my 1984 1.5L Honda crx, kick all yall ass on the gas mileage, Hybrid my ass, just as well go all electric, anything in between are just gimmick to rip you off.
I agree that your dealer handled the situation very poorly, and I would probably never buy a Toyota again either. It is important, however, to express that this was the experience at ONE dealership. I would definitely not recommend that particular dealership, but I don't think it's fair to tell people not to buy this car. You said yourself that the rental you drove gave you a good impression.
p.s. No Accord gets greater than 36mpg "most of the time" unless your wife has an Accord hybrid.
I do think it's good to make sure people know the bad stories too, though, so I'm still glad you posted this. And on the other side, I've heard a story of a TCH going over 400,000 miles with only regular maintenance (i.e. fluid changes, break changes, etc.)
I have a 2007 Camry Hybrid with about 35,000km and do not have any problem so far. My tank average in Summer is 5.0L/100km 920km and 6.8L/100km 660km in Winter. But I believe a Taxi driver can beat this record easily.
i have to say you just got a bad car, toyota camry has been a great car for years. not everything is successful the first go around. this car sounds like a lemon. no big deal people, a man has right to voice his opponion
oh well you might as well go ahead and change them now. so they get their cars inspected and repair things b4 they break. any car would have a great reputation for reliability if the dealers could do that.
Also your driving must suck, in the summer I average 5.9 L/100KM, in the winter though it gets a lot worse, between 7 and 8.5 L/100KM. And I'm not one of those people who feather the throttle either just to keep the engine from coming on when pulling away. I have a lead foot and floor most of the time and I STILL get better mileage than you. I think there was something wrong with that car.
I was willing to accept it could be me, though I used the features of the car to improve my driving (I'm not a lead foot.). My wife got the same mileage when she drove it for a week, to which I compared to her Accord. Additionally, I've been in touch with the new owner (left my contact info in the manual), and he has seen the same mileage, including winter drop. Though no other significant issues since. Service was not interested in finding out what was wrong with that car, forcing my hand.
I own an 2009 Camry Hybrid purchased new. It now has 112,000 KM on it and have not had a single issue.
The engine brake thing though, the lights don't come on because the car does not decelerate quick enough to warrant them, and people should not be driving so close as to hit you with it engaged.
And a lemon? Really? "force manufacturers to repair or replace chronically defective automobiles". The Camry Hybrid is not "chronically defective"
@AluminumHaste - a lemon does not mean that all Camrys are junk. My father-in-law has a v6 camry, and he hasn't had any troubles at all. Whever the reason, I had lots of trouble with that one, and that car was a lemon to me. My biggest issue was the run-around from service.
And when I decelerated in that situation, I was thrown forward with enough force to lock my seatbelt. That's a fast enough deceleration to get you rear-ended if you've got someone relatively close behind.
i see the intake for the battery behind your head when you are in the back seat,it's a hybrid, but it does have differant rear lights,i have an '08 and really love it ,not one problem,i get about 35 mpg per tankfull,no lower, pretty good for that size car. i love everything about it and would buy another in a minute-sorry about your problems--even rolls royces have problems at times
thats about how many problems i had with my 03 sentra they wanted 1,000$ because the heat didn't work , we tried EVERYTHING and the 1,000$ was for taking out the engine to take a look!
I never liked Toyotas because I think they're fooling people and nobody believes me. They say ''You like BMWs and that's why''. All that quality and efficiency they talk about is rubbish. Quality, we can saw it in your experience. On efficiency, they say ''we make a V6 that consumes like a 4 cyl'. They don't tell you that it performs like a 4 cyl' as well. It's just called as a V6. I'm not going to say Toyota is actively deceiving people. That said, I had the chance to talk to the guy who bought my car used. First, the dealer lied to him about why I got rid of the car, and invented a story of how I came back to Toyota in the end. After purchase, they told him they would not give the car's history w/o my signature, and they wouldn't tell them my name. And, in the winter, this car still gets worse gas milege than my father-in-law's V6 Camry. It still leaves a foul taste.

