Im not sure exactly what you call a ninja but as far as im concerned, Hatsumi Sensei is the only ninja in this day and age. I consider Tactical Force Teams to be more of just that, specially trained groups of soldiers who are sent for a mission above the normal for regular troops.
@jdbeaver91 That is why I made this video and put the title as a question I wanted everyone's answer. So I appreciate your answer. You got your point across and it was a good post. I too respect Hatsumi Sensei very much.
Sorry for the typo's and I didn't mean to offend anyone when I said that I don't think there are Ninja today. Hatsumi sensei has been referred to the last living Ninja and eve if his knowledge is what was used by the Ninja in Iga centuries ago I think of a Ninja as a role that was in feudal Japan and one may study Ninjutsu an the techniques of the Ninja but that does not make one a Ninja. I have great respect for Hatsumi sensei, and the Bujinkan and all martial arts or systems. *REI*
Sorry about such a long comment..darn character restricting. Just wanted to explain my opinion on the matter. As always Rick..great video and I like these topic video's along side of the martial art instruction videos. Just how I look at that topic..right or wrong ;D.
Part 5: In that case even that what's Ninja primary did, blend in, get intel get out sight unseen and report back on what they found out I don't think the infantry unit is a modern group of ninja. They are simply doing performing a role in a possible theatre of war. Even if they are doing similar roles to ninja these techniques ave come down from centuries of military training and even hunting. So it's an interesting topic I just class Ninja as Ninja and the teams of today as what they are :D.
Part 4: For example (At least in the Canadian Forces) if an infantry unit is doing RECCE (RECON) they take off any think that identifies them, any unit markings wallets etc, and they will try to gather intel and get out of the area so stealth would be important. They may have a mask on and will have face paint and be wearing camouflage to blend in. Also they will want to get in get their Intel and get out without be scene or engaging in combat.
Part 3: Personally I don't even think that one who studies Ninjutsu is a Ninja, the and techniques were passed down from generation to generation but there are no ninja today just as there are no Samurai (I know that if you have ancestry in Japan you are considered Samurai). But tactical teams are what they are: Infantry are Infantry, ERT/SWAT are what they are. Armor is just that armor and Special Ops are also just that, and intelligence services have their duty.
Part 2: Also smoke and other means to hide from your enemy has been used before Ninja were known outside of Japan so I think while thinks maybe similar one did not necessarily influenced the other.I would say before the West had dealings with Asia or other parts of the world techniques of warfare or reconnaissance were bound to have similarities regardless of cultures and where they came from.
Interesting topic. I don't think you can take Ninja out of time and context. So I think that modern day military units, ERT/SWAT, or intelligence service units are modern day Ninja. Infantry units today out flank and try to out maneuver the enemy some of those techniques may come from Roman times or before and even be adapted to modern vehicles bu to me that doesn't mean they are modern Roman Centaurus.
Most of western special forces, especially the military ones, spend just a week or two in unarmed combat due to the large quantity of skills they got to learn, like the ninja, in their ways of course, obviously not stuff like high altitude jumps or scuba diving, but other things were quiet similar like camouflage, tactical movements or tactical approach to a target. I think actually that nowadays units more similar to the ninja are special reconnaissance units that [...]
@spartajc have to remain undetected usually deep inside hostile territory and have to observe a target sometimes even from a dangerously close distance. Their members must be able to masterize survival skills, navigational skills and most of all the art of concealment and camouflage, Those units are usually called long range reconnassaince patrols
Any smart warrior, and these guys are some of the smartest, will take the very best of everything they can find, to do what needs to be done. Does that make them what they have taken from, or does the conglomeration become a new thing entirely?
Sure the use of tear gas/smoke and many other special weapons along with various varieties of body armor. Lethal / non lethal weapons etc. Night vision goggles and so forth are all modern extentions of a Shinobi's skill set. I completely agree with you! Narcotics officers and various other officers certainly do not want their faces seen. Just as a shinobi would not want his face seen within the context of being recognized as a shinobi.A Narc wants some kind of anonmity for safety reasons.
Hi Rick one other item that could be considered a modernized ninja style weapon would be the flash bomb to stun, daze & confuse to target. Just as one of the main driving forces behind the evolution of weapons, tactics & weapons was the evolution of body armor we've learned those who don't keep up are soon left behind in a museum. Nothing wrong with history & tradition but as all things every thing has a proper place & time. Thank you for the support also Sir.
