Very interesting post, cool stuff. Jimmy totally smokes, I could listen to him play Steve Morse music all day. Let's not lose sight of the fact that he is playing a Morse song, on a guitar clearly inspired by Steve's early Tele, and even seems to be doing the Morse trick of bringing the delay in with a volume pedal. Awesome player and performance, but he's immitating. Steve was the creative force behind this .
the best cover of this I've heard / on Youtube - and to think at the time it was new, in another words - Jimmy Herring learned it note for note very rapidly. Damn, i'm still working on "Pipe" - not an easy task!
All he needs to do is shave and put on a sleevless shirt and he'd almost be Morse. I wonder if he can fly a plane and play Purple tunes. He's got the chops down, nice work.
I was at this show (I went to GIT 84-85) and I remember being blown away by Herring...but I admit I thought he was a bit TOO much a clone of Morse (the world only needs one, haha). Pretty cool at that time: I'd hear Paul Gilbert shredding in the basement every morning; Frank Gambale was on staff and you could go hang out and he'd hand out hand-written theory charts and talk about his audition with Chick Corea; you'd see an "unknown" like Tony Macalpine do a show in the afternoon....
I knew Jimmy sounded like Morse was a big influence early on, but this guy learned Steve's catalogue! I guess if Steve ever got sick, he just called Jimmy to cover the gig...haha
Well, I don't know about that. Steve is an amazing guitarist and composer. That being said, I have heard live versions of Steve playing that song that didn't sound as good as Jimmy. Jimmy had most of the album "The Introduction" figured out note for note within a week of its release. Pretty amazing.
Jimmy is playin it as recorded. When Steve plays it live, he mixes up the solo's. After about 20 years, it's hard to play the exact same leads and still keep them fresh.
swamirob - i'm sorry but you're a complete idiot when it comes to this issue. steve morse is "elementary" compared to jimmy herring? probably the single most stupid statement i've heard in months, years even.
@swamirob .... sorry bub, there's not a guitar player on the planet that can make Steve Morse look like an elementary player. You doubt it? Ask Jimmy Herring! He would laugh at your petty foolishness. And it's all about "standing on the backs of giants" in every human endeavor. You can tell just by watching this video that Jimmy was standing on Steve's back for a good long time!! He even built his guitar exactly like Steve's. So, nice try.
@FyodorMDostoyevskys Seen Morse ten times, thats his material!!! Anybody with hundreds of hours into note for noting someone else's songs can do it.Like to hear his own creativity, not like parrot playing.Music about you!your signature,style.... period!!! Just my personal view on things.Last,,Morse is the most rounded, versatile player on the planet. That explains why hes in the gallery of greats!
There were lots of kids at GIT in 1984/1985 practicing hours each day that couldn't pull that off. So I disagree that "anyone with hundreds of hours" can do that. You also have to remember that Jimmy was in his early to mid 20s when that video was shot. He wasn't trying to show off his originality. He was showing that he could duplicate a Steve Morse song as well anyone. Jimmy has his own unique style now. Its evolved quite a bit from that 26 year old clip.
@gtrcoach ...if age is a factor, it should also be noted that Jimmy is about 23 in this video- still in school and still parroting someone else's music. At 20 years old, Steve Morse was done parroting others, graduated from the University of Miami, composed and recorded "The Great Spectacular" LP (which included songs like Ice Cakes, Refried Funky Chicken, Country House Shuffle, Wages of Weirdness, Leprechaun Promenade, What If, etc) and was about a year away from being signed to a major label.
@gtrcoach PS- Don't get me wrong: I LOVE Jimmy Herring. I just think Steve Morse has a higher degree of talent and truly exhibited it earlier in his life. Steve was always Steve without Jimmy... the same CANNOT be said the other way around!
@swamirob Just opened for Jimmy last night in Lancaster PA!!! I have been a huge since ARU. Unbelievably one of a kind... As far as Jimmy covering a Steve Morse tune: If he's truly playing it note for note.... that would sound ridiculous to say Jimmy played it better. None of the less, two guitar gods! This is a treat thanks for posting!
tele with a strat neck, which is what steve morse used to play...jimmy has said in a bunch of interviews that he was obsessed with steve and the dregs back in the day, so it makes sense
hell yeah, if anyone knows any links to any other OLD herring videos i would be very appreciative

That's pretty much note for note! Great song and if you can play Steve Morse pretty much note for note, you've got some technical skills.

best cover of "On the Pipe" or of ANY Morse tune for that matter on Youtube. The other guys fall short of Jimmy Herring .

Jimmy is not just playing a Steve Morse song... look at his guitar. This guy was a Steve Morse FANATIC at this time.
Tele body, 70's Strat neck, 2 humbuckers, 2 single coils, and lots of switches... sound familiar?

This kind of stuff is what makes YouTube great. How else would I ever get to see this?

If what you say is true, then Steve should be covering jimmy's material, not the other way around. Duh...

Steve Morse wrote the piece that is in the clip.

Jimmy is amazing, but nobody makes Steve Morse look like an elementary player. Just appreciate them both as immense talents.
