  • hey hey! Have you thought about - fast abs magic (do a google search)? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my GF got great Six pack abs and lost a truck load of of fat with it.

  • bullshit full court basketball is beyond intense calorie consumptions

  • what about jumping rope??

  • I think basketball is a wonderful aerobic exercise. I disagree with him.

  • @PierreReal

you only have to look at Phelps' diet.. stupid amount of calories.. marathon runners dont even need that many calories, so i think that proves a point..

  • I just swam 64 lengths in 60 min and i feel way more knackered then after a 10mile run, swimming beasts all

  • I do my running in the park, the city put there a nice track for runners... the one with that softish, redish emulsion. The track is 1150 meters long. I usually run for 6 or 7 laps in one seance, but on some days when I'm bored I do that twice. I swear that the track is getting shorter every day :D Its getting boring. I need to find something else, like running uphill.

  • Steve is a stationary bike that has different levels of intensity along with intervals good for burning fat.PLEASE! respond.Thank you.

  • @selinah3 I talked about your statement / question on my 4/30/11 BlogTalk Radio show. Search Steve Turano!

  • Steve,

Good straight forward advice mate. Thanks for making it simple to understand.

  • Awesome video. Kkeep up the good work...awesome!

  • go Florida

  • Thanks, I love your body too?

  • i think cyclings better

  • What's faster to burn calories.... " power walking" or running?

  • @Carinaduran32 It depends on your conditioning. If you're in shape, jogging or running. If you're not then power walking.

  • hi steve. One thinh i dont understand is calesthenics. I know u make a point about needing high intensity exercise to cause muscular growth, but is there any value in doing for example hundreds of push ups dips etc, exept for endurance.. i dont understand how someone (mike tyson) can weigh 230 pounds of pure muscle,, and according to himself, only ever did intense calesthetics.. thanyou

  • @BodyPerformanceTV thank u a lot i have a question see im gonna tell u everything im 14 years old i got belly fat that im trying to lose and this is what im doing 1 day i do 15 minutes of jump roping which brings me to 1 question what if i mess up can i keep going ? also the other day i do 6 minutes of crunches, 2 minutes of leg raises , 2 minutes of corebridge and since i dont wanna gain any weight i dont eat school food and i eat boiled chicken and 2 pieces of loaf what you think i should do?

  • @mw2video1 I answered your question on my 11-04-10 BlogTalkRadio com show. You can listen there or on iTunes. Search Steve Turano. • @BodyPerformanceTV i went on the webiste its only till november 3 , 2010 theres no 11/04/10 so...where should i do to see the answer to my question???

  • what about jump rope????

  • I think the best is walking sick hills. In the San Francisco area we have some sick hills about 45 degrees. That will get your wind going with no impact.

  • What about running for longer than 20-30 mins. Is there a plateau stage where the optimal fat burning period goes away?

  • @devinc277 Nope. The more cardio the more fat loss.

  • @shinbi18 I also host a BlogTalkRadio com show. You can listen there or on iTunes. Search Steve Turano. Recent shows can be heard on my site home page at the bottom once they upload. • @shinbi18 Not at good as walking, jogging or running.

  • 6 swimmers disliked this video.

  • what about inline skating/roller blades? thanks for the upload

  • @jl040558 You have to do it long and hard since it's a bit too easy. Compare walking or jogging a mile vs. roller blading a mile.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV long and hard? so sex with out of the question?

  • what about skipping (jump rope)?

  • @jordanrbl26 It ok but not as good as jogging.

  • @jordanrbl26 I also host a BlogTalkRadio com show. You can listen there or on iTunes. Search Steve Turano. Recent shows can be heard on my site home page at the bottom once they upload. • Steve, how about jumping ropes? is it a good Aerobic exercise?

  • @xxxnicolxxx Not really. Walking is better. I addressed that on today's 6-30-10 BlogTalkRadio com show.

  • ok but a lot of time I do aerobic excersise but I tend to loose a lot of body mass sometimes. Even when I do a little weight lifting afterwards. What am I doin wrong...Please

  • I know you aren't high on the p90x but I've just completed the 90 days and seen great results with the help of you videos. Do you think the plyometrics video is better than walking and running for calorie burn even though you do pause between each exercise? Im asking because it takes a lot of motivation to get up and jump around over going outside and getting a good jog on and I want to know if plyo gives me the best bang for my buck.

  • like your videos, not sure this one is the most accurate with having to include all of the legs, skip rope or hit a heavy bag for 20-30 minutes daily and see if you're not losing weight

  • Interval training mixed with body weight exercises are very good aerobic exercises.

