Excellent!!! Siepi est décidément la plus grande basse de tous les temps. Sa qualité d'interprétation est unique, bien que sa diction en Français ne soit pas parfaite. Magnifique...!
Although Siepi has a heavenly voice, it is not suited for this type of aria - you need a lighter bass/baritone more suited to baroque singing styles for this kind of delivery.
Cesare Siepi is probably best known for his Mozart performances, including I believe Don Giovanni. He was on the side of the democracies in the World War II period, and then was the lead bass at the Metropolitan Opera 1950 to 1974. His enunciation is precise without being pedantic. He had a diverse repertoire, including Rodgers-Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening" from South PACIFIC.
I am very fond of this performance by Cesare Siepi of Charon's tragi-comic air as he ferries departed souls to Hades across the gloomy River Styx. Siepi has a magnificent voice and great command. I heard this recording about 1955 in the Listening Lab for Harvard college's Music 1 taught by G. Wallace Woodworth. Louis XIV did much to make Lully's operas spectacularly successful at his court. I am glad this recording is now available. John Barrett Forks WA
Quelle émotion!!!

I just feel that Charles Panzera's voice is much better suited to this aria - and yes, it is no more than my personal opinion.

That is probably...to say the least...a matter of personal opinion.