Regarding the martial skills then yes they are very similar because like tac teams they customized weapons and equipment according to the mission and the flashbangs and CS used by the tac teams were also used by ninja (budo ryu videos of these are awesome) but the ninja didn't always operate in teams which is why i don't think they are the same.
undercover agents because they were a part of the community much like the agents who infiltrated the mob or motorcycle clubs, so they were hiding in plain sight.
I believe a much more suited modern day comparison would be perhaps an operative within the intelligence services including the broad job descriptions in those organizations which i think fits considering the complicated social structure that existed in feudal Japan not to mention the relationships within the varying ninja clans themselves. The difference would be that the notion of governments doesn't apply, you can also add law enforcement undercover agents into the job description.
Tactical teams in my opinion are not the same as ninja although there are similarities in tactics, hiding identity and yes efficient use of hand to hand combat absolutely but regarding the purpose of tactical teams and that of the ninja, i don't think it's the same. The samurai conducted raids just like tactical teams and some could be considered special forces type units e.g the shinsengumi, they used the same tactics, used plain clothes at times, different weapons used informants etc
I think its a very good analogy! Both of them always have had real missions to complete and not sports competitions to win!! Both train very hard. And both use weapons and keep evolving with their tactics. The list can go on. Awesome video again. Bow.
I would have to say: yes. There's a huge diff. between spartan training, & special forces' training. Most special forces go through & endure training beyond spartan level, w/c is why they're the best of the best. I knew this because of my research w/ Combat Sambo, CQC, & playing a lot of Metal Gear (LOL!), w/c ironically brought me to studying/practicing other arts & be interested in them. Guerrilla warfare is the same thing. Very good points you brought up that would end debates =D!
@Loyal2law I knew this video Jay would have debates with it so long as people are relatively polite with each other I will allow it . If they get super rude with each other than I will remove the comment if I see it. Thanks for the points and watching.
Respectfully. I think even the term "special forces" has also changed over the years. But over all I beleive you are correct. that special forces are modern versions of the shinobi.
@o0oNaturalOneo0o Brian I agree I would have said special forces but a SWAT team would not be classified as special forces such as SAS or SEAL so that is why I used the generic term tactical teams or units. Thank you for your comment. Much appreciated
in some ways they are. ninjutsu is not a dead art like martial arts that say. our moves or kata never change and stay the same since hundreds of years ago. i seen bujinkan moves change in my 10 years. the teachers find better ways and hatsumi also so the scrolls change. hatsumi calls it a living art. just one thing for your title so haters dont say stupid stuff. japan there is no plural. one ninja. 7 ninja. no ninjas. i have 1 shuriken or i have 89 shuriken. no s on the end. peace my bro.
@MOUNTAINOUS Good points Jason , I see in your videos that you adapt all the time. I also changed the title thank you so much for clarifying that for me.
I like to train with knives. I have no use for guns. They have to be aimed and fired. A knife is very handy. I know if i show a knife in public i better have a good reason to do so. Since i am a christian pastor i can not think of one. Either can the police. My favorite knife is my 14 inch bowie. If i show that in public i will end up in jail for being stupid. Or heaven forbid shot. Live in peace and leave the weapons in the training halls.
Knives in courtrooms are dangerous because of the danger of the officer being overcome or wrestled to the floor and the knives taken away from him or her. I have no idea why he was wearing them in plain view. At least hide them in his pockets. You never know when you get a nutcase in a courtroom. It is not an intelligent way for me. A emotional troubled person with a knife in a courtroom. No thank you.
@socks1949 not as dangerous to the cop if he actually knows his kit and paid attention in cqc training, but yes very common mistake and not just in court
Yes absolutely! In question for do the tac teams have the "zen like" mindset... In doing the techniques needed in the context needed, it would be impossible to do them with the efficiency needed without the "zen mindset"...I am sure they are keenly aware that all things come through breathing.... Great video Rick! Keep 'em Comin'!
@Greatbear1982 You are right Joel the snipers alone have to focus on breathing every breath can mean the difference as to where a shot is placed. Thank you for the points and comment.
@Greatbear1982 yes its nice to see people actually know what ther talking about isnt it, and yes even basic miltary qualifications teaches the breathing and importance of the "zen mindset" never heard phrased that way though juss sayin
tactical teams are not same as ninjas. Ninjas are more like burglars. Ninjas do not fight or attack. They kill people in their sleep. The only time they fight or walk up behind people to kill them is when they have absolutely no choice. All ninja weapons are defensive or used to slow people down to get away, if they are detected. They are the most cowardly operatives and their cowardly nature is their most powerful weapon.
