  • hes playing the overdubbed parts and the regular drum parts together

    holy shit!!!!

  • 2:25 most amazing fill ever!

  • @thomasednie Alright, you win that one. Now having been thoroughly comment bashed on Youtube, I've done my research. John Petrucci did write the drum parts for "Dramatic...", but MM did put a little bit of his own style into the parts; I don't think it's completely fair to say that Mike copied the parts. MM did write the drum parts for all of his stuff with Annihilator, and as for his Extreme stuff, he only wrote three drum parts, so it is fair to say that he probably did play "their" stuff.

  • @thomasednie Yeah, that's really all he does. It's not like he wrote all the drum parts for a new Dream Theater album or anything. And he most certainly DID NOT write drum parts for Extreme and Annihilator when he was a member of those bands.

  • @thomasednie that was so profound

  • @thomasednie are you sure? and when he did albums with extreme, annihilator and steve vai? he always played someone else music? XD

  • alex never overdubbed in the studio..period!

  • Was I the only one to notice the incredible one handed fill at 1:11 ?

  • Anyone bagging on Alex has no clue on how good he is........just cause sitting at home you can copy a beat doesnt mean the feel is right.................Alex has had great beats, fills and a certain feel in his drumming...........none of his songs sound the same..........one of my favorites and a big influence.............not trying to be the fastest, flashiest or most popular..................Mangini is great.......like the new cd and I like his attitude much better than MP.

  • to fast man , slow the hell down bro'

  • karate kid on drums

  • what the hell... is he doing snare drum rudiments on the bass drum? is he doing bass drum rudiments??? what the fuck????

  • Gay.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY your love porntoy can't do this.. who is the real gay? XD

  • @MlKEPORNTOY Hilarious name dude! No one takes you seriously, but that´s the plan, right?

  • Sorry folks no disrespect to AVH, but he is not on the same planet as Mangini, and I am a Alex van halen fan

  • Michael is ambidextrous.

  • @dbproductionz

    thank you captain obvious

  • @cpljones69

The question was posed. Read the thread prior to being a smartass.

"Amazing drummer. This dude has chops no doubt about it. The best part about watching him is... Is he right handed or left handed?!?!?!?!"

  • Whoever says this isn't good is an idiot. Listen...

  • I'm confused, is he left handed? O__o

  • @iLoveAltNation open handed

  • ALEX VAN HALEN , its all that has to be said ! HOT FOR TEACHER probably the greatest drum intro of all timeYIKES!

  • surprising that the time falls apart during the HH shuffle parts.... guitar player is out of time with mike....

  • @WhyTheHorseface Yeah i heard it fall out of time to..i thought i was crazy..

  • He played it better than Alex..

  • It doesnt really matter how good Mike MAngini is or how Good AVH is at it because bottom line 1. They're both monsters behind the kit and B. AVH played the original therefore Mike is playing it wrong so therefore the problem is solved, no im not bashing I am just saying the original way it was written is the right way and this is not the right way ladies and gents but it just isn't the VH feel

  • LOL...there are mistakes all over this version. Don't get me wrong, Mike is a monster but this is NOT Hot for Teacher. I've yet to see anyone play HFT with the right feel like AVH.

  • @paistekid Take a look at all the comments below...... most people, including myself, are 100% sure AVH´s version is an overdub.. I have seen VH live three times during the 80´s and 90´s and Alex where nowhere near producing the HFT intro on the album.... Mike can do it LIVE due to his superior hands and feet technique and his ability to split his brain into four - he rules when it comes to polyrythms - e.g. check out his other solos, the new one for DT and the one he did on tour with Vai...

  • @nengstro Excellent analogy of what is really happening in the song. You are so spot on. I spent five or six V.H. shows working backstage watching Alex very closely and even though he's a monster drummer he is not a mike mangini. And the comment made in the peanut gallery is certainly not from a musician .Why would a drummer even want to play it exactly the same as the original .That's 's being a total copy kat with no musical imagination .

  • 3 deaf people tried listening to this.

  • best version out here! Listen to the song, and you'll hear this:

Within the 1st second, Alex (mistake?) clicks his stick.

At 6 seconds, another pattern clearly comes in "over" the first. (overdub?)

At 10 seconds, a tom is added (which may or may not be overdubbed)

At 22 seconds the shuffle groove starts.

So this tells us that Alex did the very beginning with his hands, not his feet.

It is indeed played by Alex, not a car engine revving lol

    Might be one overdub.

    Bottom line? Bad ass!

