I'm 34 years old and have yet to hear anyone pull off the shit Danny does!!! I'm not just saying that cause I love Tool, I'm saying that cause listen to all the music out there now. do you hear drummers doing the fills and all like danny does. !! sure metal is all fast and bad ass and any drummer that is good can solo. but the way Danny plays his parts in music is just out of this world!!
My vote goes to Daney because of what he does for percussion in songwriting. No one I've ever heard can make the drums come alive and become an integral part of every song like he can.
Danny to me is a lot more creative, innovative and unique. He puts a LOT of time and thought behind what he does. Portnoy is extremely talented, solid and direct. For me, a little too predictable and typical in the realm of modern rock drummers today. But I wouldn't vote for either one.. They're musicians. It's not a competition.

@themusicman777 You should listen to Danny Carey triad solo live. He's playing 3 different patterns with his hands and bass drum, while keeping time with left foot on high hats. True musical genious to write that and have it tie into the song perfectly. Portnoy is 1 of the most technical, Carey is on a different planet no1 plays like him. watch?v=2dwxTd5JZ50
In the end it is all subjective. There is no such thing as a better drummer or musician. Everyone has their great talent. Danny has amazing grooves and Portnoy has some technically creative drum parts. It all boils down to what get you off personally.
I vote for Mike Portnoy. Don't get me wrong Danny is awesome too and I also love Tool but this is an unfair contest because everyone knows who Tool is but not everyone knows Dream Theater. Tool is a commercial band and a miles more popular than Dream Theater. Some people will pick Danny because he is in Tool. Just as some videos on youtube people claim Travis Barker is bad ass. That is because well...he is popular and not judged by talent alone.
@themusicman777 HI music man, I probably didn't explain to well, I'm a fan of both, but when I listen to the music as a whole, I notice 2 different directions or approaches to music. Dream Theater if you listen to most of the structure and approaches from a drum point of view. Mike is more structured to do a lick mechanically, sometimes it overplays the melodies going. I hear Danny and how he places the licks within the structure are not mechanical...the music as a whole is enhanced...
@themusicman777 Tool is not a commercial band. They try to stay under the radar. DT is very advanced at their instruments but i cant listen to their stuff all the time because it gets dumb after a while. BTW Mangini is the best prog drummer by far. Not only is he the fastest in the world (or he was at 1 point) but even DT said he's better. But Carey is inhuman in his writing style. No1 can match him.
1 thing that is small but I notice that metal drummers never use is opening the high hats. I think it has to do with taking their foot off of the dbl bass pedal and most metal drummers cant play separate rhythms with each foot. Danny uses his high hats as keeping time in alot of songs while playing multiple polyrhytms over it. I love how Danny uses all of his kit and doesn't over use dbl bass or snare to make him sound good. There's just no1 who plays like him on his level.
You have to hear Liquid Tension Experiment if you haven't. It's spontaneous music, still technical and, for me, emotional. I haven't heard Tool enought, so I will, but at first I go with Mike eyes closed.
It doesn't even take an experienced drummer(although it's an extreme advantage) to hear the difference between Carey and Portnoy.
Carey's drumming, although obviously technical and insanely skilled, involves so much more emotion than Portnoy's. His drumming is unselfish, and truly reinforces every song's intent. Portnoy is an extremely great drummer, but his playing lacks the emotional attachment to each song that I believe Carey has.
Carey's strongest attribute is pure emotional creativity.
You'll find this odd I think you'll find Dream theater music is more unison music, pre arranged...structured. I've heard Portnoy do lick for lick not for note 97% the record. Everything is pre thought not extemporaneous, I hear Danny Carey and I feel and hear what he's doing on and off the Rhythym. The music is structured but he's a freerer creator to enhance the music. Danny's placement inspires..a deeper and approach and them to the entire composition. And he uses space like Miles Davis..
@nexusvision Actually Dream Theater has stated they often write out of influence. Not everything they do is planned or written out. As a matter of fact the whole Train Of Thought album was written and recorded in 3 weeks and they improvised...so they didn't plan it. I think people often give that band crap just because they can play their instruments well and write some outstandingly technical stuff. I think DT is more interesting than Tool but that is subjective.
