Michael Stipe has ties to Athens. It's a small town where everybody knows everybody else. You can meet him shopping at Publix or Lowes or Walmart. It's not a big deal. Georgia is pretty laid back so his neighbors view him as a local boy made good. He's well respected and I think he's cool.
Man, I'm glad I don't have to rely on you to guard my privacy, mrblisterfist. That is cold. Athens is just not that big a town and people have the right to live without intrusion. BTW, we returned there last summer after 17 years for Athfest; I was happy and sad to see everything now. I sorely grieved Al Johnson and the Alps.
THey do!?!?!? Holy crap... one of my favorite bands, and I had no idea they apparently come back to Athens to play occasionally. Yes, if anyone has any information on this, please share!
ok here's the deal : In the good old days when they wanted to put on a secret show they billed as :" Bingo Handjob"
Now, if you see amps and equipment being rolled down the street downtown from their office-----word spreads. If you want to see his house in Athens---go to Grady St (it is the one covered in bamboo....can't miss it)
wow..stipe isnt wearing that ear piece thingue...and its kinda a song they dont play alot...i'm surprised...ohh and bill berry does indeed bring SO much to r.e.m.
Profuse thank you's are in order here! I loved every minute of it. It made my day (heck, month!) to see Bill playing with the guys again... (and whoever filmed it did a great job--nice sound--and they didn't point the camera at Michael and never move it like a lot of people do...)
Incredible! I first saw REM at the i & i club in Athens in 1982 B4 Murmur & seeing all 4 of them playing together again & with the tribute bands was amazing! It was great to see so much $ raised for 2 incredible organizations who do so much in Athens: Family Connection/Communities in Schools athensconnection dot org & Community Connection communityconnection211 dot com! BIG THANKS 2 REM, 2 all the tribute bands, & 2 Jeff Montgomery of athensmusic dot com 4 putting it all together!

It's common knowledge around Athens that he owns several houses in that area. he can be seen walking the streets, people don't hassle him.

I've heard they play under a different name sometimes at the 40 Watt, does anybody know what it is?

Bill Berry returned for this performance, as well as there induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which was in the same week.
They sound alot more driven with Bill back on drums.

I wish the quality was better... "Silence means security, ailence means approval." Pageant is so underrated.

It's incredible how much better their music is when Bill Berry is playing the drums. It was indeed a sad day when he left R.E.M.

I'll echo the sentiments about seeing Bill on the drums again. I teared up and remembered what this band meant to me growing up.

this doesn't look like the same 40 watt club as when I was in Athens in '88.
gbroagfran 5 years ago
It isn't. The 40 Watt has moved several times in its history. This location has been the same for a long while, though -- since about '91, I think.
