That thing came within a half mile of my house. I was on the lower level of my house looking out front from the garage, my wife was in the basement yelling for me to come down there. As I found out later, if I'd been in my back yard I would have seen it go through Riverside and Northmoor.
i remember looking in the direction of this thing. the clouds got so low i couldnt see it about 10 miles away, real dark spot though. heard this thing was horribly violent.
See that's the distance I would like to be when I see a tornado, because there is plenty of room to get out of there if need be. Unfortunetly I have yet to see one.
I live over on the east side of Independence off 291, and we really don't get tornadic activity in my town, though last year was quite interesting with Arbys being destroyed in May and a cell going up 291 Highway a few months later (though I didn't see much).
Yes, but not downtown. The video is in the suburbs across Kansas Speedway, and in the foreground is a Cabela's. This is right at the "loop" of interstates around the city on the NW side.
We were pulled off safely on the side of a road off of the Interstate. There were other people around in the distance, we could hear them yelling. But nobody right next to us.
Well for the most part, the storm is the one that causes the tornado to form by the storm rotating first. It's called a mesocyclone. If the meso gets intense enough, it can spawn a supercell tornado.
its amazing how the whole storm will spin when its big like this one. ive seen some where it looks like the tornado creates its own spinning storm thousands of feet high
That was a bad day. I remember that day.

I'm not sure why they did that. Sometimes sirens will cycle and end even though the warning is still valid.
aprwx 3 years ago
Why did the tornado siren sound briefly then stop? Please tell me they had battery backup and wasn't because of the powerlines snapping!
maestro300 3 years ago
i was 8 when this happened the sirens were hit by the tornado so they where destroyed. thats why the sound stoped.