Both of them are accomplished drummers technically.. That's for sure. But when it comes to feeling, creativity, and great sounding at polyrhythms, Danny owns without even trying.. Gotta listen to Aenima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days albums.. They're such kick ass musical experiences. Don't need any drugs guys.
i think Danny do more in the drums than Portnoy, cause Portnoy have the Siamese Monster and is a lot of drums and handle very styles and genres but Danny Carey makes a very large difference about technique and style...
I think both are amazing, but I got to say, Dany wouldn't leave tool for a crappy ass band, like portnoy did, I mean he offended DT in ways god can't tell. as for the drumming, when I listen portnoy I can't stop me from thinking that he learned a lot of carey's way of composing. Just listen to 6 degree's great debate, and don't tell you can't notice any tool influences there, that doesn't happen when I listen to carey's compositions. So both are great but Carey is the ONE.
there both just fuckin awsom.! they both have way different styles so you cant say one is better than the other, really its just up to the listener to choose which sound they like more. but saying that i would fucking love for them to both sit down and have a jam together and see them work off each other, anyone els think that would be insane! ?
cant believe people are actually sayin mike portnoy isnt good with and doest play many different time signatures outside 4/4, just goes to show that ye have probably never seen the guy play, danny is good, powerful and full of rhythm but mike is by far superior in probably every sense nearly, both class drummers but head to head, mike wins hands down
@eoinocheallaigh No he doesn't. Danny is much more musical, and that counts for more than technicality. Even so, Danny is probably more technical than Mike.
Tool is a lot about of Danny, but he does too much in a band where the rest do little. DT is 5 great musicians and they all play there share, MP does not need to overdo, he just keeps the level and is very creative. The vid is not fair, there are much more impressive Portnoy stuff in songs like In The Name of God, Hell's Kitchen, and the outros of Finally Free and Only a Matter of Time (the latter is pure genious how he builds up the double bass
If you had both guys cover the others songs. Carey would be bored and Portnoy as good as he is would be lost at some points. This has to go to Carey because he is much more innovative
Mike definitely. There is much better footage of what mike can do out there! everything in his video is some of his more boring stuff. I have seen Mike play live with John petrucci and at a drum clinic...amazing! Still danny is amazing non the less. Very high respects to them both...listen to portnoy's newer stuff, he is a lot more rhythmical now..
Mike Portnoy is boring, i personally liked avenged sevenfolds original drummer. Danny Carry BUILDS anticipation you can feel, he brings excitement to any true drummer. Compare dave matthews band drummer to portnoy next time. Danny carry drums are pleasure to my ears, portnoys... almost obnoxious. But theyre both successful, maybe compare that too.
Mike and dreamtheater dont seem to have any meaning at all in what they are playing. There just play cool riffs and fills. Music needs to be beautiful not cool.
definitely mike´s musics are more complex. Complex doesn´t mean better. Danny´s got the grip, the groove like few others do... i like to compare his touch for music to godsmack´s drummer - Shannon Larkin. in the end... they´re both too good.. can´t really say which is better...
Danny is an amazing feel drummer and is the 1st to tell you when he is over his head, Mike on the other hand can play anything handed to him but is static, he keeps time better than a metronome.
danny inspires me to create, mike makes me practice. also i believe space is grace so thats danny hands down..
40 or so years ago there would of been people doing the Ian Paice vs John Bonham comparison. on that one Paicey wins for me
I have read a few comments and I couldn't resist joining in and here is what I have to say, I have been listening to Tool since they started and I can't say the same for dream theater or liquid tension where Mike is mostly featured. Tool is my #1 band but I think Mike Portnoy can definitely play tool stuff and I can't be sure of the other way around. And I don't who said that portnoy plays 4/4 all the time but that is just fucked, you are idiot if you think that. originality = carey > mike
@belloinverno No he doesn't, Danny has much more understanding of the ART of drumming. Neil is not the pinnacle of drumming, don't be so easily influenced.
Danny. No competition. Mike is fast and technically tight but he hasnt just got the limb independance that dannys' got, the abilty to play 4 different patterns at the same time.