  • A COMBO OF WALKING JOGGING AND SPRINTING IS REALLY GOOD! But cycling in a higher gear @90 to 120 rpm is best.

  • what about 10/10 interval where you run at high intensity for ten second then stop for ten seconds and it keeps going on? is it as effective?

  • @davidbiton ive heard 2:1 ratio is the best 2 minutes then 1 minute rest or 10 minutes running 5 minutes rest would be a bit boring and long time, so i would do an active rest

  • it's been 3 weeks and so far im at 252.5.. which is about 5.5 lbs.. I know i've gained some muscle b/c of the mirror and my strength increases..

*The more veggies and fiber i include in those 2000-2300 cals the more satisfied i feel..

*I always increase the weight, reps, or sets from the previous week when lifting

*I make sure I get 7-8hrs of sleep

Steve ur videos are definitely the best Ive come across.. I feel like I could do what im doing now for life..

  • @green3341 Im at the beginning of my 18th week.. last week I weighed in at 233.0 which is about 20lbs lost from when i first posted and 25lbs total so far in 18 wks(not bad, very decent).. i now generally eat anything from 2100-2500 cals a day.. I know that increase is attributed to how active I've become b/c my appetite has increased, if im feeling hungry then I will eat, there's no need to starve..

  • @green3341 the more active u are the more ur appetite increases naturally..

  • I started at 258, I eat 2000-2300cals(max) daily consisting of anything: pizza, steak, spaghetti, etc. as long as it totals between 2000-2300cals, also I may eat 2 meals a day and snack in between or eat 4 meals a day and snack in between(doesnt matter), I lift weights on MWF and play basketball on Tues/Thurs. for about 1hr to1and1/2hr(including water breaks, new team selections, etc.).. I dont lift weights or play ball AT ALL on weekends and I may cheat on my diet but more than often not..

  • Let me tell you someting... If you swim intensly for an hour you are going to burn a good chunk of calories. If you jump rope for an hour you are going to burn a shit load of calories. It does not require a hole leg recruitment to be effective cardio. I dont know what cracker jack BS he got this from but its not true. I use an arm cycler at my gym and it burns a ton of calories using smaller muscles. As far as his other examples like basket ball these are NOT aerobic sports they are anarobic.

  • i agree with you and you can tell his doesnt know shit since obviously it looks like he is not a very fit guy i think he is kind of a little bit fat

  • How effective is the cross trainer compared?

  • is running in place as effective as a treadmill or a real run outdoors?

  • No. Not even close.

  • 24/m/CA

Steve has soldified what I've been saying for awhile now...

...the best cardio exercises are running/jogging/walking.

  • are 20 minute intrevals good??

  • thts wat i do. walking

  • i always heard that swimming burned the most calories, interesting

  • Hey Steve,

I run 20 min before doing weights and dont rest between sets over 15 seconds but still at the end of work out feel a bit cold! is that normal? should I run some more half way trough weights?

  • No. My suggestion would be to warm up more doing exercises not running. Just do the warm-up sets with lower weight.

  • I thought you were supposed to rest 2 mins between sets for hypertrophy...not so much rest for stamina

  • HIIT

  • If I do jogging for aerobic excercise should I dothis every day?

  • Explain how the step test is completed

  • I've actually wondered this for a while now, so I'll ask. Is the step test an effective cardio? (I'm assuming yes since it's basically a non-mechanical stairmaster)

  • For the average person who is not trained to swim competitively (most people get in the gym pool and do a lap or two and stop or sprint and stop for 5 min...) I could see why you would think it's not aerobic. But swimming actually uses your legs (kicking), as well as your upper body, whereas running is primarily legs and arm flailing. Swimming is primarily arms/abs and leg flailing.

  • @jrg305 It's still not as strenuous on the legs. A great work out, easier on the joints, and much better than maybe walking or biking. But breathing is irregular and you're using your core and arms, muscles which are not as large as the legs. Not to mention technique. How you run can determine how much you burn as well. Same goes for swimming, but running puts more stress on the larger muscles of the body and the heart. Like how you'll likely be cool swimming, but not running. Just my two cents

  • As a competitive swimmer for the past 12 years, I have to disagree with swimming being 'not great' for cardio. It takes knowledge of technique and efficiency to be able to turn it into a cardio exercise (non-stop, long duration). It's also something you can do for the rest of your life rather than blow your knees out running right? You also didn't cover interval training. Long duration low intensity is good for fat burn as a % of energy used, but not a rate of fat energy used.

