  • Check out the latest article "The Transition from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0" on basim.ca as I attempt to explain the bizarre outcomes and situations arising from Social Media and the Internet, and what this could mean for us going forward...

  • Almost 5 years later and look at Facebook Apps, the Google Chrome Web Store, etc. Pretty much exactly what he said in the video.

  • web too porno????

  • haha by virus!

  • Daahhh I got mail ! Yay !

  • Daahhh I got mail ! Yay !

  • test again

  • test

  • web 3.0 is social networking in my opinion.

  • Google is a fucking joke.

  • web 3.0 = even more porn

  • This is what Opera, Mozilla and Google are going to do in the future and what they are trying to do right now.

  • web 3.0 is user invented, user innovated programming.

  • pretty good explanation.. i was feeling the same thing... the word " APPS" seems fairly new to the computing world, or at least used more often now.. This video was uploaded 2007,dont know when this conference was held, but 3 years later now 2010, APPS are HUGE in the mobile market. I think Apple/Google sorta lead this trend to developers to make apps, now everyone's doing it. Plus he mentions DATA IN THE CLOUD. aka the 3PAR bid war with HP and Dell.. HELLO? lol.

  • @superduperboyx

    apps is short for applications

  • 1:08 Wahahahahaa

  • Comment removed

  • Soon smarter bots will trawl the net linking our photos and entire life on the net. As things stand it's a free for all, employers, friends, neighbour, enemy's, potential partners, government's etc can make judgements on you.. Who knows how the political, business social culture will change. We all have different attitudes and free to secretly discriminate. As googles ceo, said we are all in for a big shock.

  • Web actually is dynamic.0

So it's not static.Keep on inverting the terms.Best wishes.

  • I'm waiting for Web 5.9..

  • *insert tongue here for web 6.0 experience*

    Who knows :)

  • I wonder if people will ever use this term

  • we'll have beta as well soon.

I look at it that we are transitioning from first gen to second gen, second gen being common formats and 'semantic' content, and the different presentation of websites, much more multi-media rather than just text etc. But even then I don't think its possible to classify the web, ridiculous notion really, its got too many disparate aspects.

  • Ok, so what is Web 4.0 and 5.0? Do you plan any service packs or interim releases for this? Come on... Stop the marketing. Web is web. It's evolving all the time, as the we are exploring new possibilities and inventing new technologies. That's all. There are no web 2.0 or 3.0. There is only THE INTERNET! Nothing more than world-wide computer network. Greetz.

  • sooner or later the internet is going to be like online gaming communities. You build your character and you travel through the internet going to different stores and sites in a 3D world. Its going to be just like the futurama episode where they put on virtual reality suits and go to the internet. So instead of physically going to a store, you log into your "internet" character and visit best buy in a 3D virtual world (the Virtual internet's graphics will one day be as good as the avatar movie)

  • what's so hard about it?

web 1.0: the network that connects people with static content provided by the siteowner

    web 2.0: user provided content

web 3.0: semantically interconnected data provided by everyone from everywhere.

not so hard to understand.. just the basic concepts of how we use the internet.

  • hahaha if his idea of web 3.0 comes true then you can expect a new era of Viruses. And you can also expect me to write some because I am going to make BANK with such an open platform!

  • web 3.0 is a marketing trick invented by non-programmers. xD

  • If there's Gonna Be a web 3.0 then these browsers should be in 3D environment and when browsing for informations, your own IP address will be a 3D character wandering around the cloud then can look for the nearest 3D Character(IP ADDRESS). Well that's just an option though "wandering online"...you can type the "(DOMAIN name/IP Address/3D Character)" where your 3d char. will be in fly position(as in fly while website is loading),,,

But that's just 1 of my Dream thou but it's FEASIBLE...:)

  • Never going to happen. Schools and businesses will see this as some kind of game, and the web will no longer be a quick place to go to get quick information. You'll be wandering aimlessly with your avatar til you find what you need,.