Danny Carey is an unstoppable force of nature, Mike Portnoy is a technical gem...Theres nothing more to say, i love em both, in their respective styles
MIKE-incredible musical talent with DT, make drums sing. does not play an odd time sequence just for the sake of playing it.. he is able to take that sequence and project it musically, he clearly shows its fun to play what he is doing and is incredible at the same time, does not take him 6 years to write a fucking insane album, but mike is full of himself, some material he write can be a little too goofy for my taste haha "NEIL PEART" ___|___
huge fan of both bands... i think its all personal opinion. both are great at what they do.(i couldn't survive without either ) my thoughts as a drummer.. DANNY-Plays insane poly rhythms, if your stoned he's great..right?alot of 3/4 after awhile will fuck with your musical timing. But it takes him forever to make something up, he plays drums more like a guitar than drums, and little bit to serious at times.... lighten up man
Even if they were comparable on the "technique" side, Danny would litteraly destroy Portnoy with his creativity and originality, his drum tracks are so beautiful i can't even explain why... that's music
Obviously they are two of the best but for me there's a lot more intelligence and creativity in Danny's playing like a slightly more evolved Mike (or Peart, or Bruford for that matter). For me I find Mike's playing more angular and boxy and Danny's more flowing and rounded, which my aesthetic prefers but hell if I could play half as good as either of them I'd die happy... haha.
Danny Carey plays with precision and power. Mike Portnoy seems to just throw his hands and feet around really quickly and hope he hits the right drum/cymbal combination, which a lot of the time he does. Lucky for him, but Danny all the way.
I love them both- but MP is a much better drummer over all. These clips weren't great clips of him performing. I've been a long time follower of both DreamTheater and Tool, and I like Tools music more, but drummer for drummer Mike has done more as a musician and is a better drummer. That said- these two aren't the best match up- totally different styles. Look into it and watch every video of them on this site- I have
i perfectly agree, Danny Carey doesnt do solos, and the creator and the follower is what ive been saying to people for years. But i would still have to say Danny Carey is the better creator, and there is many reasons for that but i will say one. On this website alone there is 10X more drummers that can attempt at MP and succeed. There is maybe 4 that can play Danny's songs. Either way, they are both amazingly tallented and both belong to some very amazing bands!
listening to Mike high.... is like listening to Danny not high! the improvisation at the end of parabola would have brought tears to the eyes of Portnoy himself!
I could tell just by listening to the first 30 seconds of Mike's performance, that I wouldn't like him as much as Danny. He's a good drummer, but Danny is just more graceful and powerful.
ok ok. im seeing alot of shit about Mike playing outside of 4/4. Thats alot of bullshit. Almost all the songs that Mike does are played in 4/4 you dumb fucks i should know i fucking play dream theater shit. Daney on the other hand is fucking amazing with the weird time signatures like the song he plays in this video "Lateralus". Daney jumps around from 8/8 to 7/8. its like that in almost all of TOOLs music. So yeah Daney Carey would drag his sack acrose Mikes face. End of story.
its hard to compare these two because they are two completely different drummers. And their styles fit their bands. Danny does a lot more odd jungle beats and stuff like that while Danny does mostly metal rockin out with technical parts. It would be easier to compare Portnoy to Peart or Bozzio. Which is why i don't have a favourite.
Danny. For soooooo many reasons. I'm not a musician, but I can rock some air drums. Much respect for Mike....he's amazing, despite of the keyboards in Dream Theater. Plus, who doesn't love a drummer who rocks a Kansas Jayhawks jersey!!!!
I do like both of them as Drummers To me Mike is a real smooth cat but if you are going to go heavy no doubt you would have to go with Danny's blistering full drum rolls
I like heavy so I have to go with Danny also there are so Manny Gr8 Drummers out ever check out the guy from Drumsience's now he is a bad ass drummer I'm just trying to learn how to be a gr8 Drummer so any advice is gr8ly appreciate
I'm sorry, but it's completely absurd to say that Danny plays better in odd time signatures than Mike does, have you heard a Dream Theater? Mike's better with odd time signatures, but danny is just an overall better drummer.
I clearly said danny was better than Portnoy as a drummer, if you didn't read that. Portnoy although has a better flow, and yes, he's is a lot better than Danny Carey with odd time signatures.
@Craziness31: he's is a lot better than Danny Carey with odd time signatures.
You're kidding me, right? Have you ever listened to the bridge in 'Lateralus'? How about all of 'Ticks & Leeches'? Danny Carey can play different time signatures with each limb. Get out of here.
@luckybolts7 Go check out every song played by Dream theater, maybe The Dance of Eternity , Learning To Live, This Dying Soul, or Metropolis Pt. 1 will change your mind. And yes, actually I have, and I would hop he could, because that's what is expected from a drummer.
