  • I find this really interesting :)

  • I noticed that the accent of Singlish is similar to the accent Cantonese & Hokkien people have!!xD

  • True story, I sat across table from 2 Singaporeans for 2 hours, at the end, I asked my friend if they were speaking some indigenous language native to singapore. Turns out they were speaking english. Couldn't understand a single word.

But for the ang mor ah. "Lah" is something subliminal lah. Cannot learn but only feel. My 5 year old son can use lah in all the right places as soon as he can talk but my English brother in law stil dunno where to put lah right. the lah atchuallee come from Malay lah.

  • The guy who said that Singlish is cool.. may I say that i love his accent?! Though I'm not sure where it's from.

  • something very similar to hokien people, when Taiwanese speak Chinese and Singaporean speaks English.

  • U should really put a translation or meaning for those words )))

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • @TheStabalise So...you won't be able to live in Singapore I think.

  • the argentine chick is hot

  • this like more to chinese singlish then singapore singlish

  • what company is this? now i understand why back then when i was playing starcraft/ warcraft 3 why people would be going "lah" all the time, it sounded like a chinese lah but not really since it was used so indiscriminately

  • Perfect English bro.

  • its weird/funny seeing ang moh say "ang moh" hahas....

  • im from the philippines and i speak ilokano. we also use the word "lah" as emphasis. for example when we say yes of course, we say "wen la". ilokano is one of the local languages in philippines beside tagalog.

  • I'm born in Singapore but, I really hate Singlish...I couldn't understand them.

  • Wow, I never knew people thought Singlish was cool, lol.

  • HAHAHAHAHA... good one!

  • LMAO........ lah is nw officially in the DICTIONARY!!! LMAO

  • Haha So funny;

    They dont really know when to use "la" "leh" "le" "liao" at the end of the sentence;

It sounded weird and doesn't make any sense to me LOL

    FUNNY!

I love how singlish came naturally to us XD

  • LOL; Weird accent with Singlish; very hard to understand ><

  • @xWarBoix Both Chinese and Malay have influence on the word 'lah'.

In Chinese, it comes from the character 啦 (la) and it is used as a interjection. For example, 对啦! If we were to compare between Majulah and 对啦, the usage of Singlish 'lah' is closer to 对啦. However, why it is spelled as 'lah' may be due to Malay influence.

  • "Everyone thinks I am an ang mo"

    You are.

  • i think shiok has some malay origins..

  • @hexagonmoose Who cares whether you're Aussie or Lousy haha...

  • If i were them i would snort in derision at the fucked up dialect Singaporeans so proudly embrace.

  • @ContemplateYourLife

Looks to me they're just having fun. Even so, please don't generalise so conveniently. You don't know the country well enough to make a judgement as such. You're terribly misunderstood to think that all Singaporeans embrace singlish proudly, if not our government wouldn't be promoting speak-good-english campaigns so aggressively. but of course its a problem that stems from the embedded culture and thus cannot be easily manipulated by mere communication campaigns.

  • @yuurei85 why dont u fuck off son u donno shit

  • @liuxiaoshan please do enlighten me and tell me what i do not know smartass. i would appreciate some constructive feedback rather than you shooting off like a clueless piece of crap. your probably the reason why even the taiwanese are criticising singaporean english.

  • @yuurei85 AGREE!

  • @yuurei85 Yeah, it makes lots of sense...

  • so funny and so cute

  • actually lah is from the malay language as well.

  • @magnifyingmary Cantonese also uses lah too. Cantonese also has 'lor'.

  • @magnifyingmary it's also from the hokkien

  • you can see that from 2:00 to 2:28 theres one lady moving his puppet.

  • They are so gay!!!!!

  • i love u ppl :Dlots of other chime english ppl dont like singlish =3=

  • I just want to say that the young Chinese lady was wrong to inform her friend that "lah" originates from the Chinese. It is commonly used in the Malay language.

  • @malinablu57 actually the word lar came from um....hokkien, cantonese and um maybe a little but of chinese

so u cant really say if it is originated from malay becos well -.-

    singlish is just too unique

  • Singaporeans here... what is the meaning of "La" in every sentence??

  • @TRICIASU "Lah" is used to exaggerate an expression... just like the way a stereotypical Scottish man says "aye" at the end of the sentence. :)

  • Comment removed

  • WTF why would you make fun of the language when it is not yours in the first place?! Speak English language in the right way! It's not your language so use it in the right way!

