The best that can be said about the real-life "Liver-eating Johnson" was that he never harmed a woman or a child. Which is more generous than what the Crow warriors did to him. Unlike the Robert Redford movie, his grave is not anonymous, and his death is not a mystery. Best left to our national attic. He and the Crow Nation carried on this silly war for twenty years. He did mellow out in his later years and probably could have taught out UFC fighters a thing or two about kung-fooing.
@redmancheyenne Of course, i grew up with J.J. and A man called horse, Cheyenne Automn, Soldier Blue,Broken Arrow. I love authentic movies, e.g. canadian Black Robe is most authentic movie on Natives ever, Broken chain/Thayendanegea,Last fo the Mohicans(199?) and The New World too. I do not like Hollyshitwood westerns where Indians are represented without historical background. Tecumseh and Squanto are the movies without good research on so many things.Greets from Serbia
hmm was wondering y u keep looking at mine! obvious u dont know much, lol i have no stress, no drama in my life... and yes u do hate... thats y u had cancer!
crowwoman49 has some very good points. movies have always cut out the indian side of the story and make them seem mean or savages. tho this movie is good dont think its completely factual. i wish the younger generation could enjoy movies like these. instead they want all action and dont want to watch the drama in some movies. tthis is a must see to all thos who havent seen it.
Mirani he WAS the actor in my time..and was the heartbeat of many women. Well, he was the man. Beleive me, your just posting in a different time/era. Back then there would be no need for "is it just me?"
I haven't heard of the book "Crow Killer". I read "Mountain Man" by Vardis Fisher, listed in the credits. Is "Crow Killer" a newer publication of the same book?
I agree with CrowWoman49 AND others. It was a clash of cultures. Johnson knew the rules, but found himself caught in the middle. Thus, the argument between he and the preacher. Johnson knew he'd earned the punishment, but didn't care if he lived or died after losing his family. He knew that if he died then so be it. If he lived, he deserved to. He didn't care about himself any more. It was the way things were and had much to do with the harsh way of respect found in that land in those times.
The only reason why they called Johnson the Crow Killer was because he disrespected the Crow People on the trail of the Sacred Barrial ground taking the army on their land when he knew not too...my grandfather told me a lot about these stories...and there is more too it then what Hollywood put out there. Besides he did something and he paid the price for it....and he deserves it..he knew what he did....thats why he went crazy.....!!!!
Jeremiah Johnson is a very quiet movie that probably would not get made today. This is the type of drama that is no longer written. People are not patient enough to watch a film that 's quiet and the pace is slow and the characters develop slowly. People today don't want to watch a movie that washes over them. They want something that's going to slap them in the face in the first ten minutes. Look at Broadway, nothing but musicals. This type of drama won't "pay off" enough to play on Broadway.
I have the book "Crow Killer" which the movie is based on. His pregnant indian wife did get killed by Crows. The boy Caleb was just added by hollywood.
JJ does indeed kick some ass here - great title - but for those who don't know the film - these warriors have just killed his wife and adopted son, in what we might refer to today as asymmetrical retaliation for his desecration of one of their burial grounds. It starts a cycle of violence that the film mourns - until a kind of reconciliation at the end that you can find on YT under the title of the JJ "Finale."
after that indian busts his ass and starts singing, the song comes on and the singer says what the indian is saying. hes pretty much saying your bringin a lot of trouble to your life....
Absolutly incorrect bro.. the song is his death song.. like holy crap this whitey just wacked all my friends, now he is comin for me and i will meet thew same fate. basically praying to his maker.
I remember that part as well. I think he stopped out of pity and out of the realization of what he was becoming. My dad introduced me to this great film years ago. One of my favorites. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore.

Not a shotgun. 50 caliber rifle. At that range, the effect would be indistinguishable from a modern combat shotgun.

ahhh perhaps it's because he killed alot of Crow Indians, hence the name Crow Killer. Unless you care to share more what Grandpa told you.
He deserves it? If someone killed by wife regardless, I'd take revenge and I'd enjoy it. =)
