  • The rein that goes over the head is called a check rein, made so infamous by Rebecca Joyce Sewell. Sewell believed it to be only for the purpose of pulling a horse's head up. In fact, the check rein is for the purpose its' name describes. A fit horse can put chin to chest and take off. Racehorses do that frequently. In an earlier day, horses were not just glorified lawnmowers. They were used daily and became very fit. The check rein prevented run aways by keeping the horse from tucking chin.

  • someone that I know has regular horses and told me ya can't ride mini horses as adult so why would you be able to pull youself w/wagon weight legit?

  • Good question!!!! The reason you can not ride a mini horse is because you are putting your weight on their backs. when you drive your weight is on the wheels of the cart. The mini should feel almost no weight on his back at all. However they are very strong and can pull twice their weight. So if you weigh 150lbs, your mini should be able to pull 300. I however like my mini's a little bigger for driving, at least 33 inches or taller. The real small ones do seem to have a harder time with it.

  • Love your video and just now enjoyed your pleasure drive! I have a mini that I need to get going in harness soon.

  • i especially liked this video because you did not put music in it. I hope that you make more videos without music

  • Why is it in the US so many people use that extra rein to prevent the pony to lower its head? I see it constantly on American clips. It's something we never use and never will use.

  • You are talking about the over check or side check, right? It does come with the harness when you buy it here. Some people do take it off and I keep mine real loose so my horses can lower their heads and go on the bit.

  • @tinytinytiny Yes, I guess that's it. Weird they sell it like that. Why don't you take it all off? They don't need it.

  • How old does a mini have to be to drive? (I have a mini that is about 2)

  • 2 is a great age to start training your mini to drive. Get him/ her used to the cart and harness and practice ground driving. Then at the age of three you can really start actually driving.

  • @tinytinytiny Thank You!!

  • I also drive a mini and she is a wonderful girl...

  • ha ha..so cute! I LOVE how at 2:40 you say "good boy" and you can hear him kinda get a little pep in his step like "yea, I'm doin goood.." lol adorable..

  • Thanks :)

He is a good little mini. LOL!!!!!

  • How long can you drive them I'm worried about over doing my mini

  • I only go out for about an hour when I drive, but I guess if they were in shape and driving all the time you could go out for much longer. I just don't have the time to drive them to much.

  • the britching isnt really needed and when we show them they tell us that it actually isnt needed because it limites their back leg movments. not that thats any of my buisness. but they are beautiful horses by the way, lovely color

  • That is true when you show mini's and ring work, but when you are out on trails it is a good idea to have it on.

  • i know that most mini horses don't need shoes but if you drive them like this would they need shoes?

  • I actually have never seen mini horses with shoes. They have really good feet. I drive my horses, at the most, a dozen times a year, so it doesn't effect their feet at all being on the roads. If I drove them on the roads everyday it probably would be a problem. Although I do know the Amish have mini horses and they drive on the roads a lot. I know they do not put shoes on them, but who knows what the condition of their hoofs are either?

  • I love to drive my Mini, Sprinkles. Great job, your horse looks really good there. :)

  • Thanks! I enjoyed the show!

  • Thats Looks like funn!!! I have a bunch of miniature horses that i am going to train. how did you learn to train your mins??

  • Sorry it took me so long to reply. Driving is a lot like riding. The most important thing that I do different with driving is use my voice when I first teach them. Teaching them to Ho, stop, is the most important. Ground drive them first and use voice commands. They are smart and will pick it up quick. Also, you want to get them used to the cart, so if you can train them with a horse that already drives. Ground drive the mini you are training next to the one that is pulling the cart.

  • That was very cool i have just finished training my mini and now i am going to start with the cart

  • That looks like soooo much fun!!!

I was wondering...where do you get all the cart stuff from???

    cheers : ]

  • Thanks, it is fun! :)

You can get the cart from Kay Jay farms and the harness from Double Diamond tack.

  • Ok

    thnxs : ]

  • Do people give you weird looks? LOL

  • Sorry it took me so long to reply. LOL! and the answer to your question is YES, sometimes they do! LOL!!!!!

  • I think that its wonderful that you are always telling your mini, "Good Boy!" I can tell that you really love them!

  • Thanks! He was just learning and I was reassuring him. LOL! He is a good little mini and now also drives in a team.

  • They are just adorable :-) Did you train your minis to drive? I was thinking of training mine to drive after seeing your video!

  • I do train my mini's.

You should train yours to drive, it is a lot of fun!

  • Im going to tain mine this summer. Could you maybe post a video on how you trained yours? I would appreciate it :-)

  • Ok, I'll see what I can do.

  • Thanks :-)

  • They have to be shoed do do this much road work right?

  • No, mini's have really good feet. I guess if we did this all the time, but we take them out only a few times during the summer.

  • Cool!!!

  • hi, great video, could u tell me where u got your harness from. My mini has just started driving and the first harness i got was leather and has broke already so i have ordered a nylon one now just for the time being but i would still like to get him a good quality leather one.

  • I have bio thane harness's. They are really hard to break and super easy to clean and they always look new.