  • I'm a new web design/developer freelancer

    here's what I know about

    WEB 2.0:

    COOL WEB DESIGNS

    100% CSS (TABLELESS) STRUCTURE DESIGN

AJAX POWERED(or u can go for jquery and other alternatives)

    PHP/ASP with DAtabase

fast interactive loading of data send/recieve(not flash interactivity)

    so what is Web 3.0?

  • jQuery is not an alternative for ajax (asynchronous JavaScript and XML) but JavaScript library

  • i consider Eric Schmidt is one of the best brains on earth now .. i like the way he think

  • @Ezzooooo what do you know bout brain?

it's easy to think like dat mann...

just cuz 99% of poeple are dumb they think when they find one from the 1% he is the best lmaaaaooo

    stop plizzzz and run yoself

  • @krazythug971 well that's my opinion .. thnx anyway

  • Web 3.0 FAIL (but Eric discretely makes him less fail)

  • He must be talking about Web Hooks and/or FireFox's Ubiquity

  • according to him web 3.0 is already here it arrived with the iphone or even sooner

  • lol dont think the CEO of google would agree with that hah

  • Joswskey, that's some bull the iPhone has alot of limitations, and to let you know the iPhone accesses certain webpages that aren't social networking, news, or viral video sites that uses flash except Hulu. Have you tried to access any message boards on that shit? Any IRC chatrooms? No

No. It's too much memory and also Twitter can't be accessed on no phone via standard.

  • malware heaven

  • Web 2.0 makes sense. Web 3.0 doesn't.

  • The internet is not the web. E-mail runs on the internet, but doesn't run on the web.

The web is the links between individual documents and programs running on servers. The internet is the structure that makes this possible.

  • Finally on YouTube who has knowledge!

  • Second point: An application is a tool that runs on a computer. That you think an executable on your PC has to exist, is because you don't really understand the stuff you are talking about.

  • Excuse me while I puke.

  • Sounds like theyre talking about web porn and some sex with the words sounding so weird o.o

  • Woe!! i just learned this during my comp science class today!!

    Cant wait!!!

    :D

  • It is a way to track us in everyway. They will be able to keep track of the # of sheets of TP we use when we are on the crapper.

  • He just says some marketing crap. How could I trust an application coming in my inbox?

  • How do you trust FireFox, Myspace... or even Google? that is well known that they was spreed from mouth to mouth... they never pay for marketing to become popular and they have a lot of info about you and all of us, they probably have our souls, too...

  • don't confuse an 'executable' program from an 'application'. by definition mashups IS an application, so you are already probably see those in emails.

And yes, do not trust any executable files in your inbox. :)

  • would 3.0 be classified or linked to Cloud computing? (only just found out about it yesterday)

  • Yes he's talking about Cloud computing. But it's a futuristic look, it's only really to define a version when we've had it for a while.

  • Cloud computing pretty much sucks except for certain specialized applications, like YT perhaps. but it's not useful for the average ecommerce site.

  • SEMANTICS

  • and we own it all, you own nothing, we might just might let you rent it, if you got the credit card and your from a country that we own. I'm being ironic

  • Yet this is almost inevitable and sad, because the man is a smart being but the crowd is a dumb mass constantly manipulated and fought on different levels.

  • web 3.0 to me is the Semantic Web.

  • ^

  • my web 3.5 prediction ? Application companies build web based versions of their software. Even the Desktop will be web based. The Computer will be simply a display based machine that really only needs a web browser.

  • 1999 just called and wants it's prediction back.

  • yes, I've been predicting that since 1999. thanks for clarifying

  • Web 3.0 is Flickr for code.

  • Web 3.0 isn't here yet, transitions are 10-20 year events.

The shift from mainframe to client/server took 20 years (1977-1997). Web took 15 years (1993-2007).

Web 2.0 means UI code+data move around the network - security still has to catch up.

AJAX is a (leaky) placeholder until better protocols, trust models, and designs come along.

My forecast: Web 3.0 means agents flying through clouds of data+apps, using SOA. XML can help.

Following the core computer science technologies will help.

  • Ajax sucks balls, like mongrel and ruby on rails and a lot of other tools. Wake up, web 3.0 is massive convergence of users of many networks without use of a owned-by-company user interface. Try to think of a 3d world where everyone is at reach over any ip device. Social sites suck balls!!! Wake up. Peace.

