  • In the middle east, we put tahin (tahini) and we sometimes use basil olive oil instead of ACTUALLY putting basil in it.

  • Thanks! I tried this, because i had no tahini on hand. Turned out very delicious!

  • So sad that Americans think they know good basil, the only good basil is in Italia!

  • @ClemtoonLovezAll fresh grown basil is fresh grown basil

  • I shall call this Yummus!

  • Let it marinade overnight in the refrigerator and then see the magic

  • chef, isnt Tahina(seseme sees paste) needed

  • Takes 20 seconds to blanch the basils

Claims this recipe only took 2 seconds.

    I love Chef John.

  • Disappointed in Chef John... calling it hummus when there's no tahini is a joke...

  • do you need to soak the beans the day before?

  • awesome video, AWESOME MORE MORE MORE!

  • you dont use tahini in yours?

  • "i don't want the glory , i'd rather have the money" - i love Chef John.

  • olive oil will not get bitter in blender (cheap stuff diluted with say cotton oil will.In it will get bitter )But if there a acid in it it will emulsify and thicken.

  • you need chick peas to make hummus!

  • NEVER watch these videos on an empty stomach. you're only torturing yourself :-||

  • it's really great to see vegan recipes -- i wish there were more vegan recipes =)

  • looks good, but for me hummus has to have tahini in it!

  • Yay! A different way to use up my basil so I can give my plant a trim :) mmmmm hummus *drool* I admit I'll probably throw in some more add-ins but I love that it's a basic recipe so it's totally flexible.

  • Epic Meal Time is for entertainment. This is the real deal!

  • Nive recipe. Going to try it out this week when I head back to the city for work. I was wondering, could you do this with some chopped spinach as well?

  • Your videos always make me smile :)

  • I think the bitterness from blending the olive oil might be from the heat of the blender. Just a theory.

  • if you like anything on a chip hahahah idk why but the way he said that made me laugh

  • flat bread is sooo good to go with this

  • check out my recipies of food.com.my memeber name is abe ray you can look up my recipies by my member name.

  • can you use soy sauce instead of salt?

  • I hear adding yogurt or sour cream adds good consistency to hummus....I also know that in regular hummus, mint (just a few leaves) is the magic ingredient.

  • whats this tune? its awesome . X_X i have been finding it for darn long !

  • Comment removed

  • i just finished making Green Hummus , and i love it, Awesome thank you Chef John

  • Looks good definitely going to have to try it out.

  • So healthy!

  • did you have to cook the beans and/or soak them before using? if so, please explain. thanks!

  • I was skeptical at first but when he said, "if you love anything on a chip, you will love this". SOLD

  • wheres the sesame seed paste? dont they put that in hummus?

  • huuummuuuuusssss oooOOOOOOOOOoooooooOOOOOOOooo

  • no tahini ?

  • guacamole video?

  • tasty bean poop

  • CJ (and I use that nickname in the most endearing way) now that winter is coming, could you please show us how to grow our spices (basil, thyme, parsley, etc.) indoors? Mine always seem to die. I'd really appreciate it.

  • @PlankayKhan That is why America is going to the dogs.

  • Chow recommends using dried garbanzos to make an even smoother and creamier hummus. :)

  • Can you do this in a food processor?

  • Crisp.

  • it was only 17 seconds not 20, how could you ruin your basil?!?

  • Dear Chef John, would you do a regular hummus just the same but without the basil?

  • mexican food pleaseee :)

  • Where is the Tahini????

  • @IAlanakiI first this is not a regular hummus second he's replacing it with beans.

  • I can't believe he is less popular than epic meal time 0.o.... the things people value

  • @YellowLittleDucky they are a comedic channel, foodwishes is an actual cooking channel.

  • @nwLohmann That's kind of what makes it sadder.