@Craziness31 Danny doesn't have the creativity to make a song stand out? sorry, but i assure many people who are now fans of Tool began to hear it cause of Danny's playing, including me. You can't make that kind of statement without real evidence, you're pratically saying that you know people doesn't think a Tool song stands out cause of Danny's drumming and there's no way you could know that (unless you're a psychic).
@Craziness31 Wow, that's the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. Danny busts out polyrhythms five times before breakfast, and three more times after dinner. Have you ever listened to a Tool song? Danny is a master of limb independence.
@Craziness31 It's an advanced technique, which separates the good drummers from the great drummers, but more important than just playing a polyrhythm, is making it musical, which Danny does.
@PoeticJustice05 there's more than one advanced technique in drumming. There's a vast variety of things to do, and you can't say someone's better over who plays more polyrhythms.
@Craziness31 it separates the drummers between those can do them, and those who can't. Those who can shouldn't be compared, because then, it's just a matter of taste.
@Craziness31 "Danny doesn't have the creativity to make a song stand out with independence like Mike does." You said that. And I just corrected you. I'm not a Danny fanboy, but even you know that's bullshit, A monkey scratching his ass would note the drums always stand out in Tool songs, due to their creativity.
@PoeticJustice05 I wasn't comparing them, it's my opinion. There's no need to get offended. Danny does get creative, but other than his fills, it's the same thing. I'm a big Tool fan, and a fan of Dream Theater, and I just think Mike Portnoy plays better with a band than Danny does. Go hear his stuff with his Led Zeppelin tribute, Portnoy is just a little more versatile.
@Craziness31 How can you call yourself a Tool fan and say it's all the same? That is actually a dumber comment than your first one. Is 'Ticks and Leeches' the same as 'Reflection'? Or as 'Lateralus'? Or as 'Jambi'? Or 'Schism,' 'Triad,' 'The Patient,' 'Sober,' 'Aenema,' 'Thirty Six and Two,' 'Eulogy,' 'Vicarious,' 'The Pot,' 'Undertow,' 'Parabola,' 'The Grudge,' 'Stinkfist,' 'Intension,' 'Disposition'? Or any other Tool song? If you think they sound the same you haven't been listening.
@Craziness31 I've listened to Mike stuff with his LZ project, as well as his stuff with Liquid Tension Experiment. It's all in the same style. He plays heavy and fast, and is a great metal drummer, but Danny is actually much more versatile. You should check out his jazz fusion band called Volto. He also did many studio sessions with jazz artists before he joined Tool.
@PoeticJustice05 I've watched a lot of both of their stuff, and I completely disagree. Mike adapts more to music and has a better feel. Danny has better chops.
@Craziness31 Danny has probably the best feel of any rock drummer. Ask any professional drummer, and they will say Mike is great, but he's like a robot; no feel. He's a drum machine. Danny most definitely has better feel. They both have great chops, though. Danny definitley is more dynamic with his, though, that's why he has better feel, because of his dynamics.
@PoeticJustice05 Well when it comes to the music Mike plays, of course he's robotic because it's all about the math behind the music. What makes him special is that he finds something different to do every time. ANd I'm not saying one is better than the other, I think they're both great, I just like Mike's style better. I feel that he plays better with a band, which is my opinion, and if you disagree then go ahead. Either way I still believe that.
Okay, both of them are my favorite drummers, but Danny Carey plays shit Mike Portnoy can't and Mike Portnoy plays anything Danny Carey can. Danny's more creative, faster, smarter, has better odd time signatures, more technical, intracite.. He's just an all around better drummer than Mike Portnoy, but Mike is also a very amazing drummer.
@debopathak I don't think its a mater of what they can play. I'd bet dollars to pasos that if one can play it the other can play it. the distiction is in who can create it. Personaly I have see a ridiulously long solo by MP and it was all improv. DC I've never seen do a long improv solo so I can't judge. So as Ive only one competetor on the floor for creativity, I'll have to cast my vote for Mike. Sorry guys I love Danny but Mike is amazing to watch improv.
UHH IM sorry,..But Danny Carey projects enormous skill, and incredible dexterity of beats rendered!!! He is the more skilled Drummer by far of anyone out there,....