  • yet your here on a social video site.

  • You dont think it sucks balls? OK then.

  • there is no web 3.0, and you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

  • You should get out more.

  • Because I don't post crap I don't know anything about ? OK then.

  • "there is no web 3.0" you typed it...look up the semantic web and 3d user interfaces online. Look, it is obvious web 3.0 is a sales trick to get people on board, yet it is very real and that is where we are going with online. Just dont go round denying stuff you dont know about.

  • The marketing term is "web 2.0". If you listen carefully, he says: "I think you have just invented the term web 3.0" and he goes on talking about 2.0

  • Yes, we all listened to that part. Thing is...something called the semantic web and massive convergency 3d able api's are being developed and that will make what comes after "web 2.0" wich is obviously a semantic handle for crappy user content generate sites, like this one.

  • Where users like you seem to be missing the point when someone says "look, this generation is based on marketing gimmicks, there is something better coming along". Can you read that and understand it? Because I understood what they said, I see how you are blocked over it, and I am telling you of things to come on the web, and that is the point. Google it up.

  • 3D UIs are only practical in certain applications. None of this is new, it's just caught on a lot more in the business world, and the great increase in the application of ideas of "Web 2.0" allow them to throw that term around everywhere, insisting that this is all new. There are more significant inventions relating to the web than a bunch of user-generated content sites and a wider use of AJAX; this is just more relevant to businesses.

  • 3D GUI's for the web are very new, some of them are still in Alpha stage. Apart from what the marketing people want to inprint, the "all new" stuff, there actually are a lot of new things coming. And yes there are more significant things aside from AJAX/GRAILS, and all those things were ever available on a plat that can handle a truly massive amount of user interface.

  • 3D MMORPGs have been out for a long time now. Those are GUIs, and they are on the "web". There is nothing new about 3D, just about the way they want to apply it. That's what I'm trying to say here. This web 2.0/3.0 stuff is just a marketing term for the way they're applying existing technologies, nothing more.

  • Do a search for stuff like Openlazlo, silverlight, papervision3d, sandy3d, away3d and with a little reading you will be able to catch up on the stugg that 3D MMOPG's were never able to do because of basic faulty design and lack of real interaction without a server connection. This stuff is pretty much alpha/beta for now and you obviously dont even have a clue about what is being talked about. This is not "existing technology" like you state. I wont even go into semantic web here.

  • Uh, Silverlight is just more MS bullshit attempting to look like Mac OS's, OpenLaszlo is a live software delivery tool developed with existing technologies, Papervision3d is a 3d engine using flash, sandy3d is another 3d engine, I'm guessing away3d is another engine you're excited about. MMORPGs had a completely different goal, and that's what you need to understand. Things like OpenLaszlo DO interact with servers, that's exactly how they fucking deliver content.

  • You think 3d engines are new? People have been creating new 3d engines for a long time, and now all of a sudden because businesses choose to apply them in a different way than before, there's a new web? No, it's a new web if you're a user, not if you're a developer.

  • Also, what exactly can they do that "3D [MMORPGs]" could never do? There was no faulty design, you jackass. The games do exactly what they're intended to do. Of course a new 3D engine might be better, but that's why people work on new engines all the fucking time. How does that indicate the development of a "new" web? Technology is all about innovation, new ideas, languages, 3d engines, etc. are developed all the time based off of ideas that already exist.

  • Getting back to your original point, OpenLaszlo uses Ajax, which is existing technology. Innovation has occurred since the beginning of mankind, but all of a sudden we see a bunch of user-generated content sites pop up and people say there's a new fucking internet. Even your friend in his podium there admitted it's just a marketing term, why can't you? As for the "semantic web", it's just simplified usage.

  • The "semantic web" utilizes existing technologies that define data more - hence semantics - like XML or Turtle. It's great, it simplifies things for users, a developer should always strive to make users happy. However, it only appears as something new to the users. Developers understand that it's just the same shit at its core. Anyways, I stand by my original point, 3D interfaces are only valuable in certain applications. You're not going to look for a song name in 3D.