Sorry about your experience. I agree its a lemon, and it was used. I have a 00 camry, and its great, my dad had had two, and one of them I was in a wreck with, and didnt have a scratch on me.
I'm sorry you've had such a negative experience with your Camry Hybrid.I've had the opposite experience.I've had no problems at all.Insofar as gas economy I've had the car about a year (since sept 2008) and my winter gas economy has been about 7.2 L/100km where as my summer has been 5.5 L/100km. Pretty good since I live in BC's Kootenays and deal with very high mountain passes and winter temps. Mind you our winters are -10C and not -40C. I'd buy another one problem. Best car I've owned.
Thank you so much for your review. I was just inquiring about the Toyota Camry Hybrid when I decided to check YouTube. It is really too bad that Toyota did not stand behind their product. They have lost not only your business, but mine as well.
I decided to go with a Honda Ridgeline. I've had it for 9800 km so far, and I'm quite pleased with it. I do miss the push button start, and the bluetooth, but I got a Parrot to cover that. Because it's a truck, there is obviously not much else to compare.
Wow, totally freaking me out. I just bought a 2009 Camry Hybrid yesterday and I have to wait six weeks for delivery! I am going to call my dealer tomorrow to ask about the problems you had. But it sounds like you got a lemon, I've heard very little negative comments about the Camry Hybrid, hopefully it was an isolated case.
I wonder if it had happened to you, you wouldn't have been out of your witt. The author of this review has provided me with a great service. I was about to purchase one, but given that it is a new technology, I did not quite trusted it yet. That Toyota and their dealers totally screwed this guy up is nothing short of ludicrous. Funny how the dealer itself could not find what was wrong with it. Where else could he take it? Had I been this guy, I would have shoved this car up Toyota's a**.
I'm sorry but I had to disagree. They finally did find out what's wrong with it (fuel pump according to the author) and they fixed it. Then the author went to say it didn't feel right, didn't get the fuel economy as he expected, etc., and that people should think twice buying a TCH because every buyer of TCH will be buying a junk vehicle, etc. I did not hear the author expressing any further problems after the fuel pump fix, other than "not feeling right".
I have a 2007 TCH. The car's winter mileage does increase, but if you know why you can reduce that difference. The reason is the HVAC - the engine has to run full blast in order to heat up the coolant to deliver the heat. What I have done is: 1) turn the heat off for the first few minutes in the morning, 2) turn the heat off when stopping at red lights until the engine is warmed up, 3) always use ECO mode. I can still do about 7.x (or even below 7.0) L/100km in winter.
I knew about that stuff. In an attempt to increase milege, I would drive with the heat off completely. Which is great when it's -30C. Even then, the electrics almost never engaged when it was below 0. My father in law's V8 gets consistent 8L/100km... never, ever, over 10L/100 km like I was getting unless he drives like a maniac. However, I am open to the idea that there was something else wrong... but I wasn't going to fight with Toyota, who made it clear it wasn't a "problem".
Well I beg to differ. The car was sitting outside overnight; with the heat off, the vehicle had no problems going into "E Mode" after maximum 5 minutes of driving. And this past winter in Toronto has been quite old comapred to the average.
Ah, but that's your car. What I'm suggesting is that there was a discrete mechanical problem that was undiagnosed. From my prior experience, and the fact that I was expressly told nothing was wrong, there was no ready way for me to get it fixed. If they were willing to look, found something, fixed it, and I experienced what you describe, I'd be driving it now.
Love my 2008 Camry Hybrid. No problems. It's a great car. And, yes, there are cheaper options to get the same fuel economy. Those options, however, don't offer the SmartKey, sunroof, leather, NAV, JBL, etc., which I wanted. It's a great car at an affordable price. However, you need to do your research and understand how the car works and know what to expect in various situations.
