  • I LOVE THIS SONG BUT MORE I LOVE IT SONG BY JOHN McDERMOTT

  • I'm a big tough man, but this song makes me cry. My dear late father was a great man, sorely missed, much appreciated in memories and wisdom he taught us.

  • This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. We played this at my dads funeral. Not just the words but the feelings behind them. Pure love! Thank you John!

  • What a great version of this song..... I said the words to this song at my fathers funeral nearly 10 years ago now....... one of the hardest things i've ever done. Still brings a tear to my eye every time i here it. Lovely....... simply lovely.

  • Happy Father's Day to everyone!

  • This song is very touching,

......he was born than just a father, a teacher, my best friend.....

Hope, not only John McDermott and his father but also

all members of our families have such a nice feeling each other.

  • I truly love everything sung by John McDermott, and this song is very special :0)

  • I really like the song :)

  • This always brings tears to my eyes remembering "My Old Man" who taught me many things about life.

  • this song was played at my poppys (grandpas) funeral :(

    .. RIP<3

  • If you look closely, you can see the track of a tear glistening on his right cheek. I don't know how anybody can retain enough control to sing a song like this while visibly moved to tears. This song is by any definition a masterpiece.

  • I've always liked this song. It helps me appreciate my dad who I miss very much!

  • I have always loved this song and John singing it. As a singer, I don't know that I could sing that for my father without completely losing it. I break down even thinking of the day when I might lose him. Life is so short. Be intentional to tell those whom you love, that, in fact, you love them. I tell my parents as often as I can. The LORD bless you all.

  • lost my father to cancer its been seven years of thinking what i would have said or done different this song was played at his funeralits perfect

    miss u dad

  • What a beautiful tribute to his Father. I too, miss my Dad so very much. There is never a day goes by that I don't notice a bird singing or a leaf changing, a river flowing or any such beauty, that I don't think of him. This has touched my heart and I will be so happy to share with my brothers and sisters so they too will "remember".

  • He really puts his heart into his singing.

  • Wow...so moving.

  • Wow...

  • John, an absolutely incredible song. I can't imagine a more fitting song to play at my Father's memorial service on Saturday, Sptember 3, 2010 in Mississauga. IMy Father is from Liverpool and taught me so much about life. Thank you for this beautiful rendition.

Thank you from my sisters, Mum and I.

    Respectfully, Sean Ratcliffe

  • John, if you read this, Thank you for recording such an incredible song! I had never heard it and came across your rendition by chance. Today is Thursday Sept. 1, 2010. My father past on Tuesday evening. This song is perfect! I wrote a poem 2 or 3 years ago, very similar about my Father and it is a fitting song to play on Saturday at his memorial.

Thank you for your beautiful voice. With respect in Toronto, Sean Ratcliffe

  • Beautiful song! Thank you for sharing!

  • Just discovered this song. Incredible voice, so much emotion.

Will share with you this, my Old Man did not care much for Mother or the 3 children born to their marriage.

However the one thing that I will take to my grave is the inspiration from a non -existant relationship between a Father and Son.

That is on how to be a father to my children and one can only hope my children will come across this song and share the emotion that John Mcdermott displays for a "Father" loved.

  • A very handsome man with a great voice

  • I always think of my dad when I hear this song...The first time I heard it was at an outdoor concert at the Highland of Durhams Games John played for...WOW, what a concert!!! Really felt like it was a private affair and he was singiong for my family...Thanks for that John and keep singing please..

  • I saw john live once with the irish tenors and he did this and I don,t think there was a dry eye in the house, and when he finished there were tears in his eyes, and I thought oh john don,t cry, if you cry I,ll cry, a beautiful song, and thanks for posting

  • I first heard this song not long after my own father passed away (17years ago) and I was moved to tears and that song always has the same effect. John McDermott's song is beautiful and I agree a wonderful moving tribute to all fathers who are no longer with us......I miss my Dad very much ....Thank you John McDermott for this beautiful song......

  • I saw this on PBS about five years ago and was moved to tears. I just found it again on YouTube (thank you!) and it had the same effect. John McDermott's performance is a beautiful and moving tribute to all fathers who are no longer with us to comfort us and to share in our joys and sorrows.

This coming Sunday, Easter, marks the 30th anniversary of my own father's passing. And I miss him so much. But we will be together again one day.

Thank you, John McDermott, for this gift.

  • My 6 brother and sisters just buried our 91 year old 4th generation Irish father. He loved Ireland. He was able to go there 5 times. We all went there this past summer but da was not able to go, but we all shared our experience. Da was a product of a poor childhood and the depression .Also a time when a handshake was a contract as wellasyour word a contract.Nothing like today. That too has died with him.And willwith us as well.

I will miss you OLD MAN and so will the world.

  • :'(

  • Wow, lost my Dad at Christmas. This is sad, but uplifting. Maybe even theraputic. VERY nice!

  • omg how i feel this my dad was my hero and i miss him evertday i am blessed wityh his memory this song just makes me feel that

  • I love this song. We played it at my grandfather's funeral. It gets me crying everytime.

  • This song made me cry when i first heard it a few years back... and i havt cryed in years before, or after. Its a powerful song, especially this version. The expressions portrayed are prominent and touching.

  • Thank you for speaking for me.

  • Only the Irish could make such a beautiful song.

  • phil coulter ;)

  • John McDermott must feel rightly proud of this video. It's a powerful rendition of a very emotive song. Such passion is rare, but the tonal quality of JM's voice and the true sentiment displayed here makes this song a classic and beautiful ballad of the first order. So glad I got the chance to hear him sing this on youtube. Just wonderful.

Well, from an Irish, Scottish, Canadian, what else can you expect? :)

    Thanks for posting.

  • @GeoStratocaster I do believe he sang this song shortly after his own father passed away. It truly is his best.

  • What a wonderful performance!

    Lil' Robert

    (Gospel Countertenor)

  • This song tells the truth about how it should be between a father and a son. Thank You!

  • You were so blessed John to have such a wonderful father and he must have been a very proud father too.

Thanks for sharing this video its the most moving performance I,ve ever seen.

  • This song is very beautiful. Makes me think of my old man who passed away.

  • Thank you for your nice comments about this post. I am most pleased you liked it. -Mac

  • This was filmed shortly after John's father passed away. In the beginning you can see him look over to his left and smile. His sister was in the audience that night, which made the night and the song that much more emotional. One of John's best songs...

  • Agreed. And I made reference to that in my notes to the right. Unquestionably his BEST performance (live OR studio) of ANY of his songs. Thanks for your comments! -Mac

  • @macrosent It Disnae matter who yi lost, it means just as much, I lost my Dear Wife 6 Months ago and the song means just as Much to me, and it still Hurts so Much..Jock

  • @Chreepo

How the heck did he get through that without bawling? I can't even read the lyrics without pouring.

    Awesome song.

  • This is beautiful!

  • Thanks for your comment! -Mac