Try Double Diamond mini tack on a google search. Also C&D little steppers tack sells a nice mini harness.

  • i have a little mini horse and i am in my second year of driving! How many years has this one had?

  • This is his second year too in this video. I didn't drive him to much the first year, I just basically got him used to the tack.

  • Do you know where you can find a cart for under 350 dallors?

  • The most reasonable cart that I know of is the blue one in this video. It sells new for 395 from Kay Jay farms. Otherwise you could look for a used easy entry cart.

  • Thanks I finally bought one for my mini, Buddy!

  • I am getting one aND i need some tips can you send me any info i would be SOO HAPPY!!! thank you tnX GOOD VD o and can they run or trot on the pavment

    ???

  • Hi! If you need to know something about the mini's send me a message through my page. I'll be glad to help!

You can trot on the pavement a little. We trot a little on the way to this big field we drive in, but I wouldn't trot on the road for a long period of time because there is a thing called road founder from trotting long periods of time on hard surfaces.

  • I drive minis too and I here the same thing! LOL it was cool

  • Thanks :)

You should put on some pictures and video's of your mini's

I would love to see them.

  • Beautiful horses, but I have a question, are they shod?

  • Thank you!

It does almost sound like they have shoes in this video, but they don't.

  • thats great, I would hate to see miniatures or ponies for that matter shod. Their hoofs are so hard and up for anything they dont really need shoes, unless of course you ask a lot from them which I dont think you do. I love all your videos by the way.

  • i love the sound of their little feet!

  • The cart that I am driving with is a little more expensive then then the one with the blue seat. Check out Kay Jay farms for the cart and harness. The cart with the blue seat runs somewhere around 395 and then about 250 to 300 for the harness. It is made of biothane which is super easy to clean.

    Good Luck!

  • How much would a cart like this cost? with all the harness and everything?

  • Do you compete in harnessracing with your ponies? (Sorry for bad english >_o

  • No, LOL!!!! but it sounds like fun!

  • yes it really helped cuz i have 2 mini ponies and im breaking them both to drive, and this video helped alot, cuz u can see how the horse acts and the sounds of the horses feet!! its very cute!! thanks

  • omg that was such a cute video!! i loved it

  • Thanks so much and I am glad you liked it! :)

  • I have a 2yr old Welsh pony filly that I am planning to drive. This just makes me want it even more:-)

  • Did you teach them to drive? I just baught a harness and am on the hunt for a cart now:) They sure are hardy little boogers are'nt they!

  • Yes I did teach them to drive and they are really strong! LOL

If you want a good reasonable cart look up kay jay farms. Good luck and have fun driving! :D

  • The sound of those little hooves are just musical! Great vid!

  • Thanks! I didn't ad music to this video so you could here his tiny little hooves! It really makes you feel like you are driving him.

  • I love this video!!

Shmay has such a cute booty!!:)

  • THANKS!!! LOL!!!!! :D

  • that would be soooo much fun!!

  • Thanks! It is, lol! :D

  • I would love to do this =

  • You should! It is fun! lol

  • Driving is so much fun! Thanks for sharing this video :)

  • You are very welcome! lol!!!

  • you should enter my horse video contest

  • Thx! I'll check it out!

  • It looks like tremendous fun! I love it! I never knew you could drive them "off road" Is it difficult to learn how to turn tight corners like that? The part where you were off road and turned the corner looks scary to me! It makes me wonder if driving a horse might be a bit like pulling a horse trailer, only like from behind? I never learned to pull my own horse trailer because I'm afraid to even try. lol!

  • LOL!!!!!! It looks worse then it is, but sometimes when you are first training the mini's they have know idea how to turn and kind of get stuck! LOL!!!

  • Aww, I know how the poor little guys must feel! giggle.. :D

  • aww! his little trot is SOO adorable!! :)

    xx

  • THX! :):)

That is why I didn't put in music so you could here his trot too!

  • LOl me 2! I put it on full screen and suddenly I was in the cart!!! Hes soo cute!! very well done 5/5 and a fav!

  • Thanks so much!

and tell Sparky I said HI! :)

  • Haha, I put it on full screen on my comp and I felt like I was in the cart xD And you have a nice voice! I heard it for like the first time I think! And your pony has a nice painted butt xD lol

  • Thanks! :D

I put it on full screen and you are right you do feel like you are in the cart!

  • Aw! What a cute little butt

    hahhaa.

  • LOL! You do see a lot of his cute little butt in this video!~ haha!

  • Wow, do you ever get to drive in a pretty place. So green and shady. Where are you? Your little boy's backside is so cute!! We gave you a 5 star!! Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you!

We live in New York on Long Island. Long Island is a very pretty place with a lot of green in the summer and we also have beautiful beaches too.

  • Enjoy, enjoy. My daughters have yet to see the ocean. Isn't it amazing how we live so far apart, but know we love the same things?!?!

  • I know! Wish we lived closer so we could take all the mini's for a drive together!

  • lol that made me feel like i was in the cart! I rate it 5* and a favorite!

  • Thanks!!!

I am so glad you liked it! :)