I didn't have the leather/nav version. However, I miss the smartkey every day. I had rented the car before I bought, and that's why I bought it. Had I had the same/simlar experiences as I had with the rental, I'd still be driving it. Remember - I was open to an exchange, given it could be a lemon, but Toyota made it very clear that "they didn't do that". Which, in the end, is why I ditched the car, even if the TCH as a whole, is a good car.
my family bought our toyota camry hybrid in november 06, and its been a really good car.
for being as heavy as it is the gas mileage is realy good... 5.5-6L/100km, but it takes skill to do that i personally have never seen the tank avg over 7L.. and as for issues, there are none except for the one time it got towed and messed the vcs system up.. but then it got
fixed right away.. i didnt make a vid about it tho
you should sue Toyota Canada, after all the warranty should cover just about anything within the least of 60 or 90 days. demos usually dont even have any big problems but after three days i would seriously sue them.
Hybrid version of such a large and heavy car like a camry is a bad choice. Better to get a corolla or civic with manual transmission, this will result real fuel economy. Hybrid technology is best for city stop and go driving in a light weight car. For long distance highway driving I don't think a hybrid will have any advantage, just disadvantage due to complexity. I suggest the the honda accord diesel coming next year to the states, can run biodiesel. European diesel accord gets over 60 mpg.
Sorry to hear your tale. I have a 07 TCH that I purchased in August 2006. It is probably the best car i have ever owned. I did experience the decline in gas mileage the first winter, but since replacing the tires in Nov 07, the mileage this winter was better - about 32 mph avg. In the summer I can get as high as 42 mph even with highway driving. My biggest complaint was the tires wearing out early. Sounds like you got a lemon.
I had comparable problems with my Dakota...apparently the criteria that have to be achieved before the car companies perform a recall means they often have known issues and can avoid paying for them.
Odds are the mech won't even look for known issues, and potential recalls, with the car they're working on.
I'm beginning to froth at the mouth. This was a major frustration to me. I had to tell them. I'd hoped to avoid it by buying a Toyota next time and you've shattered that dream.
Yeah...you expect better when you buy a brand-new vehicle. I had similar experiences to yours...where I had an intermittent problem that they assured me I wasn't having (total loss of power). Do they think that new car smell makes us hallucinate?
They must, or they think that we'll just walk away stupid and happy. They just didn't want to shell out the $2K repair for the fuel pump, and I still think it should be a recall...
LOL! Your car issues aren't good...but if I begin ranting about my new Dodge Dakota, including known-issues they avoided fixing, we'll both need a new vehicle...and several drinks.
wow!!!you get 36mpg...I know its cold and all and I live in Alberta so I know...My 1995 Camry V6 LE gets between 16-20mpg in the winter and 22mpg in the summer
The gas milege wasn't horrific - but for $10K less, I could have just bought an Accord, and got ~1mpg summer and ~4mpg winter better than this. In hindsight, that's exactly what I should have done.
You need Global Warming in your city & melt all those ice so you can stop complaining. Your expectations are too high. Just move to California. You're probably 1% of those who got a lemon car from a bad dealership. I've had my Camry Hybrid for over a year, without any problems. I've had Toyotas since 1976.
Get out of that depressing town; snow & bad dealerships will shorten your car's battery life & your own life too.
I don't deny that it was probably a one-off problem. If I lived in California, I'd still have the car. It came down to the local dealership - I wasn't about to drive 250km or more just to have the thing serviced.
22MPG in winter is pretty good. As temps drop, battery output drops too, therefore causing the gas engine to run more. Also, most people let a car idle to warm up and de-ice windows. I'm glad you seem to have gotten most of the problems solved. Hopefully, the time it has been out has brought issues to the surface to be dealt with as I am looking into the hybrid camry but will seriously doing my homework.
I would disagree that 22MPG is good in the winter. Like I say in the video, a 10-15% drop is acceptable for all those reasons you mention, but not a 50% drop. My father-in-law's V6 camry gets better gas milege in the winter...
I can only surmise that the V-6 may do better between the two cars do to the V-6 not having to work as hard to pull through snow and slush. Was the 22mpg city or highway? I have a Crown Vic, super car and built like a tank. If I REALLY baby it I can get 18mpg winter city and about 22mpg highway...Summertime I can get about 20mpg city and 29mpg highway with cruise on at 55mph.
