Best reading of the sonnet's I've ever heard. As with Hamlet, David Tennant gives life to the words that 21st century ears can understand 400 years after they were written. Good stuff.
Ahh, I remember these sonnets from my Intro to the English Major class in college. Too bad I didn't have this to listen to then. I mean they weren't bad at the time at all, but this would have made them a billion times better.
I saw DT in Much Ado on stage this summer. I knew he would be good but......! Words fail me. And not just because I am a big fangirl! He was born to do Shakespeare. Utterly, utterly brilliant. When he said, 'I do love nothing in the world so well as you. Is not that strange?' I just about fell off my seat. Catherine Tate was pretty good, too. Best money I ever spent!
Could someone tell me which all sonnets are read here please. I'm not a lit student and much as i love listening to them i cant recognize them... Thanks
Congratulations on the birth of this fair child of yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And just before before Davids 40 birthday. Good timing, that. I can't see any deep trenches in his beauties field though.
Love has naught to do with Valentine's day. It must be made like bread, watered like flowers It's learning to respect, honour and obey, and chooses believers, but not doubters The Greeks' split love in five – homely xenia is one, lusty eros is another; familial storge and affable philia – heavenly agape being t'other Love is what happens when your happiness rests on how your dearest feels every day. Once found, hold on to it but I digress To my wife, dog, family and friends I'd say
so would rather go see a Shakespearean play then go to a rock concert (well maybe for wizard rock) I(love his voice !!! Thank you sooo much for posting :) !
In fact for my 18th birthday i got to see Phantom of the Opera at the fox theater and it was amazing!!!!!
I love david and shakespeare this year in english we are reading Hamlet (my favorite play) and my english teacher HATES SHAKESPEARE!!! I thought that was a requirement for english teachers! She can't even read The Tell Tale Heart (Im a big Po fan 2) with any feeling!
SO GLAD he's using his real accent...I believe in people using their real accents for Shakespeare, unless it's in a specific setting that requires another. Also wonderful to hear the sonnets read, by a fine actor. Thanks for posting!
@tabbykatification if it's something you love and care about than don't keep it to yourself! I'd check to see if your school has a literature club of some sort or maybe a speech team? It's perfectly fine to love it, but it's healthier to express that love with other people :) than you'll see just how much fun being yourself is.
OK, so I'm twelve and I like Shakespeare. I just love his work and think he is a literary GENIUS! I would much rather see Hamlet than go to a nightclub or whatever. I have about seven if his sonnets memorized, and soon will have memorized the others. Is this "normal"? I normally don't care if I am normal or not, but this is one thing I have always cared about. Is it OK to like Shakespeare more than real life? Also, did the Globe Theatre really have 14 sides?
Hey Tabby, you sound like a smart kid who identifies with something timeless and beautiful, something that kids in your age group just don't get. But remember the purpose of playing is "to hold, as twere, the mirror up to nature." You can't lose your connection to real life because that is what Shakespeare's work illuminates and it's where he drew inspiration. A true player should love and thirst for life, so go out there and LIVE IT! It's gonna be ok.
@petersoup Thanks!!! I totally understand everything you said. I think I worded my comment quite badly, but never mind! Anyway, thanks for everything and I'm so glad you replied to my comment. We are learning about Shakespeare at school, and most the people in the class are doing really badly at it, so it shows that my knowledge of practically EVERYTHING to do with Shakespeare has come in handy.
I'm almost 20, and not really as well read as I should be, but I'm actually picking up my Shakespeare books again... And Shakespeare plays, especially, are difficult enough to a native English speaker (or so I assume), but English is my second language, so it's tough :P And yeah, I, too, would rather watch David Tennant do Shakespeare than go to a party, or, indeed a rock concert - and that's big, coming from me; I'm a huge rock junkie! I guess I'm just a bigger Tennant fan than a music fan :P
Sekirk-there is NOTHING wrong with you..I'm in the same age group where people want to party, but like you I would much rather be listening..or watching..David Tennant :D
Here's the sonnets' numbers. In case anyone wants them. Sonenet II, VII, IX, XVII, XVIII, XI, XIV, and CLIV. I'm pretty sure they're in that order too.
most people my age want to got to parties or to rock conserts but me? no i want to see David Tennant do Shakspeare! there is something wrong with me...
