I dont have anything against helping the poor, but it doesn't help matters when we hear reports of TANF recipients using their funds on cruise ships and in casinos. I'm wondering how in the world does somebody that qualifies for TANF benefits can even afford to take a cruise? How can somebody receiving TANF benefits in St. Louis or Chicago, even afford to run off to Vegas or Atlantic City and live it up on TANF funds? This kind of B.S. casts doubt on the effectiveness of programs for the poor.

You have to take things in context. Take me for instance, I have an lcd tv and two computers. That hardly makes me rich though. I saved up for 5 years to buy my desktop and I built it myself. My laptop the university bought me with my financial aid. My lcd TV was a gift from 3 family members. And even if I sold off all these things I will still be poor. What can I get from them? 1,000, maybe 1,500 if lucky? That's not even enough for 2 months of rent.

I also know the statistics on the poverty, wealth inequality and ability to move up in income in the US vs. other developed countries. WE have it far worse, the poor and working people in general. More poverty, much more inequality and it is much harder to move up in income than most developed countries. We also don't have many of the social programs that other developed countries have.