@GlockNinja actually they as assassins have plenty of offensive weapons and often did explosive attacks along with the typical stuff you see in movies. Also id like to see you take on samurai with lifetime of training when yer only just brought into the martial arts for personal or family reasons. not too mention most "ninja" were lower class poor farmers and such. learn the history and not just the shit you see in movies
@wepntech I don't claim to be any expert of Japanese history. But it doesn't take a historian to figure out that if you dress in black and sneak around in the dark, that fighting is something you want to do. Even the Navy Seals last resort is to get involved in a fire fight. I hope that a simple farmer who worked hard his entire life is at least physically fit and nimble enough to do what a "Ninja" does. But u right...I doubt if they want to fight "life long trained" Samurais.
@GlockNinja im not an expert either but a student of the martial arts and a soldier so i know and understand most of these things from experience rather then rumor or 3rd person intel or wtvr welse u wish to call it
@GlockNinja Interesting point, as Sensei has mentioned below. But aren't deception/blockades are the very fundamental of battleplans? I don't people show their chests to the enemy to shoot at them just prove their courage! I believe it takes great amount of courage to do what the Ninjas used to do. So by your rationale, the modern day spies can be labelled as "cowards" too. All that matters in a war is winning I suppose. And Ninjas were real warriors!!
@vegdevil I think we are straying away from the topic. Are Ninja's like Tactical Teams? I said no. A tactical team goes into an area with the intention of taking over an objective. A ninja's objective is not to be detected at all. Break in, sneak, kill person sleeping, and leave. That is not what a tactical team does. Have you ever tried to tip toe around a hard wood floor or marble floor in combat boots and tactical gear? They are two different animals.
Yes probably you are right but two knives. Who knows. Maybe he likes to cut the ends off of his cigars. Knives have many uses. Common sense you are right however sir i did not see any cars in the courtroom.
A great thought-provoking video Rick, Great comments here as well!
SpecOps are very much a subset of modern day Ninjutsu, but as warfare and espionage have changed over the years the jobs that were covered under one art (Ninjutsu) have grown into arts of their own. From the parent tree has grown many saplings.
@Harpmaker44 Don for videos I get an idea in my head and try my best to run with it and see how it goes. This is a thought I have had for a while. So I tried to put it into video form today. I have trained with numerous tactical units and also with friends in the Bujinkan and Genbukan and the Duncan group and can see the similarities in how both do business. Some friends in the tactical units train under the Bujinkan and put their skills to real life practice. Thanks for the comment brother.
@Harpmaker44 I like you tube and this martial arts group since we can learn from each other it is a live interactive forum where even if people do not post videos they still have a wealth of knowledge and post amazing comments for others to read. I like your quote "From the parent tree has grown many saplings"
Was not ninja techniques made for warfare. The special units have just stepped up the methods of the tradition ninja effective strikes. I saw something funny once in a courtroom. The attending police officer was wearing two folding knives in little pockets just below his regular pants pockets. I have never seen that before. The fellow was probably from a special unit. Silent death.
@socks1949 maybe ive seen spec ops use them from time to time and in court room may be very effective rather then risking shooting civilians or taseing the wrong person its pretty hard too miss yer target with knives unless u throw em which is just plain stupid unless you are trained to do so and have another set too use or some other backup weapon
Thank you very much for recommending my channel. Featured you as well.
As for the modern tac teams and the ancient ninjas : that is tricky. In gear, techniques, purpose, prefernece of stealth and so forth I think the modern tac teams are the legit successors of the old ninjas.
But from what I understand one key feature of old ninjas was that they where also proficient in certain breathing exercises and meditative practices. To the best of my knowledge such aspects are not TO BE CONTD
@blacksilkblacksilk Martin very good points that you brought up I like how you mentioned the meditation and such however I have some friends on tactical teams who have incredible pain tolerance through training and meditation. I think like you that some things are classified.
I think the assumption that is most often wrong (thanks hollywood) is that the Ninja was an assassin or warrior. The closest thing to a modern day ninja is a spy—they were simply gatherers of information, i.e., spies.
TU! Thank you Sensei Rick for the shout out it really is an honor, I will make sure that I'm subscribed to the others you mentioned. Good points about the tactical teams utilizing similar tactics from the Ninja. I remember training with an ex marine drill and hand to hand combat instructor who said the techniques he taught was ninjitsu based. Also the CIA to me is very close to a ninja in occupation.

