Howto - fix "no sound" issue with recordMyDesktop part1

any idea what you do when you only have PulseAudio server (Local) in your Skype Window ? my mic dosnt work on the test call but my speakers do!

What do you do for the whole pulse audio setup? Skype just sees everything as 'pulse' - entering pulse doesn't work. Entering what I see in volume manager doesn't work either. All I get are scratch noises.

Well this didn't work for me, I only managed to get my microphone working. I also tried changing EVERY setting in alsa mixer to no avail. The only way I can record sound (say this video) with recordmydesktop is to place my microphone next to my subwoofer and tell everybody in the room to shaddap while it's doing a poor job recording. I could have sworn I used to use recordmydesktop without the microphone since I didn't own one but I must be mistaken.

Instead of taking all the trouble to download and then install skype, on Ubuntu you can just apt-get it like I did. If it's not found in the repository you may need to get the medibuntu repo. You should add it anyway because you can get other cool things like googleearth. This fix didn't work for me, none of the options allowed me to hear the microphone or this video playing.

Ok hi. So I want to have recordMyDesktop record the sound off the computer, such as from an FPS game.

I get the devices of "hw:default,0", and "plughw:default,0". Which one would I select to have it record what is happening on my computer?

With "hw:default,0" I get "Broken pipe: Overrun occurred." over and over, and it does not record sound. When I use "plughw:default,0", I get no sound, but I do not get errors either.

Probably would be either camstudio or hypercam but I don't think the recordmydesktop developers made a windows platform edition.

instead of installing skype, you guys can type aplay -l in the terminal to find out what card and device are available. Then, go to gtk-recordmydesktop and enter either 'hw:x,y' or 'plughw:x,y', where x is the card number and y is the device number.

My soundcard is ES1988 Allegro, first time using GTKRecordMyDesktop it's working, and now I can use it anymore, wat do you think?

@arionarian seems like there are some problem with Alsa, try to reinstall it. There's a guide on Ubuntu website on how to do it, you should check that out

Some news programs have sound issues in ubuntu, like tuxguitar, only works the hardy stable version ,the hardy-backport are having sound troubles, What version you are using?

You can also use Audacity to find the drive too!

Like i said in the video its the best way i know how. I've tried other methods to get sound device info but they just don't give you the data like skype does. Skype is free, so yo got nothing to lose. Beside even its "pay for" stuff is stupid cheap. I just dont know anywhere else you can pay 30 bucks to make unlimited calls for an entire year! Trust me skype is just about the best investment I've made.