JUST LISTEN TO HIS DRUMMING ON ROSETTA STONED!!! AS GORDON RAMSEY WOULD SAY,....."FUCK ME!!!!!!" Lol!!!
@bullybeer crash-snare-crash-snare-crash-snare-crash-snare-crash-tom-tom-tom repeats, into simple progressive beat back into crash snare tom pattern. Really?! That''s supposed to be better than MP?! And btw go look up a real MP solo not this shit one that this obvious Danny Carey fanboy compiled for all the other Danny Carey fanboys to say ohh MP got pwned, MP sucks, Danny Carey is a machine, other fucking lame comments lol. MP is better hands down, if you can't accept that keep it moving fanboy
@MindstormRecs Nooo. If you know anything about drumming, then you would know Danny is better. Although MP is my 2nd favorite, he'll never be better than Danny. He's not as creative and he does the same typical fills\rolls in every DT song. I'm a huge fan of both Danny and MP, but Danny's better "hands down, if you can't accept that keep it moving fanboy."
@Atticus246 He didn't leave to play for them. He left because his DT tank was running on E. LaBrie said he's more than welcome to come back, and he probably will.
Sorry but Mike Portnoy is definatly the best drummer and anyone who plays or studies the drums should see this!! Danny is an amazing drummer but in my opinion ive seen a lot better drummers and mike portnoy is just one of them to mention!! If ye look into mikes playing, some of the time signatures he uses are amazing and his timing is flawless considering the standard of music he is playing to!
You've found an awesome part for DC but a s**t part (relativly) for MP. Honour thy father first 4 bars then we'll see a different outcome from people who are just discovering these amazing artists for the first time.
How come the only Portnoy footage is of his Dream Theater stuff? Sure, that's what he's best known for, but he's done just as much work outside of Dream Theater that reflect his drumming talents as much if not better than his work in Dream Theater. If you're curious as to just how good he is, look into Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, OSI, or even the last 3 or 4 Neal Morse albums.
danny carey would drum circles around mike portnoy. lateralus is one of tool's easier songs . look at some of their old stuff now thats intricate drumming. i noticed mike has a big drum kit but not using half of it . danny carey uses his whole kit !!!!
@toolelite462 mikes set is divided for different sounds he wants for certain songs. he does use his whole drum set just not for every fucking song they play. he switches up on his set for different tunes. I prefer mike, he good and so is carey.

i think Danny do more in the drums than Portnoy, cause Portnoy have the Siamese Monster and is a lot of drums and handle very styles and genres but Danny Carey makes a very large difference about technique and style...
777PICHON 8 months ago
I think both are amazing, but I got to say, Dany wouldn't leave tool for a crappy ass band, like portnoy did, I mean he offended DT in ways god can't tell. as for the drumming, when I listen portnoy I can't stop me from thinking that he learned a lot of carey's way of composing. Just listen to 6 degree's great debate, and don't tell you can't notice any tool influences there, that doesn't happen when I listen to carey's compositions. So both are great but Carey is the ONE.
arqdannie 8 months ago
Both are truly exceptional drummers in their own way, allthough i will go with Danny, i basically like his style of playing better.

coasternut3091 8 months ago
there both just fuckin awsom.! they both have way different styles so you cant say one is better than the other, really its just up to the listener to choose which sound they like more. but saying that i would fucking love for them to both sit down and have a jam together and see them work off each other, anyone els think that would be insane! ?
shitlocks21 8 months ago
cant believe people are actually sayin mike portnoy isnt good with and doest play many different time signatures outside 4/4, just goes to show that ye have probably never seen the guy play, danny is good, powerful and full of rhythm but mike is by far superior in probably every sense nearly, both class drummers but head to head, mike wins hands down
eoinocheallaigh 8 months ago
@eoinocheallaigh No he doesn't. Danny is much more musical, and that counts for more than technicality. Even so, Danny is probably more technical than Mike.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
Tool is a lot about of Danny, but he does too much in a band where the rest do little. DT is 5 great musicians and they all play there share, MP does not need to overdo, he just keeps the level and is very creative. The vid is not fair, there are much more impressive Portnoy stuff in songs like In The Name of God, Hell's Kitchen, and the outros of Finally Free and Only a Matter of Time (the latter is pure genious how he builds up the double bass
slashdelbarrio 8 months ago
Where can I get that sick version of Parabola??? I agree with Thinchap, I love Portney and He's awesome, but DC's style puts him over the top.
dogmasevil 8 months ago
If you had both guys cover the others songs. Carey would be bored and Portnoy as good as he is would be lost at some points. This has to go to Carey because he is much more innovative
LordHypnos93 9 months ago
Danny Carey has the creativity of a GOD. c'mon, fibonacci drum patterns? polyrhythms like you can't imagine? I LOVE Portnoy but Carey is a GENIUS.

