actually the "doki doki panic" version is the real SMB2, but Fuji TV wanted nintendo to make a game called "yume koujou doki doki panic", so nintendo made lost levels at the last minute so that there would be a "super mario 2". but when nintendo of america didn't like lost levels, nintendo went back to the original prototype of smb2 and released it in america. but nice review!
I agree with this video. Our SMB2 may not be the real SMB2, and may not be as good as SMB, SMB3, SMW, and SM64, but I still thought it was better to have Doki Doki instead of Lost Levels. Doki Doki had a much bigger impact on Mario than Lost Levels.
Doki Doki is a different game than SMB, but Donkey Kong and the 1983 Mario Bros. were different, so whats bad about a different Mario game? Super Mario Galaxy 2 has alot of charecters from Doki Doki. Doki Doki had a bigger influence than LL
Good review!!!!! Doki is the real Mario 2 if you ask me. I never really liked Lost levels because it was way to hard and not in the mario tradition of good solid fun level design, its just so stupidly hard!!!!
I have to say I like both but Doki Doki version I like better. But Lost Levels is worth paying for as well. Not only that but Lost Levels did have level nine as a reward for playing with out using warps. Plus even though you have to beat it I believe like 6 or 7 times you get levels A to D. Finally you can play the All-Stars version on a Super Nintendo or even Wii now and not have to worry about getting killed because you start at the exact area you were at. Example die on 8-4 start at 8-4.
I never even finished The Lost Levels. Your right when you say the Doki Doki version has a lot more replay value and, for me at least, more lasting appeal. It was also much more influential as it introduced ShyGuy, the Bob-Omb, and Pokey. I was also very surprised to find out that the entire game was actually Mario's dream. Story wise, this explains why SMB3 went back to the mechanics of the original, but with a lot more to offer
While I agree with it doesn't matter if it is a Mario or not, Doki Doki Panic was not created by Miyomoto. It was taken from another team to fill in for filler for the public opinion.
FUCK ME??? what have i done wrong? i just like mario games, not some shitty asshole fucking noy-real game!!! doki doki panic was so unpopular, that you haven't touched it, if it haven't includedmario in it !!!

@Carlitonsp1 Lost levels is way way more addictive and you have infinite continues. I beat it when I was 10. It ain't that hard. The extra stages are but the main game is a lot of fun. I wish they would make more mario games like this.
@Carlitonsp1 I gotta disagree here. The original SMB is really easy. I would say Mario 2 plays out the traditional format. It pushes it to it's limits requiring near perfection in spots to pass. Especially the 5 hidden worlds. As someone who experienced the latter part of the 80's (not saying you didn't don't know your age) there were still plenty of people captivated by the original SMB in 1988.
Ya know, people have really betrayed DDP we liked it before we found out its secret. It's what a lot of us grew up with, so why turn our backs on it now?
@RDNintendo You're absolutely right. Also, I have to interject whenever someone calls Super Mario Bros. 2 a "controversy". It was NOT a controversy when it came out. It was one of the best selling games on the console. The only games that sold more copies were Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt (because it came with the system), Super Mario Bros. 3, and MAYBE Zelda. Mario 2 was a smash hit, and anyone who says otherwise is a liar.
I totally agree. I was blown away first time playing SMB2 (aka Doki Doki) back in 1992. It was just so different from SMB and SMB3; it was so unique and exciting. I truly loved that game, and playing the game earlier today (completing every g**damn level) I realised that I still think it's amazing.

