The whole point is: It isn`t impossible to picturize this book - Although picturizing "the nothing" should be quite "interesting".
But this movie failed to tell the story of a growing up child like Bastian - Bastian is at the beginning this kid who has still enough fantasy to great a whole new "world" but in the end he is just a miserable "grown up" who has destroyed his "dream" by mundane things like civil war, etc..
Here are the main issues Michael Ende didn't like about the movie - compared with the novelization (according to "Das Phantasien-Lexikon" ISBN 978-3-522-20050-9):
- Bastian returns home just after he arrived in Fantasia, without any difficulty to find back into daily grind.
- Bastian brings a stone from Fantasia into reality.
- "Do what you dream!" on Auryn instead of "Do what you want!"
I saw this movie when i was like 4 or 5... actually i think it was the very first movie i saw on a VHS tape, at some forgotten friend's house lol (1985\86 i think). This movie was really important for me because of the scenaries.
I will read the book in the near future.
And obviously one movie "can be" a interpretation of one book. That's why there are movie scripts in the first place. If it was meant to be only about the book, so it should add "this movie was based on {this book}, right ?
The book author doesn't know what he's talking about. I have never read the book, but I have seen the movie when I was a small child, and many times since then. The movie immersed me into it's story like few other movies ever did. It's simply brilliant, and well designed.

well i can understand his frustration and disapointment. But i think the movie is a very good interpretation of Wolfgang Petersens ideas of how to make a film about this book. Something very unique that stands for itself. They could have never make it exactly like the book. Maybe today with CGI fakery. I wonder what Michael Ende thought about the third Never Ending Story movie... which was absolutelly awfull >_>

So a behind the scenes making does, in fact, exist! I always wondered about that. Though I don't speak German, it's wonderful to see these behind the scenes moments. I adore this movie so much. I read about 2/3 of the book. The first half of the book is simular to the movie and wonderful, but I gave up on the book once Bastian got there. The book looses it's spark because there is only so much a person can take of Bastian in the desert...it was just too slow after a while.

I am a teacher. My pupils read the book. THEN, they watched the movie. They were aghast. They were asking "But why? Why did they do that?" Of course - each to his own. Many children in Ende's childhood listened Nazi's propaganda in schools, and it became part of them, the same way the movie became part of you. (I'm just pointing that, the fact that some bullshit can become "part of us" does not change the fact that it is a bullshit).

But please differentiate. The messages delivered by Nazi propaganda & this movie are far apart.

3.The Gmork scene misenterpretation is very similar to goebels propaganda. Neverending storie was partly inspired by Ende's expirience with nazism in his childhood. That scene particulary is gratest abuse of Ende's main idea.They did exactly the thing he was criticizing (lies, abuses, manipulations, misinterpretations - THAT is what is destroying Phantasia, which should be pure and innocent)

Eh klar, Kritik von der intellektuellen Seite. Da waren die Deutschen mal wieder mutig und weiß Gott ich, wie viele Künstler basteln da an einem Film rum ( und das zu der Zeit,...82, glaub ich), einen optischer Leckerbissen zu zaubern, der sich durchaus mit US-Produktionen Messen kann und dann die Kritik.
Michael Ende basically loathed the movie. It wasn't nearly as imaginative as the book and he wanted nothing to do with it. He thought the Ivory Tower was ugly, the Sphinxes slutty and the Childlike Empress kitschy.
It is not just about imaginativity. They missed all basic points of the book and made tipical american bullshit, with cheap american propaganda. Why does Atreju kill Gmork in the movie? And what is the explanation of the Nothing in the movie? In fact, movie, itself, represent that Nothing Ende described in his book.
Ich find schon das sie bei dem Film ein guten Job gemacht haben. Ein paar Dinge fallen bei jeder Buchverfilmung nach hinten, weil es sonst wahrscheinlich das Budget überschreiten würde, und dieser Film war ja auch einer der teuersten die in Deutschland je gemacht wurden.
..dass es zu einer Zeit entstand, in der Special Effects nur auf experimentellem und ungeheuer kreativem Wege erreicht werden konnten. Und Kreativität wurde hier, so denke ich, in hohem Maße bewiesen! Dass Verfilmungen auch von als "unverfilmbar" geltenden Büchern durchaus möglich sind wissen wir spätestens seit Peter Jacksons Ring Trilogie..welche allerdings rund 16 Jahre später entstand!! Der gewählte Zeitpunkt für eine Verfilmung von Endes Meisterwerk war einfach verfrüht!!
Natürlich kann ich Herrn Endes Verbitterung über das Resultat der Verfilmung verstehen, die, trotz der unglaublichen Strapazen denen sich alle Beteiligten aussetzten, der Buchvorlage nicht annähernd gerecht wird. Dennoch - wie viele andere Autoren auch hat Michael Ende sich irgendwann einmal dafür entschieden die Rechte an seinem Wert für Geld zu verkaufen...die möglichen Konsequenzen hätten ihm klar sein müssen. Der Film für sich bleibt ein Kunstwerk, vor allem wenn man bedenkt....
@JadenMalik Ende hatte zunächst große Bedenken in Bezug einer Verfilmung des Buches. In intensiven Gesprächen mit zwei an dem Stoff interessierten Produzenten wurde man sich (vermeintlich) einig über die Form und das Wesen einer Verfilmung. Ende ging auf Basis dieser Verhandlungen von einer adäquaten, künstlerisch hochwertigen Umsetzung aus.
Die Rechte wurden jedoch weiter veräußert, bis sie letzten Endes bei Constantin landeten. Die Übereinkünfte wurden entsprechend ignoriert.

