In his book, Ali wrote that he actually liked Frazier and Frazier loaned him money in 1970 before Ali was allowed to box again. Ali wrote that the insults that he hurled at Frazier were just to publicize their fights and drive up attendance at the closed circuit venues.
God Bless the People's Champ, RIP Smoking Joe! Fantastic interview! What a humble person with a great sense of humor and purpose, need more right now like him!
Joe never deserved any of the insults that Ali made against him. But Joe showed his true class by never getting into slagging matches with him. I can understand that you need to promote the fight and make out that you are going to destroy the other guy, but what Ali said during all the three fight build ups, especially the third fight was way over the line , it was nasty spiteful and vindictive. But Joe showed just what a man he was when he got him in the ring. A book to read is Ghosts of Manila
@baz20881 well they did get into a fist fight on national television that Joe provoked because Ali called him ignorant. So that to me is lacking class. Considering Ali was telling Joe to sit down several times before he stood up and the fight started.
This era was one of the Golden eras of Boxing. Smokin' Joe is as tough as they come. I love this brother. He was a real warrior. His memory will be here forever. Smokin' Joe helped make Muhammad Ali, not taking away anything from Ali because he fought Liston and all the other top heavyweights of his time. But Frazier added gold to Ali's legacy. We miss you Joe. maurice
Joe was humble in defeat and addmitted that he made mistakes which cost him the fight with Foreman. Ali was never humble in defeat, after their first fight when Joe beat him, he wouldn't admit he had even lost. I think Jack Benny was a patronizing prick on this show, and Bill Cosby was, i think anyway, trying to wind Joe up, what do you guys out there think! RIP Joe, a modest under rated champion of the world.
@baz20881 its typical of people who bought into ali's insults of smoking joe ( we all know what ali said i aint goner repeat it) ali was very wrong and very nasty, so other people jumped on it and try to make fun. Frazier is one of the all time greats no question about that fact. R.I.P CHAMP
@bbqfanno1 scatch Marciano from that list, wasn't a real champ. For all the the others mentioned none of them were ran into retirement...I.e Floyd Patterson running Marciano into retirement oh yeah do the research.
Former heavyweight world champion Joe Frazier was arrested in February 2004 after police responded to a 911 domestic violence call from his North Philadelphia home. When police arrived a woman, the mother of Frazier's son, answered the door. She told the police that Frazier had hit her and there were injuries to her face to back up the claim. The charges were later dropped, after the woman refused to testify against Frazier.
Never understood why boxers seem to be separated into two categories. The humble respectful types like Pacquiao and Frazier and those arrogant garbage speaking fools like Haye & countless others. I wont include Ali in the latter category as despite some of his silly comments, I do believe he was humble underneath the braggadocio and had genuine respect for his opponents. I think he just got carried away before fights maybe due to fear.
@flaxonx3 Ali was joking around most of the time and everyone knew it. Ali is humble and really has always been a sweet guy. Haye actually believes his own shit.
@flaxonx3 One of the more intelligent posts I have seen on Ali of late. I am sick of these peeps who know nothing about boxing slagging off a truly GREAT man like Ali - yes, much of his antics were all about psychology (although some of it was wrong and cruel). But he is really a beautiful soul. Also, the bottom line is he backed it up (most of the time) and ended up indeed proving what he said all along - he is the greatest (albeit at a cost to his health)
Ali may have been a better boxer in the ring, but Frazier,Foreman,Louis,Marciano were better and humbler men outside of the ring. I have no respect for braggers full of spiritual pride who act like they are God and the world is supposed to worship them as God the Greatest.
@BBQFanNo1 It's not bragging if you can back it up. Ali is smart, and a respectable person. No matter what anyone thinks of Ali, people either loved him, or loved to hate him. That's why he talked so much. He was a good promoter. If he didn't talk like he did, do you think he would have been as successful as he was? Say what you want, he was a smart man, and he could back up his trash talk.
