  • Aside from Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett, is there a better writer than Victoria Wood today?

  • @Dianaemanuel No!!! :)

  • It's wonderful, but clearly owes a lot to Alan Bennett.

  • What are 'gypsy creams'?

  • @FeelGood30 Biscuits

  • Biscuits

  • English people have a very different sense of humour than Americans. I love old English pbs sitcoms.

  • i wish she was my mum

  • very good comedy

  • Patricia,Susie,Duncan,Celia et al must've kissed VW's feet to be offered such wonderful characters.Yes,they're all fine actors in their own right, but the absolute joy of being able to appear in Britain's finest comedienne's tv shows would have to have been just amazing! Susie with her continuity announcer,Patricia as Kitty,Celia & Duncan in Acorn Antiques, simply superb.Oh,& naturally,JW,let's not forget her input, lol.A Damehood for VW,please!

  • concussed by an electric potato peeler, oh my gosh that is hysterical. Patricia you rock, love from the USA

  • Dame Patricia Routledge anyone?

  • Way before "Keeping up apperances" she was a comedian star.

  • oh i adore Kitty, wonderful.

  • great actress ,,,,,,,

  • i've been looking for that gag from 2:16 for ages!!

  • @neilrwilkinson One of the best one-liners ever!

  • Victoria Wood when she was briliant. Great line up she had back then. Shame she forgot these people during her recent Xmas special in 09

  • Love this, always have, but could never get into KUA.

  • Patricia Routledge is a very good actress

  • Brilliantly funny... Patricia Routledge is fantastic... She is awesome in anything she acts in... Fabulous and so witty too... Victoria Wood's writing screams class and talent... And she picked the right lady tp perform it... Bravo... bravo ;0)x

  • thought what would the queen mum do!!! so i said we shall have fog by tea time..

  • the resemblance to young molly sugden is almost uncanny...

  • I just LOVE Patricia Routledge! she is brilliant!!

  • National Treasure is right.

  • Kitty ftw :D

  • So very Victoria Wood wording, but by god this is wonderfull, well written and damn funny!

  • I love Kitty. She says it like it is. "I've had my TV mended. Well, I say mended. A shifty looking youth in plimsolls came and waggled my aerial and wolfed my Gipsy creams but that's the comprehensive system for you!"

BTW where can I get a gravy boat in the shape of Tony Hancock? I'll be thrilled! Classic British comedy! And I remember Gipsy creams. Can you still get them or they considered non-PC?

  • ...I love this woman! (lol)

  • She's so reading this! Still good though

  • Nah. She's just a brilliant performer, completely committed to professional perfection.

She'll have learned this backwards; rehearsed and perfected every squint.

  • slingbacks... priceless. so funny

  • genius!

  • = National Treasure

  • First time seeing this.. thanks.. :)

  • This is obviously several years before Miss Routledge portrayed "Hyacinth Bucket" on "Keeping Up Appearances."

And I've read she had also acted on Broadway, won or was nominated for a Tony Award in some production. So was this "Kitty" the first TV acclaim for Miss Routledge? What year was this produced?

  • VERY cool stuff

  • There will never be anyone like Kitty ever again. She is one person I would have love to meet in life. I have been hooked on UK comedies for years. Once I saw Onslo wearing a Green Bay Packer's (my home team) jersey on "Keeping Up Appearences". What a hoot!

  • cool my surname is routledge i dont know where she is in my family but shes really funny!

  • hehe grumbling ovary XD

  • "Kitty" they say to me "how do you keep so young? Do you perhaps inject yourself with a solution deriving from the placenta of the female gibbon?"

    lmao

  • rofl rofl rofl - a true legend

  • I just love her style!

  • I.

    Love.

    Her.

  • Incredible writing and delivery - I love this stuff because its just so clever and very very funny!

  • she's funny lol

  • She is hilarious! Someone just told me about her and I could not stop laughing. Love the part about dancing and the leotard....so funny! Thanks for posting this.

  • I don't get that part... lol... he would have painted us purple??

  • she remainds me off ma self

  • Gawd she reminds me of my nan so much :P

  • this is brilliant. Another good example of tasty British humour.

  • This woman is so wonderful. I just adore Patricia Routledge...she is amazing! : )

I still thank my parents for telling me about Keeping Up Appearances....

  • Why hasn't Patricia Routledge been made a Dame Commander by now? She certainly deserves it!!

  • Comment removed

  • What?!! I hadn't read or heard that. Last time I looked at Wikipedia she was still living and was about 80, maybe not as active as she was a few years ago.

  • Comment removed

  • She's not dead. Look her up.

  • o my bad! someone a while back told me she was dead.

  • She is alive and well :-)

  • she is dame commander of the british empire

  • She's alive and kicking. Wonderful woman....God bless her :-)

  • I ADORE Patricia Routledge. She is FANTASTIC.

  • I think alan bennett wrote her material?

  • I think my mother wrote her material! They're ompletely identical in every way except Kitty is from North rather than South Cheshire...

  • @WELLBRAN He wrote some of her material but "Kitty" is written by Victoria Wood. Just wonderful!

  • Brilliant. The forerunner to Mrs Bucket only much funnier IMHO

  • I LOVE her. SO funny...and she reminds me of a friends mother, here in the states.