Weren't Ninja mercenaries? Offering their services to the highest bidder? And I think unlike their present day counterparts they would not know how to handle themselfes on the battlefield. But I agree. There are similarities.
@Micahel213 Yes they say ninjas were mercenaries and yes they have said they offerred their services to the highest bidder. How they would handle themselves on the battlefield today I have no idea. Good points Michael and thanks for the comment and watching.
I think you can safely say that they would not know how to handle themselfes. Ninja were used for political, private and military applications but they weren't military. Our service men and women are. You can easily form a fireteam from a tactical unit and let them operate alongside regular troops. The unique specialization of the Ninja would prevent that. They would simply lack the tactical knowledge.
depends, when they are fighting next to average soldiers, while using saw and being backed up by black hawk choppers with mini guns hell no nothing ninja about that, however when in a behind enemy lines mission using silencers and knifes operating in the dark, very ninja indeed
Very True!!!! Most of instructors come from a tactical background so I totally agree with you and thanks so much for the shout-out my friend !!!!! *Bow*
I totally think that tactical teams are strongly related if not the modern version of ninjas. Both ninjas and tactical teams are required to work and act under certain secrecy, both need to move fast, have tactical training in various types of fighting and the list can go on and on. Thank you for explaining certain things about how tactical teams work and for demonstrating and sharing with us. Hope you will continue to educate us and share with us. God bless, stay safe and have fun :D ! *bow*
@VickThorrable Vick I was indecisive about making this video but have had it in my head for so long. If people like this type of stuff I will continue to make more. I obviously cannot show the techniques of the tactical units that have been shown to me for safety reasons for them. Their tricks of the trade may I say. I may have some of my friends demostrate some tactical stuff with cars (driving) , self defense when being robbed etc in the new year. Thanks again Vick.
Not boring at all, I think this is one of your best videos. I agree tactical teams (ERT) are modern day ninjas, their training is similar as well. They have water, height and pyro training. I'm considering going to that field myself, if I can make the extreme physical test AND all the other ones. Great video Rick!
@Rohan4basu I am glad you liked it Rohan. Good for you for having aspirations to be an Emergency Response Team member. Yes the physical is extremely hard with weighted vests, running etc. I am sure when the time comes you will do very well. Thanks for watchig and commenting brother.
tactical vests armors and gloves, are used by most soldiers of developed countries, face covers and camouflages are also used depending on the mission and environment to be expected, "ninja" also had amour, gloves, face coverings of various sorts, camouflage skills, etc.... sound familiar, then there's the weapons of course
@wepntech yes tactical teams wear body armour , gloves etc just like you wrote. The body armour worn now is made of kevlar etc. The ninja also had gloves, face coverings of varous sorts you are right. Thank you for the points , comment and watching.
Yeah i think you could say that. I jsut finished 2 books about the SAS and its very unbelievable what those guys are able to do.
But what i dont know is, if they really focus that much on martial arts. I mean they first fight with their rifle, then pistol and then knife. Normaly they would never have to get into a fistfight i think. Or am i wrong ?
@ErKa44 you are totally correct they would not use hand to hand first but their weapons first and in the order you said firearm and then knife and then hand to hand. Hand to hand for tactical units is their last option. They may rush someone with ballistic shields that is more or less it. If they are in hand to hand combat that is a bad day for them. However they are trained to deal with it if it happens. Thanks for your comment , points and watching.
I am one who has always tried to adapt my style of ninjutsu to fit into a modern world. I believe the similarities of special forces and Feudal ninjas are many as well. Great vid, discussion and demonstration.
@DanBowenTV Dan you have adapted both you and Jason and people say to Jason when are you going to make ninja videos? When he is in camo and moving about the forest like you and shooting and making camp fires from nothing is that not ninjutsu ? Thanks for the comment bro , your points and watching.
modern day ninjas the tactical are the same im learn little bit of tactical but with air soft actly scale but yet i like old ways as will thumb up on video keep it up rick
@blackswordshinobi I am glad you like the air soft to practice tactical Billy and they are a safe product to use. I too like the old ways but we have to learn the new as well. Thank you for the comment and thumbs up.