  • i agree with you, i think swimming is a great cardio excercise

  • Skipping is good but the problem with skipping is that you tend to get bored after a while. The best exercise is the one you do enjoy doing it regularly. I do walking regularly because I find it addictive and enjoyable.

  • I saw a video on the MD web with Kai Green, before Arnold Classic. He did use the steeper...

and he won the Arnold Classic.

  • Thanks Steve! But what about the elliptical machine?! i do that for 45 mins to an hour.

  • me too

  • I would have thought a game like squash would be a great cardio workout Steve?

  • I like them both and do both. Slower, steady, longer cardio will burn a bit more calories. HIIT will increase your cardio capabilities.

  • Hi Steve, are you a fan of interval training or or is it better to have a more steady motion

  • Thank you!!!

  • Great vid! Really reassuring for people just starting out. Totally encouraging. Thanks! One question: What about stairclimbers?

  • Good for people who have been training for a while. But they are a bit too difficult for somebody who just started training.

  • Thanks Steve. Your fantastic. Ive been wasting my time doing abs workouts for too long. Im going to start running/jogging/walking tommorow!

  • 30 minutes 3 x 4 times a week.

  • i cant run very far without getting tired so how long would you suggest walking for?

  • Thank you!

  • Low carb diets are no they effective because the body scarifices muscle and uses it for energy because the body is not eating carbs. So much of the weight loss is water and muscle. Oatmeal with protein is fine. It's still the total number of calories eaten a day.

  • You're welcome and thank you for watching. Not to brag but most "fitness experts" don't train with true intensity so they don't know many of these concepts. Nor do they really continue their education to seek out the truth. They just believe the garbage posted by companies seeking to make money using websites and magazines and people's ignorance.

  • Your videos are truely enlightening. Thanks.

  • Steve! You forgot jumping rope! It so good! And fun! You have legs, arms, shoulders ..

  • Running in place is not quite as good as running but if you did it longer it would give you the same effect. I would walk AND do the mini tramp. Mix it up a bit.

  • I used to jog and always maintained. Now I have problems with my knee so I bought a mini trampoline and I run in place on it. It feels similar to jogging and my thighs and buttocks are getting developed. Do you think it has the same aerobic benefits? or would you think that walking is better?

  • I'm going to start jogging every morning.

  • Not to promote a certain product but taebo is a really really good cardio work out its about 40 minutes and you will sweat, if any ones interested search on here and you should be able to find it i think sweetlady something uploaded it but Ive gotten results and its not a gimmick.

  • Not bad but it still wouldn't as good as jogging around the neighborhod. It might even be more difficult than walking or jogging.

  • It's not bad but I don't think it's the best. I prefer walking, jogging, biking because these are a bit more intense and involve complete use (flexation) of the legs whcih means you'll burn more calories because the legs are big muscles. The more often you walk & jog and the longer you do it the more calories you will burn. Also eat 5 less bites at each meal. These things will help you lose weight.

  • Im going to tell everybdy the secret to burning fat right now so get your note pads out!one word> SPRINTS by foot by bike by water!all animals are designed to hunt!why do u think a cheater is so lean and strong?why do think 100m sprinters are so lean and muscular?think about it!its right in front of you,its basic,it makes sense. The body is efficient and maintains more muscle wit least amount of B.F when used the way its designed to be used.I recommend sprint intervals by bike in gym or outdoors

  • That's pretty good.

  • what i do is run up and down a set of 14 stairs in sets of 10.

i do usually about 4 sets. Is that still good enough?

  • tae kwon do is excellent for that as well

  • 1000 cals in 40 mins? You serious? Thats sound ridicioulus to me...You walk like 40 minutes and you only lose 200 calories

  • i love u steve keep us motivated!

  • or one of those heavy people that ends up with destroyed knees from running. i point you to step 2.

does muscle mass just happen? oh yeah i forgot only lazy people do resistance workouts.

  • sure. if you want to eat for 5 minutes and work it off for 2 hours knock yourself out.

  • losing weight has nothing to do with aerobic exercise. the calories used are trivial compared to a frikken donut.

step 1. eat less and eat better.

step 2. gain muscle mass to increase your base metabolism.

    step 3. enjoy your life.

  • it doesnt matter if you start and stop but its really bad for your heart

  • GOOD INFO!!!!

  • Thanks mate!! good information!

  • wow.....i never knew that.....i skateboarded for years which is stop, start , stand around.....get injured, take two weeks off then start up again..........and even when i was doint that i always had a gut......but ever since ive been doing the tredmil i notice major weight loss results in a short period of time...........steve youre great......i really appreciate theses videos

  • Thank you for agreeing with me :P

  • excuse me????? Swimming is so healthy and makes you lose weight fast!! I even lost 14 pounds because of it, while I already have a healthy BMI! You'll be moving you're legs very much and they have to work harder because of the pressure that the water gives your body..