But theyre both successful, maybe compare that too.

definitely mike´s musics are more complex.

Tool is my #1 band but I think Mike Portnoy can definitely play tool stuff and I can't be sure of the other way around. And I don't who said that portnoy plays 4/4 all the time but that is just fucked, you are idiot if you think that. originality = carey > mike

MIKE DANNY
Siyates747 1 year ago
huge fan of both bands... i think its all personal opinion. both are great at what they do.(i couldn't survive without either ) my thoughts as a drummer.. DANNY-Plays insane poly rhythms, if your stoned he's great..right?alot of 3/4 after awhile will fuck with your musical timing. But it takes him forever to make something up, he plays drums more like a guitar than drums, and little bit to serious at times.... lighten up man

Even if they were comparable on the "technique" side, Danny would litteraly destroy Portnoy with his creativity and originality, his drum tracks are so beautiful i can't even explain why... that's music
sexypoulpe 1 year ago
Obviously they are two of the best but for me there's a lot more intelligence and creativity in Danny's playing like a slightly more evolved Mike (or Peart, or Bruford for that matter). For me I find Mike's playing more angular and boxy and Danny's more flowing and rounded, which my aesthetic prefers but hell if I could play half as good as either of them I'd die happy... haha.
Travmon 1 year ago
Danny Carey plays with precision and power. Mike Portnoy seems to just throw his hands and feet around really quickly and hope he hits the right drum/cymbal combination, which a lot of the time he does. Lucky for him, but Danny all the way.
TheRedscorpion77 1 year ago
I love them both- but MP is a much better drummer over all. These clips weren't great clips of him performing. I've been a long time follower of both DreamTheater and Tool, and I like Tools music more, but drummer for drummer Mike has done more as a musician and is a better drummer. That said- these two aren't the best match up- totally different styles. Look into it and watch every video of them on this site- I have
brjson1 1 year ago
i perfectly agree, Danny Carey doesnt do solos, and the creator and the follower is what ive been saying to people for years. But i would still have to say Danny Carey is the better creator, and there is many reasons for that but i will say one. On this website alone there is 10X more drummers that can attempt at MP and succeed. There is maybe 4 that can play Danny's songs. Either way, they are both amazingly tallented and both belong to some very amazing bands!
cazy290 1 year ago
Danny also has a much more full and complex sound, coming out a much smaller set
cazy290 1 year ago
listening to Mike high.... is like listening to Danny not high! the improvisation at the end of parabola would have brought tears to the eyes of Portnoy himself!
cazy290 1 year ago
I could tell just by listening to the first 30 seconds of Mike's performance, that I wouldn't like him as much as Danny. He's a good drummer, but Danny is just more graceful and powerful.
Tahkayun 1 year ago
ok ok. im seeing alot of shit about Mike playing outside of 4/4. End of story.
zacd44 1 year ago
@zacd44 lmfao what dream theater shit are you playing?
colonelkermit 1 year ago
its hard to compare these two because they are two completely different drummers. And their styles fit their bands. Danny does a lot more odd jungle beats and stuff like that while Danny does mostly metal rockin out with technical parts. It would be easier to compare Portnoy to Peart or Bozzio. Which is why i don't have a favourite.

I'm sorry, but it's completely absurd to say that Danny plays better in odd time signatures than Mike does, have you heard a Dream Theater? Mike's better with odd time signatures, but danny is just an overall better drummer.
Craziness31 1 year ago
@Craziness31 is dream theater the only thing you portnoy fans think of.....i could give so many examples of danny, but not portnoy
shortuf0 1 year ago
@shortuf0
I clearly said danny was better than Portnoy as a drummer, if you didn't read that. Portnoy although has a better flow, and yes, he's is a lot better than Danny Carey with odd time signatures.
Craziness31 1 year ago
@Craziness31: he's is a lot better than Danny Carey with odd time signatures.
