@WOWjman713 Cheren was a legitimate, calculating, stone-cold bad-ass. Barry was hard to beat, since he uses some of the strongest pokemon, even to the point where he uses two pokemon that are OU, unlike Gary who never even had a pokemon above UU. Besides, I never knew anyone who had trouble beating Gary, especially since he was the retarded child who lived down the block and his pokemon never had any coverage, so you could wall every single one of them.

@WOWjman713 Barry was just ADHD as all hell for most of the game. Gary stayed autistic throughout the ENTIRE game. And it's not just that, but when you're claiming to be the strongest, yet you use weak pokemon, you do not make for a good rival/champion (hence why I said Silver was bad). I'm just tired of everyone seeing Gary through rose-tinted glasses, because he wasn't 'the best'. He was decent- about as good as Barry- but he isn't all that people make him out to be.

Gary and Silver just have that attitude that makes you want to beat them and actually want to beat you....than afterwards the rivals became soft....just like the anime.

You can't really argue about Gary/Blue/Green though...he has a legacy and unlike the rest of the rivals his theme made you think "here comes trouble".

Silver and Blue were the best rivals. You actually wanted to FIGHT them when you saw them, because they intrigued you. With Blue, you just wanted to put that cocky guy in his place, while Silver was actually a VILLAN that actually would steal and abuse, and evenscare some kids. Those are real rivals. Gen 3 and Gen 4 weren't rivals at all, you could tell the company was trying to make everything "friendly" you didn't want to fight them. Gen 5 was O.K., but nothing comapared to G1 and G2.

Even Cheren who wants to be the champion doesn't act like a true douche rival the way Blue(USA)/Green(JP) or Silver did. If you combine Cheren's need to be the best with Bianca's lack of skill and goofiness you get Barry(Pearl) from D/P/Pt. N is really more of a rival in B/W. He mentally challenges your personal perception and physically challenges you after you're weak from previous battles.