I always thought it felt like a mario game. I mean; this was before the time where certain aspects were considered canonical. I mean by this logic Zelda II is not a Zelda game just because it plays differently.
I realise and fully know that Doki Doki was just a character swap; but it has Mario in it so to me it was and will always be a Mario game. And I prefer it to the lost levels by far...
SMB II isn't what we expected at the time but I still love it.
Great review, but I prefer lost levels. I'm not bias because of the whole "not a real Mario game" thing, but I just don't like the game play. It's too slow paced for me.
Very well put together review, I liked it. I remember loving Doki Doki as a kid. I have to agree that Doki Doki feels more a true following to Super Mario Bros despite the details that it isn't the true sequel. Its a thousand times more fun than Lost Levels mostly cause I just don't have the patience for a hard ass hack of the original game. I sooner play Doki Doki than Lost Level any day.
fantastic review! the original mario brothers still to this day remain my all time favorite video games, mario 1, mario 2, mario 3 and Lost Levels. i hated the mario that came out with super nintendo, never got used to it, too many levels. i also love mario kart for super ninentdo, not mario kart for nintendo 64
I grew up on mario 2 to to me it isn't strange. I like all those mario games but dokie-dokey is just SO musch better than the japaneese mario 2. then mario 3 came and kicked ass, but that's another story...
you suck screw your doki doki panic it sucks i would pay 5 dollars not to play it i love the lost levels p.s. toad sucks and if you have trouble beating the lost levels you should stop playing games its easy
OOOOH man SUCH good memories. the american mario 2 remake for the gameboy advanced was pretty much the first mario game i ever played. i was sort of dissapointed because it was different from the ones i'd seen before from my friends and commercials but it was great and i replayed it so many times. in fact, it's the only mario sidescroller i've ever owned!
In Super Mario All-Stars, the only thing that's close to new songs between one and the lost levels is the title card music and maybe the princess is rescued music.
You know, it doesn't make any sense. It's just a game. It has Mario characters. So what if it isn't the REAL game? It's still good. That's like saying Mario Kart must be shit because it isn't a true Mario Game.
i know what u mean but fuck da game! i hate it! so what lost levels is hard!?
u ARE aware that this is an exact clone of doki doki panic! EXACT BITCH! This game is horrible because doki doki panic exists! i know it goes with the story because peach is saved and toads are saved luigi is.... back .....from the.... dead? but if its a clone, its bad. if you have a clone, you are better than that clone!
@Carlitonsp1 Doki Doki panic is a better game. If you have that there's no reason to get the mario clone. I've played both and the original DDP is a lot more fun. You have to beat it with all 4 characters (thus making the warps very very tempting) and you get a real ending not a bunch of BS that negates the whole game. That is my biggest gripe with Mario USA if they had wrapped up the plot better I would feel a lot better playing it not feel like it all doesn't matter because it never happens.
@ChampDinga You are hating a game cause it's a clone of doki doki panic.Well that's how ninendo brought doki doki here in the usa.Deal with it bitch. What a jackass comment.
@ChampDinga SMB2 was our version of DDP. It was never released in it's original form outside japan so your logic doesn't follow. You either like DDP or M2. It's all opinion. I like M2 better but that's because I'm OCD and a an awesome mario gamer. The repeating isn't a problem for me.
I'm not saying Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't an enjoyable game. But the fact remains it's not a true Mario Bros. game. No matter how you try and justify it, it was never intended to be Super Mario Bros 2. As such, it'll always be looked at as the red-headed step child in the Mario series. Ask yourself, if Doki Doki Panic had been released in the United States without the Mario banner, would it have been as successful or as remembered?
It is a true Mario game. Nintendo said that it has been accepted as cannon to the Mario storyline. Doki Doki comes first and then Wart takes over subcon again and this time Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach save the land since Imajin, Lina, Papa, and Mama rescued thier youngest children already and have no reason to return there.
Shigeru Miyamoto was more involved in Doki Doki Panic than he was in Mario 2 Lost Levels. He's the reason the starman appears in the original Doki Doki Panic, as well as the POW blocks and warps.
IrateGamer is nothing but a low talented, overuse-of-special-effects, blatent ripoff that is hogging all of the AVGN's wind. I can say the same for alexander4488 as well.
