@stevenscottoddballz Changing the tube will usually stimulate coughing. The coughing is a automatic response to a foreign object in the airway (the tube).

Gloves are not necessary in home? care. Of course, you can use them if you like, but they are expensive and often not covered by insurance. Good hand washing is acceptable at home (but not in hospitals).

He had a tracheostomy, because his upper airway was too narrow for him to breathe. Without the hole he could not breathe. His airway was repaired in 1997 and he no longer has a hole in his neck:-)

My sister was born a few days after this video was made on November 25th 1994, so if my sister is now a teenager of 14 this child was a bit older then her so would be around about 15 or 16.

They'll probably bully you for it and they might say things cause you smoke too much or on drugs. Others might not take you on for a Job cause of it and they might believe it's shouting when not. Informing you what we do go through in our daily lifes. PS For those that don't know some people with a TRACHEOTOMY - husky voice have to speak up cause they can't be heard by adults without a TRACHEOTOMY - husky voice. It's not shouting. I speak from personal experience.

Might get treated as a adult when your a kid and teenager with a husky voice cause it makes you sound like adult when your that young. Also they might call you a phsychopath and treat you like a retard for it if they do it's abuse cause they don't understand even though you've told them why you talk like that. You'll get a lot of mucas streaming colds more than those without a Tracheotomy - husky voice. Yes you can smoke though it's at your own risk to with a husky voice. I don't smoke.

Many people have said some nasty things about TRACHEOTOMY people on You Tube two people did I bet they don't know what a TRACHEOTOMY is. I know. It's a surgical operation performed on the neck to allow the paitent to breathe. I've got a TRACHEOTOMY too and we have a terrible life with it cause it stops you able to sing clearly breathe properly talk properly communicate with those that talk clearly that can't understand you mucas and bullying from others. Machines on Telephones misunderstand.

Aw. Aaron was so cute as a baby in this video. I was reading the comments, and I am happy to know that he is free from the trach tube and all the other pieces of medical equipment. I hope the future will continue to look bright for him as he becomes an adult.

Mostly for cleanliness. They get yucky after a few weeks. Most doctors recommend changing the tube every 1-2 weeks.

This is an old video. Aaron is now 14 years old and no longer has a tracheostomy. But yes, when he was young, he was on O2 and had a pulse oximeter and apnea monitor.

Wow, he's very quiet for his. My sister used to cough whenever we did it. She was calm for the last two years of having one and she had even gotten to the point where she would ask to have it changed but she still coughed.

Glad you found the video helpful. Keep in mind that this would be a sterile technique in a hospital setting, but typically just a "clean" technique in home care.

tracheostomy is emergency method to bypass upper airway but the problem is that you may die if the water level reashed your neck during swimming!!!!

The need for a tracheostomy is not always an emergency. Some people need trachs sleep apnea, excess secretions, vocal cord problems, to name a few. However, you are correct regarding swimming. People with tracheostomies should not swim. This is because the trach bi-passes the upper airways, so there is no gag reflex to prevent aspiration.

Yes, you would have to wear the tube, but some people can cap the tube when not needed. If you need it for swallowing, you are probably aspirating some of your food into your lungs. You should make a list of all of your questions and go over them with your doctor.

There are several reasons for tracheostomy tubes, but the most common are for upper airway obstruction or ventilator support.