90% of the time, the roads are comparable to summer, i.e. cleared completely of snow. What proved it for me was a week in January, where the temperature went above 0C for about a week, there was no precip, the roads were the same. The day the temperature dropped below freezing, the milege tanked.
dude just trade it in lol. no need to spend all your time making a video how you dislike it. have over 17k miles on my camry hybrid and absoulutely no problems. i love that car!
I wasn't saying that every car is bad. I was telling my experience, and I was 1000X more disappointed in the service, not the car. My appointment to trade it in was the next day! I've had my ridgeline for 2 months, and I'm thrilled with it.
I was originally going to go either way, but decided on the Camry due to the "green" thing, and because my wife wanted me to get that one. Yes, indeed, the ridgeline consumes way more gas, but then I was expecting that.
I didn't get an accord because they were so expensive relatively. And it seemed kind of counter-intuitive to get a V6 with Hybrid. In any case, I have a ridgeline. Going through gas like no tomorrow, but I expected that. I'm happy with it.
There wasn't really any buyer's remorse. If I felt I could trust the car, I would have kept it. For me, it was the fact that Toyota really had no idea what/how caused the sudden deceleration, and they couldn't tell me for sure that the fuel pump was the cause. If I had to travel, I rented. The kicker was that Honda had exceptional lease financing, which made it feasible. Also, I can write off the difference against the business.
How do you mean? For the gas milege? As I said in the video, I tried really hard to keep it down - after I first got it, I improved my gas milege by 10% by driving style. And I'm not hard on the accelerator/brakes to begin with. Simply things like where to accelerate going up a hill, coast more before braking on a turn, that kind of thing.
thanks for this video. I am a university student living away from home and i was thinking about either getting the camry hybrid, because it saves gas, or an altima coupe, since i drive on the highway alot and that im still in my teen years.
I have a camry hybrid and bought it March 07 and had no problems. I get 44-46mpg in summer and lower mostly 30's in the winter. Can you give more info on the fuel pump? I need to ask about mine. thanks.
bear; The fuel pump is a range of VIN numbers, so if your car was built in a certain time frame (I don't know what that is), it would have the defective fuel pump. You'd have to ask your dealer.
I test drove a camry hybrid in the states around the same time you bought yours. I really didn't like those clunking noises you mentioned either just from test driving one, so I bought a prius instead. So far, I've had no problems in 15,000 miles of driving. Except that someone hit it after owning it for 6 months. Glad I didn't get the camry. Sorry to hear about yours.
I got myself a Honda Ridgeline, which is what I wanted to buy originally. I'm much happier with it. No engine failures three days out. :D One thing I forgot to mention in the video - if you're dead set on a Camry, just get the V6 version. Better overall gas milege (winter/summer), and seems to be less problematic. my father-in-law has one, and it seems to be just fine.
Damn, sorry to hear of your crappy experience with the Toyota. The new Tundra is ironically having MORE problems then the new Chevrolet Silverado. Good luck with your new car.
2007-09 model had issues. And there were global recalls. Im still getting a 2010/2011 model

What I have done is: 1) turn the heat off for the first few minutes in the morning, 2) turn the heat off when stopping at red lights until the engine is warmed up, 3) always use ECO mode. I can still do about 7.x (or even below 7.0) L/100km in winter.
rgl168 3 years ago
I knew about that stuff. In an attempt to increase milege, I would drive with the heat off completely. Which is great when it's -30C. Even then, the electrics almost never engaged when it was below 0. My father in law's V8 gets consistent 8L/100km... never, ever, over 10L/100 km like I was getting unless he drives like a maniac. However, I am open to the idea that there was something else wrong... but I wasn't going to fight with Toyota, who made it clear it wasn't a "problem".
maficstudios 3 years ago

Law4JWL 3 years ago
I didn't have the leather/nav version. However, I miss the smartkey every day. I had rented the car before I bought, and that's why I bought it. Had I had the same/simlar experiences as I had with the rental, I'd still be driving it. Remember - I was open to an exchange, given it could be a lemon, but Toyota made it very clear that "they didn't do that". Which, in the end, is why I ditched the car, even if the TCH as a whole, is a good car.