Doki doki panic was an entirely different and more colorful than the the origional super mario bros and im sure they could have made the lost levels more colorful and better if they wanted. DDP is even easier if you use all the warp zones, w2 to w4, w3-1 to w5, w4 to w6 and w3-3 to w7.
Not bad. You brought up relevant points, compared each game fairly, and actually did some real research. About time someone did a PROPER review of this game after the laughable Bores review.
I Like the gba version better for some reason i dont hate it cuz it realy isnt mario although i like lost levels better but id love if lost level wasi n usa than it could be a one without a num :D
Yeah Lost Levels was hard but I got through it eventually even getting World 9 and also getting worlds A-D. But it was pretty damn hard. You had to die many many times to learn about all the traps and everything..
That's just how people are..let em bitch, cuz even though I found out it was Doki Doki when I was 8, I was a bit dissapointed, but still, I loved this game on All-Stars and Adv. 1. Good review, but I still like Lost Levels-I'm still trying to pass 7-3! XD
The Lost Levels wasn't a hard game to someone who has half a brain, the level you cited, I figured out when I was 10, in a matter of about 12 minutes of playing time, and, it was a great game. While I feel that Mario 2 was a fun game, with a great soundtrack for the day, Lost Levels should've been released over here originally as SMB2, OUR SMB2 could've been the 3rd, and the Legendary game that succeeded these two couldve been the 4th....
Excellent comparative review. DDP or the USA version of SMB2, or whatever people like to call it a million times Better than LL. For a game some people say isn't a real Mario game, a lot of the enemies that appeared are still showing up in Mario titles today.
JUST because he cusses? The Angry Video Game Nerd also cusses all the time, but he actually makes it funny because he does it creatively and with feeling.
Yah I never really cared, course I was 6 lol. Honestly I woulda probably cussed and got grounded more if we were given lost levels 20 years ago instead of (DDP) SM2.
The reason why so many things were the same with SMB2:TLL is probably because it came out so soon after the original and so they still didn't get to use the NES's full capabilities since it was still completely different from other game consoles. Overall, I prefer the real SMB2 only because I like the mechanics of that game much, much more than Doki-Doki Mario. However, I like them both.
fortunately for me, I have super mario bros 1, 2, 3, Doki, and World all in one catridge. What an age to be a mario fan!
Now all I need is Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story...
Good choice, too! Doki Anti-Terrism Drug Distribution Trip-Out has a fresher feel to it. Although I don't remember SMB2:TLL being as hard as you say except for worlds 6 and 8. oh well. Awsome.
Sweet review! Really in-depth detail. I loved when you were going through all the characters in Doki Doki *cough* "The FATASS flurries!" that made me laugh way too much. I own both games and Doki Doki has always been my favourite over the lost levels. Great videos!
I have them both, I love them both, but I had mario 1&2 as a kid (never had 3 T_T) so I had a lovely surprise when I found out about the lost levels and got them on the vc for the first time. And first time I saw a poison mushroom was classic. "Oh, that's different, I wonder what that does......you've gotta be kidding me, FUCK!"
Now the Super Mario Bros 2 we got based on Doki Doki Panic it came to Japan as Super Mario USA and its elements would later end up in later Mario games and they also appear in the DIC Super Mario Bros cartoons from the Super Show to Super Mario World. Now the DIC version of Bowser is a mix of Bowser and Wart which explains Bowser was green and had a crown.
I agree Doki Doki Panic was a good choice for Nintendo to make Super Mario Bros. 2 for us Americans. The original japanese Doki Doki Panic was a famicom disk game that was a promotional game that was the result of Nintendo and Fuji TV. Of course the rest of the world didn't get a taste of the Super Mario Bros. 2/the Lost Levels until Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario Bros Deluxe and when Nintendo made the original available for download from the Wii Shop Channel.
doki doki panik is my favorite game since childhood! and even now!! love it so much. you know there are so many secrets behind. for example you can go down the vertical tubes when you throw lamp n enter door into dark. you can ride the birds to the far end. you can walk on the very top concrete blocks...almost out of the sight from the screen..one straight road
What's with the random screamin'? I hade to keep a real low volume, just 'cause of that. Anyway, 'Doki Doki' rules. Who gives a shit that it ain't a real Mario game. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best Mario in 2D.
both games are great. but withouth doki doki panic there wouldn't be picking up things, some enemies, and more playable characters