    Thought you would know that

  • Shut the fuck up.

  • I hate people like you, get lost go .... yourself

  • True!!

  • @Sjappelientje he's talking about aerobic exercise though.

  • Its true did some research on what you said - thanks a lot, going to start running... cheap and the best way...

  • cardio kickboxing is the thing....its awesome...

  • what about jump rope?

  • Yeah what about jump rope?

  • yes, it works the legs. but maybe you can look into doing variations on jump rope, such as different jumps. jump on one foot, or switch on which foot you jump with.

  • "Aerobics" are when you use the oxidative pathway of energetics. In otherwords, its when you burn oxygen as a source of fuel. He's right about basketball and football. First creatine phosphate will be used to power muscle contractions - then blood sugar - then oxygen. Creatine and blood sugar (glycogen) work extremely well and can replace themselves quick enough in a submaximal sport like basketball, that the athletes rarely are required to use oxygen to power muscle contractions.

  • Its possible to do aerobics with just one muscle - anytime you bench press or curl something 25 or 30 times till failure, that muscle is burning oxygen to keep working. It just doesn't create a massive oxygen debt which makes you breath heavy like running. Finally, aerobics are not really the best way to lose weight, since most of what's burned is blood sugar rather than fat. I would strongly recommend the run-walk method rather than pure cardio.

  • Considering anyone with an internet connection can post charts on the web, I'd be careful about what chart you put your trust in.

  • lol swimming isnt good? what? common. swimming uses lower legs and burns just as much as other "top burning cardio" does.

the problem for many is they dont have good enough technique to keep it up for 20 mins...

  • see comments above for why.

  • ive always used a cardio(jogging, skipping, rowing, biking etc.. as a big part of my workout.. i favour using the cross trainer vs the treadmill. is one better than the other? how would u rate the cross trainer.? also. it would be awsome if u posted a video based on stretching.. when 2.. how long.. etc.. thx.

  • One is not better than the other. See my comments at the top of the page that I'm about to type for an explanation.

  • Thanks

  • When I lost over 100 lbs the only exercise I ever did was the eliptical. But I did it alot.

  • I'm the type of person that eats to live... not lives to eat. I'm a fan of cardio. I run and I use the EFX at the gym. If I ate more would it really give me that much more energy? I would rather drink something to give me more energy. It's not that I feel that I'm lacking energy. Just always room for improvement. Any help from anyone would be appreciated.

  • It depends. I dont have enough information to tell you what you need from what you've said.

  • This means you DO NOT necessarily need something that requires your lower body! (though its still a logical idea.) In other words, if waving your arms around in circles is challenging enough to make you breath harder - to the point where you have difficulty getting enough air - then keep doing that for 20 minutes. According to the laws of adaptation, your aerobic capacity will increase.

  • Ok, now...

The ACTUAL "best", as far as aerobics go, and as far as the scientific laws governing human physiological adaptations, would be 'any repetitive activity or movement which lasts longer than 5 minutes and challenges the aerobic endurance threshold'.

  • testing to see if this thing posts without approval...

  • I walk 20 minutes to and from work each day, and I have very lean legs, but the paunch and love-handles remain. The next step is eating less.

  • hey scooby, i like your videos alot, they are very helpful, i just have a problem, after exercising for 2 weeks, my face is like getting all bony, kinda wrinkly and i could see my cheeks more, and my nose bigger, what do you recommend i should do?

  • What about EPOC and the fact that studies have shown that HIIT is more effective than steady state cardio for burning body fat? Take a look at boxers, wrestlers, and sprinters. All of those groups (except for perhaps the heavyweight boxers and wrestlers) are extremely lean. Have you ever tried those activities? I have and I can tell you that jogging isn't even in the same ball park as grappling/wrestling or boxing/kickboxing when it comes to burning calories.

  • Doesn't lose fat...builds the ass...stair stepper, that is...

  • How about the stair stepper?

  • great tips - running running running!

  • can some one aNCWER my question is volly ball good???

  • Sailor Moon, volley ball would be good if it was one on one or two on two where you are pretty much always moving, but when playing regular volleyball on a big team, you are mainly going to be standing around for longer periods time, so you won't get as much activity as some of the other activities, like running.

    Moon Prism POWER!!!! :)

  • lol tnx lol moon prism POWER!!!! lol

  • damn it man ! swimming is not good ?! wts wrong with u ?

swimming is the best sport ... u swin 4 an hour and u DO NOT have to worry about switting !! also, how come that swimming doesnt use the lower part of the body !

