The rein that goes over the head is called a check rein, made so infamous by Rebecca Joyce Sewell. Sewell believed it to be only for the purpose of pulling a horse's head up. In fact, the check rein is for the purpose its' name describes. A fit horse can put chin to chest and take off. Racehorses do that frequently. In an earlier day, horses were not just glorified lawnmowers. They were used daily and became very fit. The check rein prevented run aways by keeping the horse from tucking chin.
Good question!!!! The reason you can not ride a mini horse is because you are putting your weight on their backs. when you drive your weight is on the wheels of the cart. The mini should feel almost no weight on his back at all. However they are very strong and can pull twice their weight. So if you weigh 150lbs, your mini should be able to pull 300. I however like my mini's a little bigger for driving, at least 33 inches or taller. The real small ones do seem to have a harder time with it.
Why is it in the US so many people use that extra rein to prevent the pony to lower its head? I see it constantly on American clips. It's something we never use and never will use.
You are talking about the over check or side check, right? It does come with the harness when you buy it here. Some people do take it off and I keep mine real loose so my horses can lower their heads and go on the bit.
2 is a great age to start training your mini to drive. Get him/ her used to the cart and harness and practice ground driving. Then at the age of three you can really start actually driving.
ha ha..so cute! I LOVE how at 2:40 you say "good boy" and you can hear him kinda get a little pep in his step like "yea, I'm doin goood.." lol adorable..
I only go out for about an hour when I drive, but I guess if they were in shape and driving all the time you could go out for much longer. I just don't have the time to drive them to much.
the britching isnt really needed and when we show them they tell us that it actually isnt needed because it limites their back leg movments. not that thats any of my buisness. but they are beautiful horses by the way, lovely color
I actually have never seen mini horses with shoes. They have really good feet. I drive my horses, at the most, a dozen times a year, so it doesn't effect their feet at all being on the roads. If I drove them on the roads everyday it probably would be a problem. Although I do know the Amish have mini horses and they drive on the roads a lot. I know they do not put shoes on them, but who knows what the condition of their hoofs are either?
Sorry it took me so long to reply. Driving is a lot like riding. The most important thing that I do different with driving is use my voice when I first teach them. Teaching them to Ho, stop, is the most important. Ground drive them first and use voice commands. They are smart and will pick it up quick. Also, you want to get them used to the cart, so if you can train them with a horse that already drives. Ground drive the mini you are training next to the one that is pulling the cart.
hi, great video, could u tell me where u got your harness from. My mini has just started driving and the first harness i got was leather and has broke already so i have ordered a nylon one now just for the time being but i would still like to get him a good quality leather one.
The most reasonable cart that I know of is the blue one in this video. It sells new for 395 from Kay Jay farms. Otherwise you could look for a used easy entry cart.
Hi! If you need to know something about the mini's send me a message through my page. I'll be glad to help!
You can trot on the pavement a little. We trot a little on the way to this big field we drive in, but I wouldn't trot on the road for a long period of time because there is a thing called road founder from trotting long periods of time on hard surfaces.
thats great, I would hate to see miniatures or ponies for that matter shod. Their hoofs are so hard and up for anything they dont really need shoes, unless of course you ask a lot from them which I dont think you do. I love all your videos by the way.
The cart that I am driving with is a little more expensive then then the one with the blue seat. Check out Kay Jay farms for the cart and harness. The cart with the blue seat runs somewhere around 395 and then about 250 to 300 for the harness. It is made of biothane which is super easy to clean.
yes it really helped cuz i have 2 mini ponies and im breaking them both to drive, and this video helped alot, cuz u can see how the horse acts and the sounds of the horses feet!! its very cute!! thanks
It looks like tremendous fun! I love it! I never knew you could drive them "off road" Is it difficult to learn how to turn tight corners like that? The part where you were off road and turned the corner looks scary to me! It makes me wonder if driving a horse might be a bit like pulling a horse trailer, only like from behind? I never learned to pull my own horse trailer because I'm afraid to even try. lol!
LOL!!!!!! It looks worse then it is, but sometimes when you are first training the mini's they have know idea how to turn and kind of get stuck! LOL!!!
Haha, I put it on full screen on my comp and I felt like I was in the cart xD And you have a nice voice! I heard it for like the first time I think! And your pony has a nice painted butt xD lol
Wow, do you ever get to drive in a pretty place. So green and shady. Where are you? Your little boy's backside is so cute!! We gave you a 5 star!! Thanks for sharing!

someone that I know has regular horses and told me ya can't ride mini horses as adult so why would you be able to pull youself w/wagon weight legit?

@tinytinytiny Yes, I guess that's it. Weird they sell it like that. Why don't you take it all off? They don't need it.

That is true when you show mini's and ring work, but when you are out on trails it is a good idea to have it on.

I have bio thane harness's. They are really hard to break and super easy to clean and they always look new.
Try Double Diamond mini tack on a google search. Also C&D little steppers tack sells a nice mini harness.
