  • but in the end, it's all up to the county BOS, and the department heads to decide what's going to happen in the end. i just think rescue stuff should be done by guys who are performing all kinds of rescues on a regular basis. It's just not a law enforcement roll in my opinion. which means squat.

and by the way, i grew up at the airport since my dad was is a pilot (and i solo'd when i was 17) and i too have met the sheriff's pilot's and crew, and they are nice guys.

  • I've seen deputies pull-off some pretty daring rescues. They don't have the tools for technical rescues like extracting car accident victims, but who does the rescues during hostage situations or suicidal people? It seems to me, since the sheriff, handles SAR, it's appropraite for them to have a hoist equiped helo. I'm not saying fire shouldn't do hoist rescues, but to me, the SO is catching a lot of flak over having a tool they should have had all along.

  • @icu81again i missed your comment about officers saving people form hostage situations and i agree and think they do a great job. But it's not really the same kind of rescue.

    Just my opinion....

  • @icu81again I will just say this to them having the tool they should have had all along. to my knowledge, they have had two OH-58s for a long time, as well as two Hughes 500s (for a really long time). If they needed the Huey so badly, they should have gotten it way before 2000, when 408 was completed. actually like 2002...when it became a hoist-ship.....

  • @joeshmoe12301230 we were on the govt. list to receive a Huey years ago, before fire received 408. I can't say for certain, but apparently the list was purged periodically and no one from the SO followed-up or made sure we remained on the list. 9/11 came along and the military retained and refurbished those helos destined for the govt. excess system. So, in retrospect, someone at the SO dropped the ball. Youngblood became sheriff, requested the funds and it was granted by the BOS.

  • @chellej911 SO should have tried to get one of FDs ships years ago. there were 3-4 hueys (205s) and 1-2 cobras sitting in delano for YEARS! 408 was finished being refurbed and upgraded in Aug 2000.

Hell, FD traded one of the helicopters to Santa Barbara (i think) for parts. Masts, tannys, gearboxes or something.

SO should have had a hoist helicopter built before FD could get around to it. 408 was done, so they just kept taking it to another level. so now SO needed one too? just my Q.

  • @joeshmoe12301230 I agree, the SO should have had one years ago and Youtube isn't the place to resolve differences.

  • @chellej911 Has the SO hired another mechanic yet, or is Adam still the heart and sole of all those ships? If not, they should sell some choppers just to make his life a little easier. That guy works his butt off.....

  • @joeshmoe12301230 Adam is the supervising mech. We have two additional mechs hired about four years ago. We're lucky to them, especially Adam.

  • @chellej911 wow, time flies. im glad they got some more help there. Adam is a great dude. I need to swing by and say hi.

  • @joeshmoe12301230 stop by. He comes in at 0600 and is gone at 1500.

  • @joeshmoe12301230 as I said before, I won't debate who should or shouldn't. If you're a member of the KCFD and a fan of fire's air ops, I couldn't convince you the SO should be the sole hoist helicopter. If you were a member of the SO, and a fan of their air unit, you couldn't be convinced fire should be the sole source. We have to agree to disagree, do our jobs and not demean the other dept. Apparently, some members of fire doesn't feel the same and that's sad.

  • @chellej911 agreed. it's not like anything important will ever be solved in the comments section of youtube......hahaha

  • @chellej911 oh, and FYI. when i write things like "YEARS!", im not yelling. im just trying to emphasis that it had been many years, like 15 or more, before Air 5 was purchased.

  • i removed my comments toward chelle since you think i was name calling. but it's obvious that he is bias because he works for KCSO. just look at his comments on KCSO Air 5.

"WHOOO HOOOO, THE GREEN HELICOPTER IS NOT GOING ANY WHERE!" says it all.

