Those battleships were old junks destined to be scraped and replaced in not so far future. Why nobody informed that those ships were obsolete, some of they remembered first world war and others 20th. At that moment the "Navy" was replacing them by North Caroline-class(2), South Dakota-class(4), and Iowa-class(4). Only due to landing operations needed more cover they recovered junks from Pearl Harbor. They had to for clean port a navy needs.

@ZajacPoziomkaWita For a start, most battleships at the beginning of the were left over from the WWI period's super dreadnought, few interwar era ships such as Nelson and Nagato class, following a protracted cooling down period enforced by the Washington Naval treaty in the 20's, also contributing to the vintage was the great depression in the 30's, only when war seem imminent new battle ships were rush into production and modernization began.

But, some time prior, we cut off their oil and other resources. FDR forced them into a now or never strategy.

Yes we cut off their resources (for the most part), because of what they were doing in China. Why is it the fault of FDR that they refused to behave like a real country and military. The US was not the only one with sanctions (embargoes) against the Japanese and not the only one attacked. So by your logic, what was wrong with the counter-parts to FDR. Not defending FDR by any means, but let's get history correct and complete please.

@edydon LOL Learn history! America was transportorting oil to Japan to kill millions of Chinese military and civillians. Japan's acts of actroicity were even more brutal than Nazi Germany, and the Japs were proud of it! FDR cut the supplies of oil to make a stand against the brutality in China.

I am not defending Japanese atrocities in China. But the hard strategic reality was that cornering them could only - and did - lead to war.

This war resulted in even more devastation for China.

If Roosevelt had simply threatened an embargo, and then gradually cut off their imports, the Japanese might have been intimidated into changing their ways.

The A-Bombs may have been over kill but at the time they weren't thinking of August 10 2010 they were thinking of August 10 1945. We blockade Japan they would have eventually given up, but the war would still rage in China, and on islands were we were still fighting Japanese holdouts claiming more lives. An invasion of Japan would have been a disaster, the US would've had to secure every square inch of the main islands and casualties for Operation: Downfall would have been 11 million
