@Karapar12 No, they feed on the monster's flesh; that's what makes them parasites. That's how they get into the city in the first place. The monster rubs up against a building at one point to scrape some of them off.

I loved this scene. Cloverfield is one of my favorite movies...I'm never watching it with my mother again though... Everytime time there was a scene change or a suspenseful moment, she would ask me when a scary part was going to be on so she could cover her eyes and plug her ears. Her screams where quite entertaining once I stopped warning her, though. xD

Wow. I was so psyched out by the suspense leading up to this scene that I was too busy flinching away from the screen every time one of the parasites jumped out to even tell what the hell was going on. I even thought it was just one big parasite that was attacking them and they were all so panicked (like I was) that it took the whole 60 seconds to shake the thing off of them and get away from it. >_< I'm not a big horror movie watcher if you couldn't tell.

@Rosebunse Dude, the Clover didin't come from outer space.. It was a baby in hybernation in the ocean. Those are parasites tha were feeding on them, the Slusho! company used the parasites venom to flavor their drinks. Slusho was using the Cloverfield monster :o