Das ist wohl DER Film meiner Kindheit. Was den Elfenbeinturm angeht, kann ich nur zustimmen. Ohne das Buch damals gelesen zu haben, empfand auch ich auch als Kind die Darstellung der Kindlichen Kaiserin im Inneren der Elfenbeinturm als übertrieben kitschig und unpassend zum Rest des Films.

In the book, Atreyu was a Greenskin, like an Native American but green. Apparently they didn't do that in the movie because the make up didn't seem to good to the filmmakers.
I understand that Ende didn´t like the movie because the intentions of his book were very different. Even when i read the book and saw the movie,at12, i realised that they were different stories, the meaning of the book was very adult, and the movie was only a child fantasy. But the movie remains in the heart of many people as a wonderful film of the childhood. It´s soooo beautiful...
Exactly! But I don't agree with Ende when he says that the fantasies in this movie were rubbish and cheap. But many writers don't like the movies of their books (like Stephen King for example with The Shining).
Somehow he is right, but I never cared about it, when I was a child. The second film was much more a desaster, than the first. I really hated the second film, because it destroyed the soul of the novel and had nothing to do with Michaels Ende's idea.
It's really hilarious how everyone involved seems so ashamed of this "disaster of a project! Even the British stunt men/actors,embarrassed, are "hoping that Shakespeare doesn't hear of this!" The movie will forever be condemned in public but enjoyed privately; as a guilty pleasure. A major reason is that it was superbly directed by Wolfgang Peterson and the children's performances are by no means mediocre. It still pulls at the heart strings in spite of it all.
You know, I felt sorry that Michael Ende didn't like the film version of his story, I thought it was good. I hadn't read the book of it until middle school.
Michael Ende critizises the movie, based on his novel for having too less fantasy. It reminds him of a sparkling disco-world, the ivory tower reminds him of a tv-tower with 3 antennae, the sphinxes of female strippers and the empresses throneroom of a giant bedroom with a hollywood-bed. He calls the movie simply a desaster.

Natürlich hat Michael Ende damit Recht dass zumindest die Essenz der Geschichte im Film hätte rübergebracht werden sollen.
Wolfgang Petersen aber auch die Produzenten mussten einen Film produzieren, der auch in Amiland erfolgreich ist um die Kosten wieder reinzuholen.
Das könnte man nun auch wieder diskutieren, wenn man nur noch Filme produziert dass sie in den USA erfolgreich sind. Was soll das?
Michael Ende war ja in die Produktion involviert und dann hätte er NEIN sagen sollen:

Da waren die Deutschen mal wieder mutig und weiß Gott ich, wie viele Künstler basteln da an einem Film rum ( und das zu der Zeit,...82, glaub ich), einen optischer Leckerbissen zu zaubern, der sich durchaus mit US-Produktionen Messen kann und dann die Kritik.

English Summary:
Michael Ende basically loathed the movie. It wasn't nearly as imaginative as the book and he wanted nothing to do with it. He thought the Ivory Tower was ugly, the Sphinxes slutty and the Childlike Empress kitschy.

It is not just about imaginativity. They missed all basic points of the book and made tipical american bullshit, with cheap american propaganda. Why does Atreju kill Gmork in the movie? And what is the explanation of the Nothing in the movie? In fact, movie, itself, represent that Nothing Ende described in his book.

