Lex's obsession for finding the truth drove him to darkness, along with Clark's lies. Its a pity it turned out that way, even though everyone knew from the beginning they would eventually become enemies.
Lex is foolish. He always blamed other people for his downfall, when in reality it was always his obsessions that drove him to villainy. Yes, Clark kept secrets but Lex certainly kept plenty of his own from Clark. Clark never "turned his back" on Lex. The truth was, Clark was trying to be friends with him again when Lex released three meteor freaks to attack Clark, his parents and Lana to see if Clark really did have some sort of powers. Some friend...
I see Lex Luthor as the true hero. If an alien came down from the Heavens trying to 'save' us, I would react exactly the same way as Lex. People should aim to be stronger, not rely on this outsider to clean up their mess.
@louthegiantcookie... and it's this kind of opinion that makes people raise an eyebrow at Smallville.
When the fans start believing that Lex Luthor is the true hero... some crazy shit is going on. Lex Luthor is VERY RARELY the hero - he's the true personification of a villain 98% of the time.
@Momentum139 Lex Luthor is a humanist, he is a great man who believes that people should rely on their own strength and intelligence. The idea of a 'Superman' is insulting. It would make any sane person feel like a complete failiure.
Lex Luthor, and even Bruce Wayne, are the real heroes. Because they show the potential greatness of the human mind as opposed to alien trickery or hokey mysticism.
Superman is an abomination, any decent person would try to kill him for what he represents.
@louthegiantcookie oh, so this does go beyond Smallville pathos. Nevermind. I won't argue with your comic book characterization. There's better forums for that.
you cant help but think.. if it wasnt for clark lex wouldnt of turned out this way. clark is the only freind lex ever had and clark constanley lied to him over and over again.
@jwb864 Yes, but if Lex found out about Clark he would be a very dangerous threat. Because Lex has a constant dark side to him and will pounce on any chance to betray someone, which for Clark will be too dangerous.
@christina170 I agree Rosenbaum and Welling could play off each other so well, even before this scene. Almost every scene with them was awesome. Welling was good at playing the man who would become the savior and Rosenbaum was good at playing the man who would become the destroyer.
Maybe if clark would have trusted Lex in the first place then nothing of this would have happened, he gave up on lex to soon....

@jwb864 that's true, but if Clark wasn't there, There was Lionel. So it was always lex's destiny to become an evil man, just like his father.