my family bought our toyota camry hybrid in november 06, and its been a really good car.
for being as heavy as it is the gas mileage is realy good... 5.5-6L/100km, but it takes skill to do that i personally have never seen the tank avg over 7L.. and as for issues, there are none except for the one time it got towed and messed the vcs system up.. but then it got
fixed right away.. i didnt make a vid about it tho

u got a lemon car

I've had two other demos, they were both fine. The fuel pump issue had nothing to do with the fact that it was a demo.
maficstudios 3 years ago
you should sue Toyota Canada, after all the warranty should cover just about anything within the least of 60 or 90 days. demos usually dont even have any big problems but after three days i would seriously sue them.

@kevikocean Best response so far. Informed, concise and clear.

I'd hoped to avoid it by buying a Toyota next time and you've shattered that dream.
abluhowy 3 years ago
Yeah...you expect better when you buy a brand-new vehicle. I had similar experiences to yours...where I had an intermittent problem that they assured me I wasn't having (total loss of power). Do they think that new car smell makes us hallucinate?
abluhowy 3 years ago
They must, or they think that we'll just walk away stupid and happy. They just didn't want to shell out the $2K repair for the fuel pump, and I still think it should be a recall...
maficstudios 3 years ago
LOL! Your car issues aren't good...but if I begin ranting about my new Dodge Dakota, including known-issues they avoided fixing, we'll both need a new vehicle...and several drinks.
abluhowy 3 years ago
hehe... Like someone else said, though, every make has its bad ones. Though I think I know of fewer with good Dodge. ;)
maficstudios 3 years ago
wow!!!you get 36mpg...I know its cold and all and I live in Alberta so I know...My 1995 Camry V6 LE gets between 16-20mpg in the winter and 22mpg in the summer
NotoriousRacer 3 years ago
The gas milege wasn't horrific - but for $10K less, I could have just bought an Accord, and got ~1mpg summer and ~4mpg winter better than this. In hindsight, that's exactly what I should have done.
maficstudios 3 years ago
You need Global Warming in your city & melt all those ice so you can stop complaining. Your expectations are too high. Just move to California. You're probably 1% of those who got a lemon car from a bad dealership. I've had my Camry Hybrid for over a year, without any problems. I've had Toyotas since 1976.
Get out of that depressing town; snow & bad dealerships will shorten your car's battery life & your own life too.
Marist83USA 3 years ago
I don't deny that it was probably a one-off problem. If I lived in California, I'd still have the car. It came down to the local dealership - I wasn't about to drive 250km or more just to have the thing serviced.
maficstudios 3 years ago
22MPG in winter is pretty good. As temps drop, battery output drops too, therefore causing the gas engine to run more. Also, most people let a car idle to warm up and de-ice windows. I'm glad you seem to have gotten most of the problems solved. Hopefully, the time it has been out has brought issues to the surface to be dealt with as I am looking into the hybrid camry but will seriously doing my homework.
sorryociffer 3 years ago
I would disagree that 22MPG is good in the winter. Like I say in the video, a 10-15% drop is acceptable for all those reasons you mention, but not a 50% drop. My father-in-law's V6 camry gets better gas milege in the winter...
maficstudios 3 years ago
I can only surmise that the V-6 may do better between the two cars do to the V-6 not having to work as hard to pull through snow and slush. Was the 22mpg city or highway? I have a Crown Vic, super car and built like a tank. If I REALLY baby it I can get 18mpg winter city and about 22mpg highway...Summertime I can get about 20mpg city and 29mpg highway with cruise on at 55mph.