Ich find schon das sie bei dem Film ein guten Job gemacht haben. Ein paar Dinge fallen bei jeder Buchverfilmung nach hinten, weil es sonst wahrscheinlich das Budget überschreiten würde, und dieser Film war ja auch einer der teuersten die in Deutschland je gemacht wurden.

..dass es zu einer Zeit entstand, in der Special Effects nur auf experimentellem und ungeheuer kreativem Wege erreicht werden konnten. Und Kreativität wurde hier, so denke ich, in hohem Maße bewiesen! Dass Verfilmungen auch von als "unverfilmbar" geltenden Büchern durchaus möglich sind wissen wir spätestens seit Peter Jacksons Ring Trilogie..welche allerdings rund 16 Jahre später entstand!! Der gewählte Zeitpunkt für eine Verfilmung von Endes Meisterwerk war einfach verfrüht!!

Natürlich kann ich Herrn Endes Verbitterung über das Resultat der Verfilmung verstehen, die, trotz der unglaublichen Strapazen denen sich alle Beteiligten aussetzten, der Buchvorlage nicht annähernd gerecht wird. Dennoch - wie viele andere Autoren auch hat Michael Ende sich irgendwann einmal dafür entschieden die Rechte an seinem Wert für Geld zu verkaufen...die möglichen Konsequenzen hätten ihm klar sein müssen. Der Film für sich bleibt ein Kunstwerk, vor allem wenn man bedenkt....

@JadenMalik Ende hatte zunächst große Bedenken in Bezug einer Verfilmung des Buches. In intensiven Gesprächen mit zwei an dem Stoff interessierten Produzenten wurde man sich (vermeintlich) einig über die Form und das Wesen einer Verfilmung. Ende ging auf Basis dieser Verhandlungen von einer adäquaten, künstlerisch hochwertigen Umsetzung aus.
Die Rechte wurden jedoch weiter veräußert, bis sie letzten Endes bei Constantin landeten. Die Übereinkünfte wurden entsprechend ignoriert.

Heutzutage hätte Hollywood natürlich diesen Film magischer denn je verwirklicht, wo sicher auch ein Michael Ende beeindruckt gewesen wäre.
Damals in den 80er Jahren wars leider nicht möglich.
Ich fand ihn dennoch als Kind sehr schön!

Das ist wohl DER Film meiner Kindheit. Was den Elfenbeinturm angeht, kann ich nur zustimmen. Ohne das Buch damals gelesen zu haben, empfand auch ich auch als Kind die Darstellung der Kindlichen Kaiserin im Inneren der Elfenbeinturm als übertrieben kitschig und unpassend zum Rest des Films.

Ende is critisizing the movie, he complains that there's nothing fantastic about Phantasia, that it's too corny and Hollywoodized and that the oracle looks like barechested strippers. LOL. I think he thought that the movie destroyed the books magic.

Well...i love the film..even if there're some things, that Michael Ende described not like this in his wonderful book!
Like that "Moonchild" has black hair and not white, and Atréju doesn't has green skin..
But i love it :)

In the book, Atreyu was a Greenskin, like an Native American but green. Apparently they didn't do that in the movie because the make up didn't seem to good to the filmmakers.

I understand that Ende didn´t like the movie because the intentions of his book were very different. Even when i read the book and saw the movie,at12, i realised that they were different stories, the meaning of the book was very adult, and the movie was only a child fantasy. But the movie remains in the heart of many people as a wonderful film of the childhood. It´s soooo beautiful...

Exactly! But I don't agree with Ende when he says that the fantasies in this movie were rubbish and cheap. But many writers don't like the movies of their books (like Stephen King for example with The Shining).

Somehow he is right, but I never cared about it, when I was a child. The second film was much more a desaster, than the first. I really hated the second film, because it destroyed the soul of the novel and had nothing to do with Michaels Ende's idea.

It's really hilarious how everyone involved seems so ashamed of this "disaster of a project! Even the British stunt men/actors,embarrassed, are "hoping that Shakespeare doesn't hear of this!" The movie will forever be condemned in public but enjoyed privately; as a guilty pleasure. A major reason is that it was superbly directed by Wolfgang Peterson and the children's performances are by no means mediocre. It still pulls at the heart strings in spite of it all.

Michael Ende critizises the movie, based on his novel for having too less fantasy. It reminds him of a sparkling disco-world, the ivory tower reminds him of a tv-tower with 3 antennae, the sphinxes of female strippers and the empresses throneroom of a giant bedroom with a hollywood-bed. He calls the movie simply a desaster.