  • @alaldave so what language is ours? Can't a language evolve, like how each of the Commonwealth countries have their own brand of English?

  • @fcym Utter rubbish !! This is one of the lame excuses Singaporeans have been using for not being able to speak and right proper English...

  • @louisesoon "write"

  • Comment removed

  • @fcym My sentence " What a failure!" does not make sense to you, it's purely because of your POOR GRAMMAR, anyway, what do silly Singaporeans know about English grammar? Otherwise, your government woulndn't have encouraged Singaporeans to speak good English and the world-renowned Mr. Lee Kuan Yew would not have frowned upon your horrible Singlish some time ago. Sigh !!! Do you understand my English? I am hoping I'm not casting my pearl before the swine.

  • @louisesoon I was not referring to that sentence. I can understand that very well though I do not understand how being unable to understand that would be due to poor grammar.

    I was referring to:

"Utter rubbish !! This is one of the lame excuses Singaporeans have been using for not being able to speak and right proper English.."

Well, I saw your corrections later on, though it was surprisingly marked as spam.

Since you are mocking Singaporeans, I guess you are not one. So where are you from?

  • Comment removed

  • @louisesoon oh never mind. I found out that you are our dear neighbour. The country whose citizens have fantastic English language skills that they can mock our English standard but the citizens have to come to us to seek for an education because the education there is just _________. The country whose land is thousands times bigger than ours and have more times more people but their GDP is smaller than ours. The country whose ex-PM is always so jealous of our country. Never mind, I let you win.

  • @louisesoon I'm a silly singaporean and i speak english with an american accent. You honestly think that ALL singaporeans are unable to communicate with proper english? Wait. OMG. You're from Malaysia? Hahaha I took your comment seriously because i thought you were some guy from the west and i didn't want people to think about Singaporeans like that, where we lack proper education on english. BUT then i saw that you were from Malaysia and now i don't give a fuck. Eh bangsat, mati aja loh.

  • @louisesoon For someone who is ridiculing others for bad usage of English, you did not even realise that your sentence does not make sense. Quoting your words, what a failure!

You are not the only one. Other 'Singlish-ridiculers' have terrible English too. Missing punctuations, letters that should be in capitals are not in capitals etc.

If you want to mock others, please ensure that your house is in order. Otherwise, how can those lousy speakers learn from your fantastic English?

    Hypocrites.

  • @fcym Ha ha there...I had wanted to write " wouldn't "...

  • @alaldave Exactly, thumbs up here for your smart remarks yeah...

  • chao ji bai

  • @juan150156 i agree with you

  • why is john in the video!? hmmm...

  • Thumbs up for Singlish Lovers ~!

P.S : Stupid Taiwanese criticises Singlish. Their English are so damn out of reach. ( Available on Youtube : Taiwanese Celebrity Criticises Singlish )

  • @CeraFate

There are a terror. Every single English word had been stripped of emotion and expression. Just listen to the 'pregnant' and 'sorry' example.

  • @coolballer8: weirdo 'cos apparently you talk like a singaporean too... at least from what you've wrote...

  • @snowygurl87 Omg ! Your English grammar sucks to the core !!! Shame on Singaporeans! What a failure!

  • @louisesoon really?! apparently i'm definitely a lot better than you. i don't blame u for being jealous of singapore because you should! bleah!

  • @snowygurl87 It's a waste of time talking to one of the ignorant persons like you !!! Fancy you claiming to be " a lot " better than me when you even have trouble using the basic Present Perfect Tense correctly. What in the world is wrong with Singaporeans' command of the English Language??? Part of your sentence reads " ...have wrote... If you were to show your former English teacher this, he or she wouldn't know whether to laugh or to cry..haha..

  • @louisesoon ... One word will counter your entire statement. One word will make you look like a fool.

Grammar. Actually, no, how about 'English'?

Quoting from your paragraph " Its a waste of time talking to one of the ignorant persons like you !!!"

How would your teacher react to this? Hmm, hard to guess. There are so many possibilities, dont you think?

  • Some people always think that Singlish is bad English. what they don't realise is that Singlish also has its own precise intonations and "grammatical rules". It's "like" any other language.

  • lols, ya, they think the 'lah', 'leh' and 'loh' is can anyhow use one loh, den like wtf like tt. you see,i am speaking singlish, lols

  • Singlish = English ( main) , chinese ( including dialects like hokkien and cantonese, as the majority), malay, tamil, and some ang moh language.

And something in our blood that makes us speak like this!
