The ice shelf looked amazing, how is it that they ice tends to arrange itself in such an orthogonal structure?

what you saw is not the ice shelf but the parts after the calving line. after the glacier reach the sea with no ground supporting the thick ice and the warmer water melting the ice it cracks and break away. think of it like glass. when it cracks it does look orthogonal.

size matters. say you had a 2mm thick rope of spider silk and a 2mm thick rope of steel. the silk would be stronger when pulled.