  • Grazy-Man.. =)

  • He's playing what Alex Van Halen plays with his hands on his feet. This guy is a monster

  • i think he will do just fine in Dream Theater. Ive been a DT fan forever, I will still miss Mike Portnoy :(

  • Alex arranged this, wrote it and recorded in 1983. Very very original to this day, pure Van Halen. Mike does a great job of playing the style and the opening groove that AVH created. Alex is an innovator and legendary song maker. That whole 1984 album is a must for drummers to listen to! I am sure Mike was influenced by Alex Van Halen's technique, style, energy and SOUND! Mangini is a perfect fit for Dream Theater and a hell of a musician. Got to love the guy. Go Mangini!

  • Maybe I should've read some of your comments before posting my last entry.

I feel the need to add this: I can personally attest to the fact AVH did NOT play the opening with his feet on 28 January 1984, in Biloxi, Mississippi. I had the perfect seat to watch his playing that night.

Obviously that doesn't mean he never could do it, but I've been following VH for 30+ years, been playing drums longer than that, and feel comfortable speculating he's never been able to do it.

    ..|..

  • Never forget the disappointment I felt when seeing Van Halen in 1984, and watching Alex play the opening to this on an electric drum programmed to sound like a bass drum.

Mangini can do in reality what Alex Van Halen pretended to do.

  • @pensacolian Heard That!!!!!!!!

  • @pensacolian obvious not drummer is obvious...

  • @pensacolian Exactly!!!! Ever since that song came out I said that must be some studio trick or click track that was Fricking up that bass pedal. I saw VH in 78 or 79 and of course that song wasn't out yet so never saw it done live but being a drummer it sounded like crap. Like someone was learning a smooth roll with their feet but couldn't get it right. Pure crap. If I couldn't do it right it would of never seen the light of day! Be real or get off the throne.

  • wow heels up!

  • @longirons6 heels down is so hard....i only do that if i want to play soft(only necessary for swing playing)

  • 3 people still think Joey Jordison is the best drummer... Shame on them

  • @Croketas Those silly people lol

  • @iggypopster2 Ok. I'm not saying that I don't believe you, but, where is the documentation? I just want to see the proof, that's all. And I'm pretty sure that Alex can do it live, I've seen him do it.

  • he's the only who is able to exactly perform that intro without mixing overdubs. Not even alex van halen in person.

  • @bradiporitmico That's not true. Alex does it in concert without overdubs every time.

  • You can see Mike wale a 4min the time cuz the guitar was loosing it :P

  • If you're a drummer, you'll be able to see why he is the number one today ......

  • One of the best drummers in the world---now or ever. He is, however, not an effective teacher. He has serious verbal communication deficiencies. Take it from me. I wasted a lot of money at Berklee for private lessons under Mike. Maybe some of his other students have had a more rewarding and positive experience than I did under his tutelage It's one thing to be able to do something as magnifcently as Mike does, but it is something else to teach someone else how to do the same thing.

  • @Flamsick I think you're right in that there is something to playing drums, and there's another element or dimension to teaching others how to do it. It seems like if a person was good at playing drums (or anything really) they could teach others how to do it. However, as a teacher myself, (not drums) I've seen / been under the tutelage of others who couldn't teach and it's very frustrating.

  • MANGINI IS A BAMF!

  • would of preferred thomas lang

  • Ahora sí que será difícil sacar un cover de DT!!

  • nailed it

  • i know his nefew

  • hahahaha, Portnoy is the Dave Weckl of Metal^^.According to this vid theres no argument left. Boring stuff.

  • I hope he's really DT's pick

  • I hope he's DT's pick

  • Mangini or Portnoy??? Who wins?

  • Amazing!! Alex wishes he could do this all by himself....

  • My shins hurt just watching this!!

  • Mike Mangini eats breakfast, shits it out later in the day and it becomes what we know as Mike Portnoy. Stop mention Dream Theater in Mike Mangini videos, Portnoy is shit compared to Mike Mangini

  • @thnk4urself Dude, I'm hoping Mangini is the guy they got to replace Portnoy. What better man to play in the virtuoso band than Mangini?

  • @RaidonSama well especially for them because they're part metal band and mangini can play metal as good as anyone. A lot of people can play metal but few can play it properly

  • @thnk4urself Not really. Mike portnoy is actually extremely talented. You have to consider he wrote the drums in his songs, which are difficult to say the least, to match the music, not to show the extent of his skill. He also formed, and essentially MADE dream theater what it is today, he truly WAS dream theater.

  • @XvxBadOmenxvX that's exactly why I don't like his style. he writes that shit, and it's completely uninspired and has no feeling or soul to it. it's not creative at all, it's just his attempt at a drum clinic instead of creating what's best for the song. He's ruined almost all of their songs by either overplaying, of overgrooving at the wrong time

  • @thnk4urself I'm pretty sure Alex Van Halen doesn't care what you think.