@Greatbear1982 You are right Joel the snipers alone have to focus on breathing every breath can mean the difference as to where a shot is placed. Thank you for the points and comment.

@DTGtaihojutsu canadian forces teach that in basic just so many still don't apply the fundamentals
wepntech 2 months ago

@GlockNinja very interesting points thank you for the comment and watching.
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
@GlockNinja actually they as assassins have plenty of offensive weapons and often did explosive attacks along with the typical stuff you see in movies. Also id like to see you take on samurai with lifetime of training when yer only just brought into the martial arts for personal or family reasons. not too mention most "ninja" were lower class poor farmers and such. learn the history and not just the shit you see in movies
wepntech 2 months ago
@wepntech I don't claim to be any expert of Japanese history. But it doesn't take a historian to figure out that if you dress in black and sneak around in the dark, that fighting is something you want to do. Even the Navy Seals last resort is to get involved in a fire fight. I hope that a simple farmer who worked hard his entire life is at least physically fit and nimble enough to do what a "Ninja" does. But u right...I doubt if they want to fight "life long trained" Samurais.
GlockNinja 2 months ago
@GlockNinja im not an expert either but a student of the martial arts and a soldier so i know and understand most of these things from experience rather then rumor or 3rd person intel or wtvr welse u wish to call it
wepntech 1 month ago
@GlockNinja Interesting point, as Sensei has mentioned below. But aren't deception/blockades are the very fundamental of battleplans? I don't people show their chests to the enemy to shoot at them just prove their courage! I believe it takes great amount of courage to do what the Ninjas used to do. So by your rationale, the modern day spies can be labelled as "cowards" too. All that matters in a war is winning I suppose. And Ninjas were real warriors!!
vegdevil 2 months ago
@vegdevil I think we are straying away from the topic. Are Ninja's like Tactical Teams? I said no. A tactical team goes into an area with the intention of taking over an objective. A ninja's objective is not to be detected at all. Break in, sneak, kill person sleeping, and leave. That is not what a tactical team does. Have you ever tried to tip toe around a hard wood floor or marble floor in combat boots and tactical gear? They are two different animals.
GlockNinja 2 months ago
Yes probably you are right but two knives. Who knows. Maybe he likes to cut the ends off of his cigars. Knives have many uses. Common sense you are right however sir i did not see any cars in the courtroom.

@socks1949 who knows maybe the guy is a knife enthusiast LOL.

Harpmaker44 2 months ago
@Harpmaker44 Don for videos I get an idea in my head and try my best to run with it and see how it goes. This is a thought I have had for a while. So I tried to put it into video form today. I have trained with numerous tactical units and also with friends in the Bujinkan and Genbukan and the Duncan group and can see the similarities in how both do business. Some friends in the tactical units train under the Bujinkan and put their skills to real life practice. Thanks for the comment brother.
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
@Harpmaker44 I like you tube and this martial arts group since we can learn from each other it is a live interactive forum where even if people do not post videos they still have a wealth of knowledge and post amazing comments for others to read. I like your quote "From the parent tree has grown many saplings"
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
Was not ninja techniques made for warfare. The special units have just stepped up the methods of the tradition ninja effective strikes. I saw something funny once in a courtroom. The attending police officer was wearing two folding knives in little pockets just below his regular pants pockets. I have never seen that before. The fellow was probably from a special unit. Silent death.
socks1949 2 months ago
@socks1949 Thanks for the comment and points many officers carry knives now my friend to cut seat belts for victims of car accidents stuff like that.
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
@socks1949 maybe ive seen spec ops use them from time to time and in court room may be very effective rather then risking shooting civilians or taseing the wrong person its pretty hard too miss yer target with knives unless u throw em which is just plain stupid unless you are trained to do so and have another set too use or some other backup weapon