  • I do alot of reading myself on nutrion and what works and doesnt, but that was a very nice way how you explained the lower part of the body has to be involved to achieve maximum results.

  • need motivation losing weight work at fedex lol

  • keeping the snorkle out with the old lady burns alot of calories as well.

  • skipping is the bomb. You look cool doing it,too.

  • lol ur funny

  • Hey, I'd just like to add that you should try alternating from low to high intensity, every few minutes. This makes your heart rate change more often, burning a lot more calories.

  • Do you ever show a workout or just preach from a seated position?

  • Running, represent!

I have one more comment for those reading. The best aerobic exercise? The one you enjoy and will actually do.

Running is great and most people I know enjoy it once they push through that original hard starting up preiod--- but bicycling will be better if you are happily jumping on the bike for 1-3 hours a day and you can hardly convince yourself out for a run a few times a week.

  • Umm, this comment was from me. I didn't realize I was logged in under my friend's account from when he showed me something the other day.

  • I wish I had a vagina so I could have your children.

  • Have you ever heard of the Eye Toy Kinetic or DDR if so are those good Cardio workouts

  • Steve, I gotta tell ya, i'm learning alot of things from your videos. I always wondered why I didnt burn too much fat when I played football. Now I see that at practice, we would always take breaks, even it was was pretty intense.

I've started jogging about 20-25 min a day, and in 3 weeks I can already see the fat going. Thanks!

  • Glad to hear that.

  • Hi mate, thanks for the videos.

I'm wanting to know more about riding the bike. I have an exercise bike here at home, and was wondering what the best approach would be to utilising it to tackle weight loss...would I be better off riding at a consistant pace at a high resistance, or vary it up a little bit.

    Thanks again.

  • It doesn't really matter. Both will burn fat. I would do both just for variation. The most important thing is that you put the time in on the bike.

  • Great Advise!!!

I didnt know jogging had that much effect on weight lose cause usually a swim.

  • What about spinning??

  • Spinning is pretty good because it uses the legs. And the legs consume lots of calories for energy.

  • Were you ever fat?

Aerobics make me sweat and get my heart rate up 100X more than running/jogging/walking.

Walking and jogging would be for an off day when I need cardio but my muscles are sore.

Aerobics DVD's are usually more fast paced, and more often then not, they keep reminding you to keep your legs moving during the workout.

  • No, I have never been over weight. If aerobics works for you t hat's great. Keep up the good work.

  • what about super-circuit? i don't mean just stepping on the stairs. usually i use the bike, jumping squat thrusts, skipping, jumping jacks, stepping up onto a high bench, and doing different drilles with the step.

  • Not bad at all. As long as you can keep that pace up for 20-30 minutes. Usually, when something is too difficult people can't do it for a long enough period to be effective.

  • how about Rope Skipping? it uses the same muscles as jogging doesn't it? perhaps more safty for heavy weights like me?

  • uoops sorry, question has been already asked :(

  • Jumping rope is good but it doesn't burn the calories of jogging because there is not much movement of the upper legs & rear end. (But intensity is always a factor) Jumping rope is typically done on the toes while you rotate a rope w/your wrists at your side. Now it will get you out of breath but it still doesn't consume the calories of jogging. If you are over weight it will probably offer less chance of injury but I would still incorporate some walking & jogging into my weight loss program.

  • Absolutely! You don't see many over weight scullers.

  • Is rowing as good as many people make out? It encorporates the legs and upper body and can be sustained for quite long periods.

  • No wonder why people do treeking and mountaaineering are skinny

  • The eliptical is good but walking and jogging are still the best. You should also throw in some 40-50 yards sprints. There are great for your conditioning and most people don't relize they are anaerobic, so they will actually help build your legs.

  • Thanks. I know aerobics and Pilates instructors won't like it but it's the truth.

  • another great video

  • I heard skipping (you may know it as 'jumping rope') is really good. I figured it must be, what with boxers and children going for it great guns all the time. And they are LEAN. But then you didn't mention it and i felt sure you would. Reassure me, Steve. Am I being calorie and time-efficient by skipping?

  • It's a great way to supplement your cardio program but it's not the best. Why? Because there is very little movement of either the arms or legs. Boxers rotate their wrists while bouncing on their toes. But it can be done very fast which makes up for the lack of movement helping to increase the heart rate. Remember, boxers do a lot of road work in addition to tons of sparing . Two activities that also help keep them lean.

  • omg i freakin love your videos!! So much information i didn't know about!
