This car is really very lame. Definitely looks like a sports car, but is more like a economy car in its handling. Not competitive in the the real sports car world. Pontiac's last ditch effort to repair a very poorly manufactured group of automobiles. However hard the yanks tried, the world of superior auto engineering has left the yanks in the dust...again. No loss to the rest of the world!
Who cares if you have to "take it apart". I'm so sick of hearing how lazy people are that they can't even get out of the car and take 10 seconds to stow the top away manually. Don't buy a t-top/convertable car if your that lazy that you complain about getting out of your car to put it down.
I would be sold except for the fact you can't take the hard top with you. If I travel in 7 hr to 13 drive to visit family or friends I may want to take that hard top with me but if the weather is nice I of course I want the top down during the drive. And the the soft top takes up luggage space. So MX-5 PRHT wins out again. Too bad because this car is hot.
I read on CNN's website about a month ago that DELOREAN is talking about bringing back the Solstice! Honestly, and it looks pretty cool, not too many drastic changes from the original. Supposed to be next year or 2012. I have the a dark grey convertible Solstice and LOVE IT! I will never get rid of it. The sweetest ride I've even experienced. Really, really sweet.

My favorite Pontiac. My parents had two Firebird, Formulas when I was a kid (my pregnant mother was driven to the hospital in a 1970 Formula), so I still have a soft spot for GM. I own and LOVE an 08 S2000, CR, but have huge respect for what GM accomplished with these machines. I you managed to get one, I don't need to tell you how lucky you are! Peace car lovers.
Good choice. The Solstice is a very fun car to drive. You should be able to get an excellent deal on a USED Solstice with very low mileage. I got my 06' Solstice RED Convertible for a measly 14,000 and had only 12,000 miles on it.
If you do buy the 06' Solstice. Get some better tires within a few months because the stock 06' tires are terrible in the rain. Trust me. I have lost complete traction at least 4 to 5 times on wet surfaces with the awful stock tires at low acceleration lvls.
@websoull True--If you're after a true muscle car. But if it's a true sports car you want, Solstice is a decent choice. Solstice is more in line with the Triumph Spitfire and hard top Triumph GT-6, as well as the MGB and MGB-GT of old. These were relatively inexpensive, small, lightweight cars that would absolutely devastate a Mustang or Camaro on a twisty mountain road where handling is more important than brute acceleration.

I own a GXP coupe & love it. Faster than a Boxster 0-60 in 5.5 for 1/2 the price. I'm 5'7" fits like a glove. For 30K it's super sharp, fast, with lots of features: Bluetooth, XM, chrome 18's, 6-disc, all power, leather, etc. The removable cloth top fits in the trunk. Makes up for not being able to stow the hard top. Minimal compromises for a 2-seater. Not ideal for everyone. Most won't be disappointed as a pleasure car & a 1 yr only make! Not sure what else you want for that price. Head-turner.
Don't even bother comparing it to a 370z or the 135i. That's a WHOLE different league and NO Pontiac shitbox can match it.
Compromises like these are just unforgivable with today's technology. So many better alternatives. Hell, I'd rather get a Hyundai Genesis coupe that outperforms this and still have money saved.

Welcome to life, your first car is a beater, and usually not what you want. Speaking as a teenage driver myself, I know what it's like to see all these nice cars, but it's just not worth it until your older. Insurance sucks, car payments on a part time job suck.

I will openly admit, American was suckin' in the 80's, imports were MUCH better quality. But that is no longer the case, and if you people would actually drive American anymore you would realize that. I don't know why American companies still have this bad reputation for crap cars, they build some of the best now.
I have had to drive an American car 3 times in the past 2 years. I drove a Ford Focus, the worst car I have ever been in in my life. The car didn't even have a tachometer, the fit and finish were horrible. I drove a Chrysler Sebring, I spotted not even 1 piece of leather not even or the steering wheel or shift knob, and the Avenger was the same exact thing. I also owned a 99 V6 Cougar and it developed knock and grenaded, even after having it tuned 2x in one year, and changing the oil biweekly!
Well, I dunno what to tell you then. My father is currently a GM employee, and unlike a lot of employee's from the other Two, we have stayed loyal to GM. We have personally never had a problem with any car being unreliable or having small stupid problems wrong with the cars.
My other side of the family has a history of loyal ford workers. Driving their cars, I have never seen any of these little problems either.
Go to Edmunds(.)com and read the consumer report on the 99-01 Cougar V6's. It got a 40/100 for reliability. Ford marked the tiing belt placement wrong on the engines so they rolled off the showroom floor as ticking time-bombs. They didn't even have the decency to issue a recall! And speaking of GM the Cobalt is another very bad car! I used to drive American cars until that cougar and now I own a G35 and havent missed or regretted a single day of driving imports, they are just so much better!
I dunno about that, what evidence do you have to back up a cobalt being a bad car? I personally know a few people who drive cobalts with 50K+ miles and no problems at all. The Cobalt is just the continuation of the Cavalier anyway. Have you ever looked at the odometers on some of those? 350k miles, and still running like brand new.
Maybe it's just in my blood, but I have to support GM, they pay the bills. So, with that being said, you had problems with that cougar because it was a Ford. =P
Oh and the Cobalt, I just dont like the plastic on the dash, the bubbly really hard harsh feeling plastic irritates me. But again im used to driving a 40k dollar car on a day to day basis, so granted it would irritate me. But on the converse side, my friend whos a bit younger has a Scion Tc, and it's okay, it doesn't irritate me at all. Just his ricer antics pisses me off, but the cars nice though. Same for the Civic Si, its really nice inside especially the seats are great!
your right GM makes some good cars. i drive a 2001 camaro with a 3.8L really nice car no problems at all smooth ride, pretty good mpg for a car that is super fun to drive. my dad have a 2008 chevy silverado 2500 z71 and thats super nice leather in it. my mom drives a cobalt not the best looking interior but its not a luxary car. it gets everyone from point A to Z on half a tank honestly "LA to Imperial valley , 400 miles" on half a tank. and my dad has a 55 chevy pickup still runs like a mofo
Yes please do go read about the Cougar V6s though, I am being serious about this. Also my brother had an older 94 Mustang GT and the ECU started flooding cylinder 7 with fuel, he had to take out the injector and go get a new ECU, he ran on 7 cylinders for 2 weeks! Nothing but headaches and MOST people that I know have experienced similar. He now drives a BMW 330i and loves it. Drive an import just out of curiousity and you won't turn back. go read on the Cougar thing, it's well documented.