  • Naturally, you COULD accomplish all these things with a 3D UI, but it would complicate things more. While it might be easier for some people who don't type quickly or don't know what the fuck they're doing anyways, for normal people there's nothing wrong with just typing in what you want to search in a text box on, say, Google. For a user like myself, adding a 3D UI would actually make things less efficient.

  • Wow, your so off the beat it's like talking to a shut in ermite from a cave in afghanistan. I was going to post links to what you should read up, so your mind would not stay so shaped by dead paradigms, but sentences like "You're not going to look for a song name in 3D" and "There was no faulty design, you jackass." really state that you are stuck where you deserve.

  • So you didn't prove me wrong on anything here. My point was that 3D UIs are only practical in certain applications, and that video games engines did not possess "faulty design" because they did exactly what they were intended to do. Go ahead and prove anything I've said wrong, though, instead of just pointing out random things that conform to the ideas of "Web 2.0" and telling me I don't know what I'm talking about.

  • Technology in Web 2.0 stays relatively the same, the only difference is that the ideas that come from it - as well as from the semantic web - deliver data in a different manner than before. I am arguing from a technological standpoint, not from a user's eyes. Take a moment to respond to my myriad of posts from before, though - this time with a rebuttal, instead of simply disregarding everything I've said and pushing me aside.

  • So are you basically saying Web 3.0 are Mash-ups!/or the merge of to Api's into a single api. On Social Networking site like facebook, when adding friends they require a Catche. But they give you the option with the click of a button they send you a text message on your phone with a code in which when you input it. You no longer are required to input the Catche every time your trying to add a friend. Is this What your referring to as Web 3.0? or is there a lil' more to it...

  • So why is this only 1'50 ? Where's the rest?

  • one foot and fifty inches?

  • I'm from the European mainland, we use 1'50'' for time-notation as well. Especially when you're like me, active in broadcast-technical things, you use this referring to duration of video and/or audio clips.

  • yeah yeah

  • Good Definition!

  • I thought he explained it [any point which he thought he had] badly actually. He also had essentially a grossly, inaccurate personal definition of web 2.0

The real fact of the matter is is [despite wikipedia having a web 3.0 page] web 3.0 has not being denied yet. No one theory can define it I feel. Web 2.0 was all about social networking and interaction essentially, web 3.0 may very well end up being about mobile computing and social interaction over wireless from anywhere.

  • Also, Ajax isn't an architecture, it's a combination of Javascript and XML

  • Exactly!

  • This comment is my contribution as a user of Web 2.0. May my contribution live long and prosper before being lost behind the comments of the next contributors.

  • Yeah they call it facebook. F8 platform.

  • listeniz . net designed model web 2.5 :) :)

  • oh... and human as operating system. that is all.

  • semantic web, my flowrs

  • andonce we are spreading ideas virally society will grow and change even more rapidly, truth will be exposed to light, bariers will be lifted. i cant wait.

  • Web 10.0 Halo and porn instantly (also plays mp3's) :P

  • top secret web 3.0 I think So :D

  • The Seoul Digital Forum is a Great Event to Attend!

    May 6 - 8, 2008 is next years event...

  • web5.0 = web2.0 + web3.0

  • web4.0 = hdtv+internet+wireless

  • web 3.0 = online applications at little or no cost. (Such as Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Photoshop, Draw, Music Apps, 3D Modeling, etc.)

  • Is it basically Facebook apps that he is talking about?

  • WTF??? Hhhaha

  • yep

  • I dont care what they call it. As long as the amount of porn on the interwebs keeps growing.

  • web 3.0 + underpants + ???? = PROFIT

  • web 1.0 = HTML, Web Presentations

    web 2.0 = API/AJAX, Mass Collaboration

    web 3.0 = ????, Semantic Web + AI ?

  • WEB 3.0 = Mobile/computer ( multiplataform )

  • Looks like Eric & I are thinking the same things, here. Web 2.0 is a classic piece of marketing drivel, but it does somehow summarize a concept.

And out of that concept is a cogent blueprint of the future of the web...