sorryociffer 3 years ago
90% of the time, the roads are comparable to summer, i.e. cleared completely of snow. What proved it for me was a week in January, where the temperature went above 0C for about a week, there was no precip, the roads were the same. The day the temperature dropped below freezing, the milege tanked.
maficstudios 3 years ago
dude just trade it in lol. no need to spend all your time making a video how you dislike it. have over 17k miles on my camry hybrid and absoulutely no problems. i love that car!
hazardos13 4 years ago
I wasn't saying that every car is bad. I was telling my experience, and I was 1000X more disappointed in the service, not the car. My appointment to trade it in was the next day! I've had my ridgeline for 2 months, and I'm thrilled with it.
maficstudios 4 years ago
Why would you go from a Camry to a Ridgeline? They aren't even the same class of vehicle - your fuel consumption would dramatically increase?
alapies 3 years ago
I was originally going to go either way, but decided on the Camry due to the "green" thing, and because my wife wanted me to get that one. Yes, indeed, the ridgeline consumes way more gas, but then I was expecting that.
maficstudios 3 years ago
trade it in for a accord hybrid it will make you much happier.. hell the regular one would be better
moscowremix 4 years ago
I didn't get an accord because they were so expensive relatively. And it seemed kind of counter-intuitive to get a V6 with Hybrid. In any case, I have a ridgeline. Going through gas like no tomorrow, but I expected that. I'm happy with it.
maficstudios 4 years ago
So was the Camry situation a mix of buyers remorse mixed with poor customer service?
alapies 3 years ago
There wasn't really any buyer's remorse. If I felt I could trust the car, I would have kept it. For me, it was the fact that Toyota really had no idea what/how caused the sudden deceleration, and they couldn't tell me for sure that the fuel pump was the cause. If I had to travel, I rented. The kicker was that Honda had exceptional lease financing, which made it feasible. Also, I can write off the difference against the business.
maficstudios 3 years ago
Well, it depends on how the car is treated.
RyoKun91 4 years ago
How do you mean? For the gas milege? As I said in the video, I tried really hard to keep it down - after I first got it, I improved my gas milege by 10% by driving style. And I'm not hard on the accelerator/brakes to begin with. Simply things like where to accelerate going up a hill, coast more before braking on a turn, that kind of thing.
maficstudios 4 years ago
thanks for this video. I am a university student living away from home and i was thinking about either getting the camry hybrid, because it saves gas, or an altima coupe, since i drive on the highway alot and that im still in my teen years.
mynocturnal 4 years ago
I have a camry hybrid and bought it March 07 and had no problems. I get 44-46mpg in summer and lower mostly 30's in the winter. Can you give more info on the fuel pump? I need to ask about mine. thanks.
RC
bear4musclebear 4 years ago
bear; The fuel pump is a range of VIN numbers, so if your car was built in a certain time frame (I don't know what that is), it would have the defective fuel pump. You'd have to ask your dealer.
maficstudios 4 years ago
Bad experience can even happen to a Toyota.
In my family more than 10 people drive different Toyota's.
A lot of people from my work do also.
Nobody has any problem even one broken light.
If you buy a German, French or Italian car that's a different thing, those are really unreliable.
I hope you have more luck with your Honda though!
boybreda 4 years ago
I test drove a camry hybrid in the states around the same time you bought yours. I really didn't like those clunking noises you mentioned either just from test driving one, so I bought a prius instead. So far, I've had no problems in 15,000 miles of driving. Except that someone hit it after owning it for 6 months. Glad I didn't get the camry. Sorry to hear about yours.
Steve2780 4 years ago
I got myself a Honda Ridgeline, which is what I wanted to buy originally. I'm much happier with it. No engine failures three days out. :D One thing I forgot to mention in the video - if you're dead set on a Camry, just get the V6 version. Better overall gas milege (winter/summer), and seems to be less problematic. my father-in-law has one, and it seems to be just fine.
maficstudios 4 years ago
Damn, sorry to hear of your crappy experience with the Toyota. The new Tundra is ironically having MORE problems then the new Chevrolet Silverado. Good luck with your new car.
