If I recall correctly, There are many scenes that show snow on the ground. Being a native Ohioan, that would mean this movie took place well into December and in rare cases November. By then most teachers know who their students are and don't need to call out names expecting a "here".

This movie was filmed at a high school where I live (Columbus, Ohio). It's, sadly, been torn down. A museum stands on the site where it was located.

This film, as it turns out , is loosely based upon a real-life case where a man in OH sued his school because they gave him passing grades and a diploma despite the fact that he was illiterate.