  • @YellowLittleDucky I blame all the bros out there :-/

  • @YellowLittleDucky who's epic meal time? :/

  • @YellowLittleDucky well epic meal time is a comic show rather than a cooking show :)

  • @YellowLittleDucky this is a real cooking show designed to instruct and entertain. EpicMealTime is a joke cooking show not designed to instruct but purely entertain. Both are good at what thy do but it's easy to see and understand why one would be more popular than the other.

  • @RealJollyRoger i think @YellowLittleDucky knows that; hence the post-script, "the things people value". in other words, many people don't value instruction as much as pure entertainment.

  • @hagios9 sure, but i think that's misplacing blame. Everyone has things they're interested in, and will probably look for instruction on their own hobbies. I'm interested in cooking, but not everyone is. However, people don't watch Epic Meal Time for the cooking tips and recipes, they watch it for the ludacris food and ridiculously overblown attitude. on the same token, i'm not interested in raising spiders, so I wouldn't join my friend when--

  • @hagios9 damn you youtube: Continued --he watches the bug guy's videos. However, we can both sit down and watch a video of a scorpion fighting a tarantula. Entertainment is much more universal, while hobbies are niche per say.

  • @RealJollyRoger right on.

  • @RealJollyRoger Don't you find that, while epic meal time has shock value, it lacks sound taste and wit? I doubt it will be sustainable as Foodwishes though, they mostly just pile food on top of each other and put absurd amounts of alcohol in the food.

  • @YellowLittleDucky I don't think it's fair to judge the intrinsic value of either show as better or worse based on something that boils down to personal taste.

I enjoy both shows for different reasons.

  • @YellowLittleDucky exactly, I've watched it and it nauseates me.

  • @RealJollyRoger I love both channels and I think it is all about the interest you have for cooking. I started watching EpicMealTIme, then Regular Ordinary Swedish Meal Time then I have discovered this channel. One thing may lead to another if you are curious enough I Think.

  • @kzrrz yes of course. Though i did not find foodwishes through epic meal time personally.

  • @YellowLittleDucky Its alright, he's gonna last longer than those guys

  • @YellowLittleDucky BACON AND JACK DANIELS SAAUUCE!

  • @YellowLittleDucky

    I KNOOOOOOW

  • @YellowLittleDucky epic meal time is a freak show, literally, of course its gonna be more popular.

notice all the popular youtube stars, majority of them are popular for being weird, obnoxious, oblivious, and annoying, pretty much sums it up on how to make money on youtube.

  • @houchi69 ...I think that kind of a snobby statement really, im a fan of both. Also please don't generalize the community like that

  • @whosaiducaneatmario i did say "majority" did i not?

if you havent seen the list of channels with the top views and subscribers, you should. and watch a few of the top channel's videos. you will know what i meant.

  • @YellowLittleDucky AMEN to that, even the word EPIC doesn't belong in the Kitchen, let alone Jack Daniels.

  • you forgot the tahini, most important ingrediense

  • I was thinking that the blender would be the perfect time for the old "tapa tapa". Boy, was I wrong!

  • trader joes has this too... but id rather try this

  • No tahini? Who cares it still looks great!

  • It's not pronounced Ba-sal, it's Baz-el

  • @CelticReject I agree but apparently American's can't tell between the name Basil and the plant Basil so they have to say it like that... same with Herb, (h)erb's grow in the garden, but Herb is a guy.... utter brain melting confusion to yr average American...gawd love em!

  • @donglabong haha I know. I was expecting to get a few negative comments. Yours made me laugh!

  • I laughed when you said "if youre and idiot like me LOL!

  • Thanks Chef!!

  • TAAAAHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINEEEEEEEEEE!

  • I am very sad...

Just finished my meal and saw this video. I'd have much rather have had this; now I have to wait until tomorrow ;(

  • @cjlee28 You can buy pre-soaked chickpeas to save the hassle. Otherwise you're looking at soaking them overnight in water with a small amount of baking powder, then boilling them for an hour before use! I worked in a restaurant where we made fresh hummous daily, and can honestly say from experience to buy ready-to-use beans as you can barely taste the difference!!!