This is great . Thank you for posting. Do you have the interviews of Muhammad Ali on the Dick Cavett show. I believe he was on the show at least three times in the late 60s early seventies. If anyone has thoses interviews PLEASE post.
Frazier has been knocked down a total of 11 times (if I remember right) throughout the two Foreman fights, but nobody talks about the fact that he got up everytime from those knockdowns. How many fighters could get up once or twice from a prime Foreman or even old George? If one of, if not the, hardest HW punchers in history can't keep the man down, who can?
@Maryjaneslave It beggars belief that these men can get back on their feet from even one of those punches that would leave you and me in intensive care in a hospital. Their ability to soak up punishment is astonishing and they deserve utter respect. I wish you peace and well-being.
@Maryjaneslave i agree! i love frazier. but as an ali fan i have to say this: if frazier is incredible for getting up everytime he'd been knocked down...how great is muhammad ali from not going down after being hit the same punches and winning the fight. and boy, he took foremans hardest shots.
its a shame he is not a top 5 hw due to the foreman fight. i wish they would realize that the frazier foreman fought was a shell of the man that ali fought
@messier991102 He posed a challenge to Ali because Ali didn't have that kind of power, and he could get inside on Ali. Foreman, you just can't trade w/ him, nor do you want to come forward. Frazier did. But, because of the fights w/ Ali, and what they both gave to boxing. He doesn't have to look up at anyone, period.
as a dutch guy , and as 'dick'is a dutch name , i find it strange that the name is used in the u.s. people named dick even got famous there , how come ?
@isitcosimblack for men aged 60 and over named richard, "dick" is a common nickname, even more than "rick", "ricky" or "richie", which are more common now.
Foreman was just too big for Frazier. Frazier's style was to outgun his opponents, and he could not overpower Foreman. I remember how shocked I was when Foreman demolished Joe. But looking back, it should not have been so surprising. The only fight that stunned me more than this one was when Ali stopped Foreman. I really thought Foreman was going to wipe the floor with Ali, and Ali just had a better fight plan and executed it perfectly.
I hate the announcer of the Frazier Foreman fight they showed here. He sounded ridiculous. I wouldn't want to hear that voice broadcasting a major heavyweight title fight.
Jack Benny? Look here moron, Jack Benny was and (is) considered the greatest stand-up comedian of all time. Ask anyone. Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters, etc; they'd all agree that Jack Benny had the greatest timing of any comedian that ever lived. In fact I think he's funnier than Cassius Clay
Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier recently was arrested in North Philadelphia for assaulting a woman in a domestic dispute, police said.
Frazier, 60, was charged with simple assault and reckless endangerment, police said.
Someone called 911 from the home and when police arrived, a woman who opened the door had injuries to her lip and face and alleged that Frazier struck her

@MrBumboclart i think he was worried about him like everybody even though frazier was ali's rival you can't help but like this guy because of the man he was such a loveable man
@calbo555 No, Cosell is doing the broadcasting. And the reason he was shouting that? I think because he wanted Ali to have a rematch against Frazier, but that wasn't gonna happen if Foreman killed him in the ring. Or maybe it was sympathy, who knows?
@Sandu1982 Dundee is there because he just wanted to see the fight, I guess. And we still don't know what his motivation was to be screaming 'stop it', but obviously he was afraid Joe would be damaged beyond repair or even killed.
@Fripitto if i remember correct [from a docu] ali is sitting ringside aswell ? i think i saw an interview before and ali picks frazier as the winner . the winner could fight ali . im i correct ?
@isitcosimblack Pretty sure Ali wasn't there. Ali wanted Frazier to win as Frazier had beaten him and Ali wanted a rematch. Ali was not a champion at this point and wasn't really that well placed to call the shots about who would fight him next. Before he fought Frazier again he also lost to Norton.
Ali was a show man, and called Frazier a tom cos he kept calling Ali by his slve name Clay. YOU are just another racist prick who thinks you have the right to chose heros for black people. Did Frazier speak out against injustice against his own people ? No. Well then , piss off !