    Xenia Ohio

  • that's rather frightening lol

    love this woman, though

  • No matter how many times I see this sketch, I still laugh each time.

'I've only had the need of hospitilization once, when I was concussed by an electric potato peeler at the ideal home exhibition'

    Haha, absolute classic.

  • "do you perhaps inject yourself with a solution deriving from the placenta of the female gibbon?" lmao

  • but thats the comprehensive system for you lol lol

  • She is so funny.

  • She is!!!

  • mashed swede.

  • Nuclear war, pegbags.

How often do you see those two aspects of life together?

  • And I shall wait to see myself before i do any more. Edward Lear couldn't make a more nonsensical sentence.

  • Isn't that the lady from "keeping up appearances" ?

  • Yes, it's Patricia Routledge. "Keeping Up Appearances" ran from 1990 to 1995, but has been repeated a lot, so that's why it probably seems so recent.

  • yes, Patricia Routledge check the opening credits on the show

  • "I'm poked in the street by complete acquaintances"... Priceless!

  • What year was this gem done?

  • Always loved the 'Kitty' monologues - excellent stuff!

    :)

    Neil.

  • Does anyone have the other Kitty sketches? She gets progressively drunker as they go on, if I remember rightly.

  • She does get progressively drunk in one when it's xmas time or she's off to some do...

  • yeah, I remember one where she's drinking sherry. lots of sherry, lol.

  • Yes - that seems to be the one Kitty monologue that is missing from here, so I hope that someone will post it some day. She drinks so much sherry that eventually, she just keeps the bottle !!! It is absolutely hilarious.

We have seen Patricia Routledge on stage in London in "Talking Heads" doing two monologues, and she is brilliant - an absolutely superb actress and a master of comedy timing.

  • really really funny :). that was written by victoria wood wasn't it?

  • Indeed, though that is only half the brilliance... delivery is everything and Ms. Routledge is an absolute master at delivery!

  • she speaks about sex with a swede, up the rear would release the gas she refers to, stuck and ... well, if u know then u know.

  • swede is a large yellow fleshed turnip. nice mashed with carrot, although it would make a good draft excluder.

  • Mashed what? Swede?

  • If you are from America, you call it a rutabaga.

  • Pure genius.

  • Wraning: Do not attempt to drink tea or anything else while watching this. The combination of fluids and laughter may cause choking.

    (as I have learned)

  • Absolute genius.

  • Thanks for posting this Kitty sketch. Patricia Routledge is an amazing character actress. My favorite, though, will forever and always be Hyacinth from "Keeping Up Appearances" -- absolutely brilliant comedic acting in what is easily one of the funniest sitcoms of all time!

  • One of our most versatile actresses. Brilliant in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and Keeping Up Appearances, but she has done so much more. I wish we could see her on television more often.

  • I wish for the same too, although I have no television but I do watch rental dvds and am currently on Hetty Wainthropp after watching the entire Keeping Up Appearances. Love her!

  • Love her!! My fimaily still refers to her as "The Bucket Woman".

  • That's Bouquet...

  • Hahahahaha!!! Oh yes Bouquet! But rememeber the Vicar's wife was always calling her "The Bucket Women"? That always made me laugh! Heehee.

  • Was this done in the early 80s, she looks a LOT younger than her Hyacinth character...

  • I think this is from 1985.

  • rolf good imitation

    ozone---peace

  • Can someone re-up the other Kitty that disappeared? The one where she's downing the sherry?

  • Fantastic! Still so funny and the delivery is faultless. A classic.

  • mashed swede-yummy!-love her!

  • Patricia Routledge is beyond funny. A great actress. However, I have no idea what show "Kitty" is from.

  • The sketch is from Victoria Wood's show on the BBC.

  • Dame Edna and Kitty must get together and have tea. It would be phenomenal!!!!

  • shes amazing actress comedian hiliarious i luv her in keeping up apperances

  • ahaha shes brilliant! and she looks alot thinner than she is in keeping up appearances! :S

  • Oh my...now THAT was confusing! haha...jk...

  • Absolute gem - this woman is THE BEST at doing monologues - her best performance was "A Lady Of Letters" - long live Ms. Routledge - and of course, Mr. Alan Bennett!

    :)

    Neil.

  • Absolutely brilliant - more of Kitty, please, if available - thanks.

  • Thank you!

  • Totally OUTSTANDING in everything she does!

  • i love her too

  • This lady is awsome, I loved her in Keeping up appearances in the role of Hyacinth. So funny!

  • "I've become something of a celeb since I walked the Peak Districts in slingbacks in an attempt to publicise mental health." - fantastic line!!!

  • "i feel that if god had wanted us to wear leotards he would have made us purple" immortal words from the brilliat patricia routledge. thanks for the clip and keep them coming :)

  • "Poked In the side bu Complete Aquatances"(Mispelt of course). Vicky writes really well, but Routledge is 2/3rds of these sketches.

  • lmao..She's Gr8 !

    Xx S t e v e xX

  • awsome text. why does no one write this stuff anymore.

  • I love Patricia Routledge!

  • "...I'm not a fan of the modern railway

    system..." ;)

    Thanks for posting that. :)
