like it thanks:)
I believe it was a, infomercial , maybe 30 mins long , cant really remember, i think it was filmed in hollywood/La county, 1995-1997. if you have it please let me know , cant seem to find it online. been looking for years now.

When I had WebTv, the thing didn't even support Java. Its limitations made you WANT to upgrade to a PC.

I convinced my parents to get this back in the day, and it was FANTASTIC!.. till the bill came! XD
I miss this thing quite a lot actually. It was very fun, and extremely easy to use.
As a kid, I introduced the internet to quite a lot of people with this.
