This BBC drama could have been phenomenal if they had cast an equally strong Angel. Tess' chemistry is far too great with the Alec in this drama - although it is very enjoyable, you start to feel like her choosing Angel is completely and utterly unrealistic.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that - Gemma and Hans have such great chemistry, it would have been great if Hans could have played Heathcliff to Gemma's Cathy. I hope Gemma and Hans do costar together again at some point.
I agree that Hans makes Alec more likable in this version, and I think he and Gemma Arterton had better chemistry than she had with Eddie Redmayne, who was a poor choice to play Angel, in my opinion. This mini was the only time I wanted Tess to be with Alec, and I think that's a tribute to the actors.
She wasn't that replused by him. The library scence in which Alec let Tess to let some books, you can sense the sexual tension, and the whistle part.. if she was so disgusted by him, why did she wear that dress that he brought to the market fair
". if she was so disgusted by him, why did she wear that dress that he brought to the market fair"
So she wore the dress given to her by him (for what reason?), b/c she wants him sexually or out of family loyalty (because she thinks he's a D'Urberville?) And so she wears the dress, this entitles him the WHAT exactly? Finish your sentence please, b/c its pretty clear what you are writing.
I lovvvee hans matheson and watched the whole series on PBS the other day. he was also great in 'les miserables' many years ago. he plays a villian in 'tess', but has really sensitive sweet eyes and ernest playful nature so his character is paticularly interesting. I love that he does seem to regret raping her, so he's really not a complete sleazy womanizer. i just love all the characters he plays...he's really romantic!!!!!
Oh I totally agree because Hans makes Alec less threateningly charming in the early, pre-seduction scenes. They even make you sympathsize a bit for him by showing how he felt he couldn't live up to his mother's expectations. (Plus Hans is hot and I wish we could've seen more of him in his last scene. More than a peek through a keyhole of Alec clad only in a sheet or purhaps less... ;) )
Hans Matheson makes Alec so likeable... He was horrible in the other versions I saw, and creepy, but in this one he has such charm that it really is very difficult to resist him.I find myself hoping Tess'll end up with him in the end... ;)
Yes I definitely agree with you there! Hans' version of Alec is a very appealing/charming bad boy, unlike the guy in the other version I saw about a decade ago.
SPOILER: If memory serves me, doesn't Tess end up w/Alec for awhile until Angel comes back?
SPOILER: Yes, she does, but only out of interest, she never does really fall in love with him. In fact, I'd say she pretty much hates him throughout the whole thing. She agrees to be his mistress because her family are in need and she can't count on Angel for help anymore, even though he technically is her husband. When Alec offers help in exchange for "company", she has no choice but to accept.
Agreed. In the other versions he's just kind of creepy. But Hans makes him seem a more sympathetic character (and he much more attractive which always helps)... :D
i love the part when he's going to say "its like a kiss" but then stops himself --i know the viewer is not supposed to like alec, but i can't help it at this point in episode
CAN ANYBODY TELL ME why is he still calling caz(cosine) didn't he said that "d'Urbervilles was quiet another name"

I love that really strained way he says "Off you go then" and doesn't move to let her pass. Hans makes an excellent Alec.

But Eddies got such a lovely little face, which is probably why they chose him. He's a good actor, but nothing compared to the original, I agree :)

Wha? He makes her kiss him, to stop him scaring her and he rapes her. Regretting it doesn't make him any more romantic.