  • @NICKHAM16 WTF are you talking about? I didn't mention Alex Van Halen. But I'm sure if I met him, he would care what I think, you apparently do

  • @thnk4urself Who, Mike Portnoy? Even though I think that Portnoy is super over-rated, there's a huge difference between what you like in a song and what's best for it. For example, I think Portnoy has written great drum songs, such as Panic Attack and Constant Motion. I think it's the rest of the band that could use some work. One of the best writers for drums is Gene Hoglan, in my opinion, because he makes the drumming crazy but not over-playing. Listen to "Shitstorm" for reference.

  • @Bassbait I agree that they all overplay but I think panic attack and constant motion are great examples of mike doing it too. Hell I do it too if I don't spend enough time on a song or have trouble connecting with it but from a listening perspective, to me it's pretty easy to either play a song perfectly on the drums or to play it with no feel. Maybe it's my inspirations are too feel heavy, danny carey and tim alexander

  • @Bassbait you are for sure right gene is a master genious, and yes shitstorm its simple Insane, the double bass drum work on it its hard to believe that was done by a Man a not a drum Machine,,,,,even when hes a F,,ing Whale jejeje

  • @XvxBadOmenxvX Agreed

  • This is the drummer from dream theatre right?

  • @TheRunescapeDragon2

    no he is mike portnoy

  • you know what the best part of this video is? at about the 3:45 mark during the last little quiet guitar part the guitarist starts fucking up and loses track of the time even though Mike is playing a little hi hat jazz riff. Didn't matter, the guitar player still fucked up and instead of Mike insisting on his being the correct time (it was) he stops keeping time and waits patiently for the entrance point for the fill and final ass kicking jam. that right there is a drum lesson for ya!

  • Ya, nice try... :(

  • singer sucks :D

  • Amazing drummer. This dude has chops no doubt about it. The best part about watching him is... Is he right handed or left handed?!?!?!?!

  • Excelente...

  • Mike is just so good that the frontmen are his backing band :)

  • monstro....aversome

  • Some of you (the ones dissing Alex Van Halen) are idiots. Alex Van Halen multi-tracked the original and Mangini is able to emulate it live. Okay... I'd love to hear any one of you try to play Alex Van Halen's portfolio live as well as he does. I'm certain most of you would be thoroughly and shamefully schooled. Of course, it would be fun to see...especially posted to YouTube. Then everyone could laugh at your sorry asses! :)

  • @sp3ci4lkpo

    Alex didn't multi-track the original.

  • this is the best! alex can't even hope to do that

  • @SuperGilbs alex would kick his ass

  • Yeahh, where is Alex Van Halen?!?! lol

  • The hot for teacher drum intro is overdubbed, he plays it how Alex only wished he could

  • @JoeMetalMaster ya damn right

  • @JoeMetalMaster No it aint, that's common mis-conception. Listen to some bootlegs from 1984, AVH plays the intro at random not only at the strt but at thend of the song as well.

  • @JoeMetalMaster You're such an idiot. I only wish I could hear you say that in person so I could slap the f*ck out of you. LOL

  • mike is the man... for real!!

  • Glen Sobel covers it way better

  • @dustyorb uhmmmm.. no he doesn't! :D

  • this is actually a good mangini video, i dont like alot of his other stuff.

first person ive seen that can actually pull off this song

  • As amazed as I am... Are we missing the triplets on the bell ride during the guitar solo? Just asking?

  • Somethings missing? I guess Alex Van Halen is just as good at playing hard rock as be-bop. That could be a difference. As spectacular as MM is it's clear that it don't mean a thing if you ain't got that swing.

  • @heyawhaw

Are you crazy? MM is one of the most well rounded drummers out there.

  • holy shit! thats as close as it gets! :) 5*s!

  • Redraider is a retard, Alex Van Hallen. Should go change his diaper. Mike starts failing apart around 1:40. Listen and you wil hear about 5 sticking errors. You have been to school. Alex played this song for 25 and never missed. P.S. he wrote it aswell. Ever heard of Van Hallen (They are just a small rock band)

  • Failing??? I certainly don't hear it. BTW: There is no need to be so RUDE to RedRaider.. Just because you are a big VH fan does not mean that other people's opinions about VH or AVH should be trashed.. just sayin!

  • hmmm... Van HaLLen? hmmm something doesn't sound right... ever heard of not being a stupid snob who makes himself feel good about himself by bashing real musicians? (It is just a little tip that will help you survive in the real world)

  • FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!