Hi Rick
Thank you very much for recommending my channel. Featured you as well.
As for the modern tac teams and the ancient ninjas : that is tricky. In gear, techniques, purpose, prefernece of stealth and so forth I think the modern tac teams are the legit successors of the old ninjas.
But from what I understand one key feature of old ninjas was that they where also proficient in certain breathing exercises and meditative practices. To the best of my knowledge such aspects are not TO BE CONTD
blacksilkblacksilk 2 months ago
CONTD ...
To the best of my knowledge such aspects are not systematically practiced in modern tac teams. On the other hand, if so that might be classified.
In all other respects I am with you on the subject 100 %
take care
martin
blacksilkblacksilk 2 months ago
@blacksilkblacksilk Martin very good points that you brought up I like how you mentioned the meditation and such however I have some friends on tactical teams who have incredible pain tolerance through training and meditation. I think like you that some things are classified.
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
I think the assumption that is most often wrong (thanks hollywood) is that the Ninja was an assassin or warrior. The closest thing to a modern day ninja is a spy—they were simply gatherers of information, i.e., spies.
karausu 2 months ago
@karausu I am glad that you gave us your perspective what ninja are . Thank you for the comment and watching.
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
@karausu mostly yes but not always and by the way spies are usally killed if found out, even in todays world.

Micahel213 2 months ago
@Micahel213 Yes they say ninjas were mercenaries and yes they have said they offerred their services to the highest bidder. How they would handle themselves on the battlefield today I have no idea. Good points Michael and thanks for the comment and watching.
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
@DTGtaihojutsu
Micahel213 2 months ago
depends, when they are fighting next to average soldiers, while using saw and being backed up by black hawk choppers with mini guns hell no nothing ninja about that, however when in a behind enemy lines mission using silencers and knifes operating in the dark, very ninja indeed

@kleinesap wow that was a really cool comment , good points thank you .

DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
Not boring at all, I think this is one of your best videos. I agree tactical teams (ERT) are modern day ninjas, their training is similar as well. They have water, height and pyro training. I'm considering going to that field myself, if I can make the extreme physical test AND all the other ones. Great video Rick!

@Rohan4basu I am glad you liked it Rohan. Good for you for having aspirations to be an Emergency Response Team member. Yes the physical is extremely hard with weighted vests, running etc. I am sure when the time comes you will do very well. Thanks for watchig and commenting brother.

tactical vests armors and gloves, are used by most soldiers of developed countries, face covers and camouflages are also used depending on the mission and environment to be expected, "ninja" also had amour, gloves, face coverings of various sorts, camouflage skills, etc.... sound familiar, then there's the weapons of course
wepntech 2 months ago
@wepntech yes tactical teams wear body armour , gloves etc just like you wrote. The body armour worn now is made of kevlar etc. The ninja also had gloves, face coverings of varous sorts you are right. Thank you for the points , comment and watching.
DTGtaihojutsu 2 months ago
Yeah i think you could say that. I jsut finished 2 books about the SAS and its very unbelievable what those guys are able to do.
But what i dont know is, if they really focus that much on martial arts. I mean they first fight with their rifle, then pistol and then knife. Normaly they would never have to get into a fistfight i think. Or am i wrong ?
ErKa44 2 months ago

DanBowenTV 2 months ago
@DanBowenTV Dan you have adapted both you and Jason and people say to Jason when are you going to make ninja videos? When he is in camo and moving about the forest like you and shooting and making camp fires from nothing is that not ninjutsu ? Thanks for the comment bro , your points and watching.