  • no tahin?

  • People who know their seasoning can always do something else if they don't want too much salt :) I find paprika, chili and sometimes curry to be great replacements.

  • John, next time you make this, try both??, make one with the oil inther from the beginning.. and one like the video..and taste if theres a difference?

  • gonna make some hummus tommorrow after schoool! WOOOOOOOOOOOOH

  • The greatest internet chef ever.. Chef *o**

  • This looks so yummy!

  • I've never liked hummus just because it always tasted and felt like i was eating large grains of sand. This however looks like something I might want to try. The optional rubber ingredient sounds like an interesting addition as well.

  • Suggestion dill works well. Or anything because you're the master of your hummus. Might I also suggest a black bean hummus, so nutritious.

  • I love Hummus! Thanks for the recipe.

  • Looks awesome. Love hummus. So I guess I'm never putting my blender away.

  • great!

  • cumin? or seasame paste? just suggestions

  • Chef John should really replace Rachael Ray on Food Network.

  • @ClassicHolic food network should just consist on chef john and alton brown.

  • i'm sure it tastes great, but i doubt you can call it Hummus.

you might want to call it hummus-like, or "hummus",

just as you will not call a vegetarian dish made to look like a hamburger

by the original name Hamburger, you'd rather call it Hamburger-like,

    or lentil-mushrum-nuts-"hamburger".

    :-)

  • "I dont need any glory, I rather have the money" AHAHAHAHAHAHAH so true Chef John xDDDD

  • A real idiot would have eaten the rubber infused hummus. I would know--I'm that idiot.

  • I think I'm going to try this during the Holidays for appetizer time.

  • I love your channel and all your recipes, but they are called chick peas!

  • Comment removed

  • @Dynamite229915 A schooner IS a sailboat. ;) (Chickpeas and garbanzo beans are two names for the same thing.)

  • mmmmm rubber infused hummus

  • "You're the boss of your hummus" Hahaha love it !!

  • Mmmm, basil in the hummus! Thanks Chef John!

By the way, the proper Middle Eastern pronunciation is Hoo'-moose, with a hard H at the beginning (like you are clearing your throat) and the two U's pronounced with an "oo" sound.

However, your show, your pronunciation! Love you!

  • Where is the tahini?

  • @zwithgol I was wondering the exact same thing

  • @zwithgol I never use tahini, I find it adds a stale taste to the homous. Tastes way better without it in my opinion and this dip seems so fresh, I can see why one would leave the tahini out.

  • @6151RichmondStreet I think it needs tahini to give it that nice creamy texture and slightly sweet taste.

  • Comment removed

  • @riceball406 I know what tahini is. Why are you telling me this? I don't mean to seem rude if it appears that way.

  • @zwithgol hummus can be made with tahina or without tahina......as they say here in the middle east, its hummus or hummus tahina

  • @alibangbang71 We call it tahini here, and I don't put it in what I call "Italian" hummus like Chef John made. And if you're ever out of tahini, you can always use some sesame oil instead. I also put in a little peanut butter with the sesame oil. It's a little different, but not unpleasant. You still get your hummus fix, and that's the important part!

  • @MrHomeChef that's a great idea....hummus with peanut butter....i will try it soon

  • @zwithgol -> google

  • I've actually recently been putting pesto with hummus in my lunches! This is a great idea to combine the two. What a coincidence, but yum!

  • Your voice and the character your voice carries is so soothing!!

  • Garbanzo = Chickpea

  • Your vidoes are like therapeutic to me

  • yummiiiiii i love hummus , but this looks great, thank you Chef John

  • anyone who dislikes this video has no soul!

  • Food processor...

  • Hummus Boss!

  • Now we just need a basil infused pita bread recipe :P

  • I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but here's some hummus for those mini-toast :B

  • how long will it last in the fridge until it gets bad?

  • Love love love how easy u make everything look

  • no chickpeas?

  • @kiravintio oh nvm, garbanzo beans is another name for chickpeas haha XD
