@husseindss It is not a rule to 15 or 18 it is when the girl reaches puberty that it becomes compulsory, a 13 year old can reach puberty and "womanhood" before an 18 year old in some cases, thus making her more developed physically at a younger age. Therefore you wear hijaab at the age of puberty. However you are correct in saying parents that have their daughters wear it earlier usually are because they want to train them or the kids even want to do it themselves :)

I'm Somali & I do not wear the hijab. I believe Somalis are losing our Nomaic cultures and we are trying to adopt Arab culture. Look what is happening in south Somalia. Al-shabab who is funded by rich Arabs are forcing women to wear burqas, replacing blue Somali flag with ugly black flag with arabic crap written on it and more. In North Somalia women have to dress like arabs. You do not see Oromos, Afars or other E.African Muslims adopting Arab ideology. This is foreign to our SOMALI culture.

@husseindss It is not a rule to 15 or 18 it is when the girl reaches puberty that it becomes compulsory, a 13 year old can reach puberty and "womanhood" before an 18 year old in some cases, thus making her more developed physically at a younger age. Therefore you wear hijaab at the age of puberty. However you are correct in saying parents that have their daughters wear it earlier usually are because they want to train them or the kids even want to do it themselves :)

I've seen many Somalis wearng hijab but also tight fitting clothes, to maximise their butt and breast, so why wear it? Is it a contradiction to dress like this? Because the community and peer presure forces to wear hijab but turns a blind eye girls and women show of their chest and thier butts. Men would rather look at a women's display of butt then to look at her hair! It seem as longs as you wear a hijab, you can show off your ass/boobs! what a stupid way of thinking. what about modesty?

I'm Somali & I do not wear the hijab. I believe Somalis are losing our Nomaic cultures and we are trying to adopt Arab culture. Look what is happening in south Somalia. Al-shabab who is funded by rich Arabs are forcing women to wear burqas, replacing blue Somali flag with ugly black flag with arabic crap written on it and more. In North Somalia women have to dress like arabs. You do not see Oromos, Afars or other E.African Muslims adopting Arab ideology. This is foreign to our SOMALI culture.

@somalification i think we have to remember that the hijab is not worn for culture it is worn because it is a part of the religion. Somali people are also Muslim and it is a part of Islam, for women to wear hijabs. I personally do not wear the hijab because i am trying to adopt Arab culture, i wear it because i am a Muslim woman. I am Somali and i am very proud of my culture and my religion.

Somalis are African and they need to follow their African culture and go back to their roots and not follow some ARAB ideology that was forced on them. @rascal874 There are two ayat of the Quran that deal with hijab. These are Surah an-Nur ayah 31 and Surah al-Ahzab ayah 59. how the Prophet (sAas) has explained them.
Surah an-Nur ayah 31 says: And say to the faithful women to lower their gazes, and to guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty except what is apparent of it, and to extend their headcoverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms (jaybs), and not to display their beauty except to their husbands,

I think that the Somali girls are very beaufiful and I think they should always wear the hijab with pride because it shows that they respect themselves and they respect God. American women have lowered their standard. I am glad that Somali people are here in the U.S. Maybe their high standards will rub off on us. I have high respect for these people.