Yeah Lost Levels was hard but I got through it eventually even getting World 9 and also getting worlds A-D. But it was pretty damn hard. You had to die many many times to learn about all the traps and everything..

@Carlitonsp1

While I feel that Mario 2 was a fun game, with a great soundtrack for the day, Lost Levels should've been released over here originally as SMB2, OUR SMB2 could've been the 3rd, and the Legendary game that succeeded these two couldve been the 4th....

this is my fav mario game of all tiime and i remember renting it,the colors @ the fun gameplay got me.....thats my shit
mcriss79 2 years ago
Excellent comparative review. DDP or the USA version of SMB2, or whatever people like to call it a million times Better than LL. For a game some people say isn't a real Mario game, a lot of the enemies that appeared are still showing up in Mario titles today.

Hey Chris Bores cusses more than the daily viewer thats why he's cool.
viewer5123 2 years ago
JUST because he cusses? The Angry Video Game Nerd also cusses all the time, but he actually makes it funny because he does it creatively and with feeling.
Carlitonsp1 2 years ago
Nice review. I certainly agree that DDP>LL, although both are obviously a lot of fun.
BecomingPtII 2 years ago
I meant that the message is to people who take that fact as the only factor when determining what they think about Doki Doki Mario.
Carlitonsp1 2 years ago
My problem was with the people who under rate this game purely because of that fact.
Carlitonsp1 2 years ago
People seriously underrate this game simply because of the fact that it is not the original Mario 2.
Carlitonsp1 2 years ago
The perfect Mario game would be a fusion of SM3 and Lost Levels. With updated graphics of course.

Dude, That was one of the best reviews i've ever watched.. 5 Stars :)
Djnuttty 2 years ago 7
Yah I never really cared, course I was 6 lol. Honestly I woulda probably cussed and got grounded more if we were given lost levels 20 years ago instead of (DDP) SM2.

if u have a snes thanu can buy super mario all-stars which has smb1, smb2, the lost levels, and smb3 its awesome
GO4TH557 2 years ago
dude if that was on the vc ud get a game worth 2000 wiipoints for (insert amount for snes here) i think its like 600
how cool'd that be?

SMB:TLL will always be better for me... SMB2, if nothing else, had some great music and was unique, though.

I like Super Mario Bros. 2. It plays different than other Mario games but it is still great fun.

6:54 Another reason to hate Chris Bores is because he does nagative reviews on games that are actually quite decent.
InvaderPet 2 years ago
I don't really care which is better, because I think SMB3 killed them both. Play SMB3. It's awesome.
Zach2235 2 years ago
If you ever try out Doki Doki Panic ITSELF, you will find that you CANNOT DASH, so some jumps are harder to reach!
Ketorulz 2 years ago

Great videos!

i don't hate chris bores but the smb 2 review is defenetly NOT MY FAVOURITE :(

RedPolarBearRanger 3 years ago
I agree Doki Doki Panic was a good choice for Nintendo to make Super Mario Bros. 2 for us Americans. The original japanese Doki Doki Panic was a famicom disk game that was a promotional game that was the result of Nintendo and Fuji TV. Of course the rest of the world didn't get a taste of the Super Mario Bros. 2/the Lost Levels until Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario Bros Deluxe and when Nintendo made the original available for download from the Wii Shop Channel.
RedPolarBearRanger 3 years ago
i have both games and i totally agree with everything you said, great review!
BMBM2008 3 years ago 3
doki doki panik is my favorite game since childhood! and even now!! love it so much. you know there are so many secrets behind. for example you can go down the vertical tubes when you throw lamp n enter door into dark. you can ride the birds to the far end. you can walk on the very top concrete blocks...almost out of the sight from the screen..one straight road

What's with the random screamin'? I hade to keep a real low volume, just 'cause of that. Anyway, 'Doki Doki' rules. Who gives a shit that it ain't a real Mario game. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best Mario in 2D.
GForceOfGroveStreet 3 years ago
I agree, I personally prefer the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic. I respect the decision to make it into a Mario game.