  • You didn't have to remove the comment for my sake. I got to meet most of the guys in the sheriff's air unit and they're a bunch of pretty cool guys. They're not doing this because they think it's cool. They do it because, well... that's their job. They also know they're new to hoists and are not perfect. They seem to be pretty humble. I guarantee Kevin L. had some rescues that didn't look just right either in the begining . He'll probably deny it though knowing him...LOL !!

  • @icu81again well, in hind site i dont want to be one of those guys who talks crap on the internet.

but i just seems to be a waste of Kern county money to duplicate efforts. They bought a helicopter out right that cost way more money than what it cost to build 408. And i know it was years later and the prices of aircraft had gone up, but kern county fire built a second helicopter that still cost way way less than air 5....

  • @icu81again and the other difference (besides being a multi-roll helicopter that has a crew that are EMTs and can transport a rescued patient directly to the hospital if necessary, and can do waterdrops) between the sheriff and fire helicopters is that the fire helicopters go out of county on fire assignments and actually create revenue when they do. Other counties pay big bucks for helicopters when they order them for fires....

that's why the BOS approved fire's second helicopter.....

  • @joeshmoe12301230 Ok, there's a reason I was being a jerk and so, to be a stand-up kind of guy, I removed my comment from this video. Likewise, I wonder if "mickdad" and "thetruth" have the guts to remove theirs which started this whole thing. I know who they are, so they can't hide behind their silly screen names. My question to you joeshmoe: looking at the river rescue video, do you think they were right and justified posting their silly comments?

  • @chellej911 Oh, I understand how people can get you to comment on things that you normally wouldn't comment on. I did it with this video. I didn't see the "mickdad and thetruth", and i dont know who they are. But no, they probably weren't right in making their comments. Most internet arguments aren't justified. That's why I "TRY" to not do it.

But like i said before, it's pointless to argue about it. I'm just a pee-on with no weight...

  • @joeshmoe12301230 are you a member of the KCFD?

  • and why spend my tax money on a sheriff helicopter for these rescues when the county already had a helicopter that was up and running, already doing hoist rescues?

and they bought the helicopter for about twice what H-408 cost to build. what's up with that? And the fire helicopter also cover's water dropping rolls too.

  • @chellej911 what you don't understand is that there was heavy rain in the areas above which means that there was great potential for a lot more flooding which is a reason for a rescue.

AND, even if the house is never in any structural danger (which it was) how long do you find it appropriate to leave an infant out in the elements to become hypothermic?

  • @chellej911 Another thing. A lot of hazardous situations are underestimated.

People get hurt or killed in situations that seem benign, then conditions deteriorate rapidly and unexpectedly. This is one of those cases where things could have gotten really bad, really quick.

If the father did actually say that they weren't in any real danger and they didn't need to be hoisted, then why did they climb onto their roof instead of walking or driving to a safer place?

  • @chellej911 AND! NOBODY hands over their infant child that quickly to a guy that's going to be hanging from a wire under a helicopter if they aren't in any danger. I know I wouldn't.

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I understand the dangers fireman deal with. Do you know the dangers cops deal with? No? Me neither, so don't act like a man-child and assume one is more dangerous than the other. Name calling doesn't help your argument either.

  • @icu81again i didnt say that one job was more dangerous than the other. i just stated that law enforcement does not deal with rescue situations. they are trained in dealing with criminal situations and.......enforcing the law. When there is an accident or situation in which someone needs to be rescued, who is called out to perform the rescue? Fire personnel.

It seems to me that LE just wants this particular roll because its cool.

  • Let me get this straight, you're saying the KCFD's helicopters are constantly staffed? The crew goes off-duty in the early evening as does the KCSO's helicopter crew. After hours fire's crew has to drive to Keen to get their helicopter. The sheriff's crew drives to their headquarters to get their bird which, btw, is a hoist helo. A 30 to 40 minute drive to Keen compared to a 10 minute, or less, drive to the sheriff's HQ. Well, it doesn't take a genuis to figure this one out. Keep trying Josh.
