I went to Disneyland when in 1977, when I was 6. My parents tricked me into riding this (I didn't know it was a roller coaster), and it terrified the daylights out of me!
No offense to all the Disneyland lovers but Disney World had the first Space Mountain. It opened in 1975. Of course they planned to put in Disneyland first but they didn't have the technology and money I think. So I guess you could say Disneyland's was the first, but Disney WORLD'S was built first. Yay now I'm just sounding confusing. :P
@Ethanator2010 ...so true.... I am from New Orleans and recall the commercials... coudn't wait to make the 17 hour trip to Orlando and ride Space Mountain @ Disney WORLD
I don't know when Space Mountain officially arrived at Disney World, but it was there in 1980 for sure. Thanks for the memory - I never forgot this commercial.
@roperkids Space Mountain at Disney World opened January 15th, 1975- first indoor dark rollercoaster in the world. There is even a video of the whole opening ceremony with balloons, marching band, dedications, astronauts, and astronaut Mickey of course!
OMG that's awesome! I was just telling my husband about this commercial! I remember watching it at my grandmother's house. My baby brother was sitting in his infant seat and every morning we would watch the Mickey Mouse Club "together". Amazingly I've only ridden Space Mountain once in all the times I've been to Disneyland/World. I rode it in 1996 on my honeymoon at Disney World!
@dizpin haha yep.of course when they say "Space Mountain it can only happen at Disneyland" they mean only the one there. Disney World had Space Mountain first. I love classic Space Mountain visions like this ;)
@steel4eva lucky. I didn't even know there was a Space Mountain in Disneyland until 2009. I only knew about Disney World's Space Mountain, which got a refurb in 2009.
@rocketrodlover I saw your username and couldn't avoid writing this to you... I wish they would open a new, mechanically improved version of rocket rods or peoplemover at Disneyland... It's ironic how Disney World has always had the same peoplemover cars running smoothly, I think they should put some in Disneyland :) gotta love original Tomorrowland stuff ;)
How awesome to see that again. I remember when that ad played here in Southern California. SM was so highly anticipated and when you got to the park and were standing in the queue, I remember you could see into the attraction from the line, watching the trains, glowing in the dark, zipping around. It built up the suspense. Great find!!!
Wow, very similar to the rare commercial for the space mountain in orlando, except I remember at the end of the wdw one, it showed the tops of the roofs of mainstreet at sunset. of course, I was only 3 or 4 when i saw it. Thanks for the post.

@Ethanator2010 it's the disneyland version of space mountain not the disney world one.

@Ethanator2010 Oh and it said that Space Mountain of Disney World came first because, Disneyland has park limitations for Space Mountain.

Hmmm... maybe the launch of Space Mountain was timed to coincide with Star Wars.

its kinda funny i can kinda see stuff in the dark so i can see the track.
so when i went wit my senior class. they couldnt see it. so i would say Left turn.
and b4 they could lean with the turn they would hit the side of the cars.
it was funny for me
