im wondering if a version with a tap touchpad would work as well as a trackball. very innovative, tho id stick with my mouse and kb for gaming, it looks fun for casual use and browsing. I use a recliner as my computer chair and this seems like a nice fit. adding wireless makes it a seriously tempting buy for me.
I don't see why a tap touchpad wouldn't work as well as a trackball. Fewer moving parts too. Actually, the AlphaGrip is a perfect fit for sitting in a recliner while working on your computer. Unfortunately, we are probably a couple of years away from a wireless version. Either we must sell enough of our current model to generate the resources we need to produce one, or a wireless adapter for our current model, or we must convince an established company to produce one. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks. It's probably going to take us awhile to generate the resources we need to produce a wireless version or a wireless adapter for the current version, but we are going to try to convince an established company to work with us to bring a wireless iGrip to market.
Many AlphaGrip users split their time between a keyboard and their Grip. Here's an excerpt from a recent blog post:
I used to have a lot of pain in my hand and fingers and tried out various keyboards and devices... After a few weeks of training [on my Grip], I'm now using it for all computer related tasks (mixing, programming, ...) and alternate it with a regular Apple keyboard and mouse. Since they both stress my hand muscles differently, I never put extraneous strain on them anymore...
Well I can't imagine replacing my keyboard with this (I'm typing like 80+ words/min and I'm very comfortable with it). However, I'll love to get one just for the pleasure of using my computer in my bed.. :). Nice gadget by the way!
We have a few returns that we've tested, repackaged, and are selling for $79, including shipping. Send an email to support at alphagrip if you're interested.
You would probably memorize where all the letters are on the back keys in a couple of hours. Learning to type fast, however, takes about an hour a day for 2 months. This is less time than it takes to learn to touch type on a keyboard, but it's still an effort. Fortunately, many people have found that using an AlphaGrip is so comfortable, it's worth the effort of learning to use it.
It's a keyboard and trackball in the form of a game controller. People have achieved typing speeds of 70 wpm on it, but it's "claim to fame" is that it enables very comfortable computing from any location in any body position at a reasonable, if not blazing, rate of speed.
We'd like to produce a wireless adapter for our current product, the AG-5, or a wireless AG-6, but we're probably 1-2 years away from being able to produce either of those cordless solutions.
The trackball is slow out of the box, but it can be sped up by adjusting the computer's mouse settings or by downloading a free "Mousebooster" program on our website. I expect the AG-6 will have an optical trackball or some other high-precision pointing device. But again, that product is well down the road and is contingent upon the success of the AG-5.
The manufacturer has since modified the firmware to incorporate a non-linear gain algorithm that enables a pointer to be accurate when the trackball is moved slowly, but fast (up to 1,000 DPI) when moved quickly.
Oh, yes, well, it is intended to demonstrate that one can use a computer more comfortably and productively with an AlphaGrip than with a keyboard and mouse while lying in bed.
Well, it's all relative. 50 wpm is fast for a handheld device and if you find that using an AlphaGrip is significantly more comfortable than using a keyboard and mouse, 50 wpm may be fast enough, even if not as your primary keyboard. FYI, it looks like some users can achieve typing speeds well in excess of 50 wpm.
Well, it is touch typing, so it's not easy. But it is easier to learn to touch type on an AlphaGrip (takes about a month) than a keyboard (takes about 6 months) because you don't have to learn how to move your fingers up, down and across 5 rows of keys. When you grasp an AlphaGrip your fingers naturally fall on or near all the keys you need for typing.
I have this thing and it's great! I'm learning to type with it and I'm at 110 cpm at the moment. It is very comfornable!
