The launching system is based on the Russian technology for S-400, and that's why it is also called KM-SAM by many. But the similarity is ended right there because it has different technologies (like ESA and wheeled chassis), complexes and tasks. This is also what my Russian buddy pointed out when it came out to the public.
It is reported that S. Korea paid $2.8 millions to Russia in Sep. 9, 1999 to purchase the technology used in S-400 (more exactly, Vityaz' technology meaning a knight in Russian). ADD of S. Korea started to develop KM-SAM (Cheol Mae 2, Iron Hawk 2) in 2006 with a fund of $0.5 billion and finished its development in 2010. It is currently replacing the old Hawk and Nike surface-to-air missiles.
A surface-to-air missile system similar to Patriot 3 is also under development by ADD.
>> Is it really the same or did russia give south korea Cold Launch tech?
As I wrote previously for others, the similarity between KM-SAM and S-400 is the launching system only. Except for the launching system, Cheol Mae 2 has different technologies, complexes and tasks.
FYI, 9M96E missiles of S-400 can be launched in the launching tubes of Cheol Mae 2.
@ConceptVBS Who said you that? :) All MBT can be driven underwater. :) Some of them are even better, because they don't require the crew to get out after river forcing to get rid of special equipment and tank goes into battle right away.
nakk37, there are several ways to knock down tanks. One of em is projectile exploding above the tank deliverying vertical metal jet blow thru upper armor
plate which is thin. it doesn't need to be a direct hit from front, side or back.
Looks like this video clip shows APS can depend thier tank from attack above. ^^

interesting! that missile is a cold launch system, surprising chinese/russian like instead of following the boxy US design and hot launch setup...

??
projectile is flying a course not hitting the tank, and still APS reacted.
doesnt that mean APS will kill every thing flying around? like rocks or rocket?
nakk37 1 year ago
@nakk37 These are just early stage tests. APS anti-projectile also is not launched from the tank.