You're kidding me, right? Have you ever listened to the bridge in 'Lateralus'? How about all of 'Ticks & Leeches'? Danny Carey can play different time signatures with each limb. Get out of here.
luckybolts7 1 year ago
@luckybolts7 Go check out every song played by Dream theater, maybe The Dance of Eternity , Learning To Live, This Dying Soul, or Metropolis Pt. 1 will change your mind. And yes, actually I have, and I would hop he could, because that's what is expected from a drummer.
Craziness31 1 year ago
@Craziness31 Yeah, but Mike doesn't have the independence on each limb to do that, that's the difference.
artha5 8 months ago
@artha5 And Danny doesn't have the creativity as a drummer to make a song stand out with independency that Mike does.
Craziness31 8 months ago
@Craziness31 Danny doesn't have the creativity to make a song stand out? sorry, but i assure many people who are now fans of Tool began to hear it cause of Danny's playing, including me. You can't make that kind of statement without real evidence, you're pratically saying that you know people doesn't think a Tool song stands out cause of Danny's drumming and there's no way you could know that (unless you're a psychic).
artha5 8 months ago
@Craziness31 Wow, that's the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. Danny busts out polyrhythms five times before breakfast, and three more times after dinner. Have you ever listened to a Tool song? Danny is a master of limb independence.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@PoeticJustice05 Well hey, if being able to play eight polyrhythms in a day makes or breaks a drummer, then sure he's great. But sadly, it doesn't.
Craziness31 8 months ago
@Craziness31 It's an advanced technique, which separates the good drummers from the great drummers, but more important than just playing a polyrhythm, is making it musical, which Danny does.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@PoeticJustice05 there's more than one advanced technique in drumming. There's a vast variety of things to do, and you can't say someone's better over who plays more polyrhythms.
Craziness31 8 months ago
@Craziness31 it separates the drummers between those can do them, and those who can't. Those who can shouldn't be compared, because then, it's just a matter of taste.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@PoeticJustice05 but Mike Portnoy can do them, he just doesn't do them constantly.
Craziness31 8 months ago
@Craziness31 Then don't compare them.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@PoeticJustice05 I didn't...?
Craziness31 8 months ago
@Craziness31 "Danny doesn't have the creativity to make a song stand out with independence like Mike does." You said that. And I just corrected you. I'm not a Danny fanboy, but even you know that's bullshit, A monkey scratching his ass would note the drums always stand out in Tool songs, due to their creativity.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@PoeticJustice05 I wasn't comparing them, it's my opinion. There's no need to get offended. Danny does get creative, but other than his fills, it's the same thing. I'm a big Tool fan, and a fan of Dream Theater, and I just think Mike Portnoy plays better with a band than Danny does. Go hear his stuff with his Led Zeppelin tribute, Portnoy is just a little more versatile.
Craziness31 8 months ago
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@Craziness31 I've listened to Mike stuff with his LZ project, as well as his stuff with Liquid Tension Experiment. It's all in the same style. He plays heavy and fast, and is a great metal drummer, but Danny is actually much more versatile. You should check out his jazz fusion band called Volto. He also did many studio sessions with jazz artists before he joined Tool.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@PoeticJustice05 I've watched a lot of both of their stuff, and I completely disagree. Mike adapts more to music and has a better feel. Danny has better chops.
Craziness31 8 months ago
@Craziness31 Danny has probably the best feel of any rock drummer. Ask any professional drummer, and they will say Mike is great, but he's like a robot; no feel. He's a drum machine. Danny most definitely has better feel. They both have great chops, though. Danny definitley is more dynamic with his, though, that's why he has better feel, because of his dynamics.
PoeticJustice05 8 months ago
@PoeticJustice05 Well when it comes to the music Mike plays, of course he's robotic because it's all about the math behind the music. What makes him special is that he finds something different to do every time. ANd I'm not saying one is better than the other, I think they're both great, I just like Mike's style better. I feel that he plays better with a band, which is my opinion, and if you disagree then go ahead. Either way I still believe that.
Craziness31 8 months ago
@Craziness31 Ok, if you like his style better, that's cool, but everything else you've said until now indicated you thought Mike was better.

@debopathak I don't think its a mater of what they can play. I'd bet dollars to pasos that if one can play it the other can play it. the distiction is in who can create it.
