Even though Tony Greig sometimes seems to exist only to put his foot in his mouth, I like him, as a cricketer, and as a man. And he's quite right, if bowlers are having a go at you (even though it's bloody difficult at times), you have to attack them, and take the fight to them. A great all-rounder, and a good England skipper.

They measure speed now, only for the first 5ft out of the bowlers hand. The ball is measured approx. 14 times in that period and a speed taken. However, the ball hitting the pitch slows the ball approx. 10%. Back in the 70's when Thommo got measured at 100mph - that was timed at the batsman's end, after the ball had bounced and travelled that distance. So add that 10% and his speed is around 110mph. And that was not under match conditions with adrenalin. No-one comes close.

Let alone 2 of them. Jeff Thomson was morelike 170+ & so dangerous. Dennis Lillee was probably 160+ (as he was only clocked after his did his back) & even more so due to his hostile accuracy & his amazing bag of tricks. There is no doubt they are the best opening bowling pairing of all time. They wouldve carved the best Australian side up from the 90's - they were amazing in tandem. Which they were around now. Tendulkar & Lara would have struggled as Gavaskar & even Viv did, Viv is King.

Yeah, I grew up watching Lillee and Thompson, just amazing to watch those fellas bowling in tandem. Lillee was very fast but no quicker than Brett Lee in his prime although a much better bowler of course. Thommo was super quick, probably the quickest of all time with Tyson. Jeff was at least a 165km/r bowler but more like 170km/r plus. He was clocked at 160km/r for the length of the pitch, not like the modern radar that only measures the release speed.

In England we almost at times, seem(ed) to enjoy losing and beating ourselves up after much pre-match hype, especially the papers. Maybe that's changing now, time will tell. The difference between the bodyline series and this series is that there's over 50 years between them. Bowling multiple bouncers in an over simply wasn't "done" before 1932-33, so you can't compare the two series.

I played at only university level but when batting with no helmet, torso protection etc i had one come past my ears when i never saw it well it was a test of character. thank god i never took one either in the "protector" (bumble) or on the conk (gatting). respect all round, and to one of the greatest teams of all time, pre-Packer Australia. now let's get the ashes back !

Exactly. The players being hit during bodyline was incidental, and most of the English team was against it. English cricket was hierarchy based in those days. Larwood etc had no choice but to obey Jardine or not play. Gubby Allen was a Gentleman rather than a player so he could refuse to bowl bodyline, Larwood, Voce, Bowes had no choice. You heard Chappell say that Aus were deliberately trying to hit the batsmen. All because a medium fast bowler got Lillee out with a bouncer. Aussie squealers!

Pretty ironic, when you hear Thompson say we were trying to kill Greig and his bowling bouncers to Underwood, who was really a tailender. I can tell you for definate that Larwood and co didn't bowl bouncers to players like Tim Wall or Bert Ironmonger! And Lillee obviously couldn't handle being bounced out by Greig, medium fast at best, so declared bouncer war because of it.