  • DIRTY

he does it better than the guy who actually plays it lol

the guy doesnt even do that solo live lmao meanwhile mike is doin it lik nuthin

  • Overdubs??????? Were you watching the same video the rest of were?? Not only does Mike play with incredible speed, he has GREAT meter!! Overdubs???? Are you serious?!?!? You must not be a musician. If you are, I wouldn't want to be in a band with you. I can already tell you suck....... Overdubs????????????? HUH?!?!?

  • lol i say he plays this better that alex can

  • but it don't swing like AVH!! AVH is the master at the double bass shuffle, Alex's musicianship, sound, feel and swing is in a different league. Though I think Mike Mangini has done a respectful job here, Mike is one hell of a drummer!! A lot of these drummers might be able to play these songs faster, louder etc, but they cannot write a piece of music like Hot For Teacher etc. Thats the difference IMO.

  • wow i have never seen anyone play that intro so precise!

  • wow spot on!

  • NICE NICE NICE

  • omfg.

  • 20.1 per sec.

  • mike is way better and he nailed that inrto alex has like never done that intro live lol

  • becos alex cant

  • wat u think about the recroding computer generated?

  • no dont think so. . .

  • Overdubs. And lots of them.

  • @starwarsfreak1997 your a dumbass mike magini did this as a tribute to alex is one of the best he doesnt get the credit he deserves

  • Damn... dude crushes this!!

  • dont tell me he actually uses a zht

  • I think that we should be watching Alex do this song no?

  • sorry, but no, we shouldnt. Mike nailed the intro. Alex, to my knowledge, has never done the intro live. Who could blame him? lol.

  • whats the advantage to four hi hats?

  • different tones and easier to reach/go to from other drums.

  • those high hats to the right sound amazing does anyone know what kind they are?

  • Yeah, those do sound awfully good, don't they?

  • yeah thats why i said they sound amazing lol

  • grat drummer

  • This fuckin guy is amazing!!!!!! Jesus!!!!!I´ll love to get some lessons from him. Mike´s the man!!!!!Cheers!!

  • @estigia go to berklee college of music!

  • @estigia Go to Burkley then.

  • @xDream76x Berklee*

  • @estigia he teaches at berklee.... private lessons

  • @estigia go to Berklee College of Music

  • Mangini is crazy lol

  • world's fastest drummer ^^

1340andsomething hits in 1 min.. (20 hits per sec!!!!!)

  • 1247

  • yeah! thats the number! thanks!

  • he was on time warp and they said he did something like 22 per seccond

  • 1203 per minute

  • @thespewking 1247

  • gets better every year...lol..thnx for the info

  • ...Alex Van Halen?

  • so david lee roth was still with van halen?? i alway thought that was his solo thing..come to think of it, it was van halen..thanks brodda.

  • Yeah, played on the original. Never knew the guy was that good on drums...

  • @ckyisyourfuture better

  • @ckyisyourfuture If it was Alex van halen he'd be dropping sticks and It'd still be playing.

  • @ckyisyourfuture try Alex Van Halen x10000 haha :D

  • @ckyisyourfuture Much better than Alex Van Halen. Mike is an extraordinary drummer and an absolute showman!

  • @7mileshi um...fuck you. Alex actually WROTE this song buddy, mike just learned to copy it.

  • the man's a machine.

  • Dude got so many styles it just aint fair fuk'n killer

  • i like this better than the origonal.

  • watch his fucking feet!!!

  • Awesome performance. Guitar player looses tempo at 3:48, lol and mike stops playing. that was funny. Mike plays this song so well.

  • bastard

  • my thoughts exactly.

but how the fuck does alex do that is what i wanna know!

  • I love greg lol

  • huh? on 1984?

  • what?? explaine that please¡¡

  • Aye. I've heard this from people in the industry.

  • Yeah I agree, what a bastard !!! :-)

    Mangini, respect.

  • Just to set the record straing! 'Hot for teacher' first appeared on the Van Halen album '1984' wit Ales Van Halen on drums. Gregg Bisonette was the drummer on the Vai/sheehan era of David Lee Roth's solo career.

Whether DLR as a solo played Hot for teacher I have no idea haha! Two good drummers though!

  • dope!

  • hypercane, the backing band is sick too. Their drummer Dana Spellman is not far behind mangini at all. Check those guys out in boston sometime.

  • The only thing I've found to be off with this performance is the ride pattern during the intro. On the album, it's been transcribed as being a 16th note triplet where only the first two 16ths are played on the beat, followed by a dotted 8th on the next (or a

16th followed by two 16th rests).

    For example

    //r /. //r /. or //r /rr //r /rr

    Hope this makes sense.

KILLER performance, regardless. Everything else spot on. Cheers!

  • EDIT: Just watched intro again. He does nail the ride pattern.