Leave the top on, speed pick G/F up, get home in a hurry, pound it, take her back, pull the e-brake through Sonic on the way home. For a picnic date, take truck, go to picnic, on the way back, peel out at Sonic, and throw empty cans in truck bed and hope they blow out the next time you get on the highway. Solstice=fun car

The 370Z is 100x more respectable than a Solstice which is known as a girls car. It's faster, it handles better, sounds better, The interior is better, it has Rev Matched 6-sp vs. a 5sp. It gets worse fuel economy, but that's a really bad argument when talking about sports cars. No one buys a sports car for fuel economy. Yes, it may not be the best for America but if GM goes under and something happens to the bailout bucket, then there's no way they can hold up their 100,000 mile warranty.

I love my Sky Redline but my GOD is that soft-top design stupid. A Miata with the power-retracting hardtop DOWN has more space in the trunk than my soft-top UP! With that said, it's still a brilliant 'GT' roadster and in traditional roadster fashion, you have to endure a few impracticalities--a small price to pay for some of the best motoring experience for the money. So the coupe isn't as practical as one might like, big deal. It's amazing what one can put up with when they stop squabbling!
Now having said all that, I'd be lying if i said I wasn't a little disappointed that they couldn't make it a little more practical. But hell I'd probably never take the roof off anyway.
Although it strikes me as odd how many people see fit to piss n' moan about the roof but would probably not bat an eye at the even shoddier temporary roof design on a Murcielago roadster. I guess thats the benefit of being an exotic marque...

The 2006 Solstice out handles the 2006 Miata. The Miata has the Solstice beat on horsepower to weight ratio. While I do not like the top I prefer coupes anyways. I'd just leave the top on, who wants to see my bobble head anyways. The prior GPX Has a nice horse power to weight ratio, better than a BMW 128i. Besides the top I see no problems with this iteration of the Solstice. Besides one recall in 2008 for a seat belt anchor the Solstice has a good safety record.
Could not agree with you more. Beyond dropping the price tag, a pure coupe would probably weigh a little less and have a fractionally lower center of gravity.
comes with? its an option you have to pay for, you make it sound as if its standard. It also adds less structural rigidity with the top up and none with it down, compared to a targa setup which adds rigidity eitherway.
The Kappa platforms are built almost like a ladder-frame (aka body-on-frame) + 1, haha. If you look at that, just as a Y-body, there are no traditional strut-towers or body parts that are apart of the frame; in a sense it's more of a "space-frame" than a unibody. I don't know if those extra pillars are structural or not (they should be, the window frame is), but either way it's still a good design. I've owned a Miata (unibody) and a Sky Redline, I'll take this platform philosophy any day.
I have a solution for the top. Leave the goddamn thing on! Don't take it off. My trans am has t tops, yes they fit in the back, but I never use them. The option is there when you want it. You get want you pay for, and besides the Solstice isn't bad at all; although the Sky does look better. Everyone has champagne taste on a beer budget.

Compromises like these are just unforgivable with today's technology. So many better alternatives. Hell, I'd rather get a Hyundai Genesis coupe that outperforms this and still have money saved.

I have had to drive an American car 3 times in the past 2 years. I drove a Ford Focus, the worst car I have ever been in in my life. The car didn't even have a tachometer, the fit and finish were horrible. I drove a Chrysler Sebring, I spotted not even 1 piece of leather not even or the steering wheel or shift knob, and the Avenger was the same exact thing. I also owned a 99 V6 Cougar and it developed knock and grenaded, even after having it tuned 2x in one year, and changing the oil biweekly!

Well, I dunno what to tell you then. My father is currently a GM employee, and unlike a lot of employee's from the other Two, we have stayed loyal to GM. We have personally never had a problem with any car being unreliable or having small stupid problems wrong with the cars.
My other side of the family has a history of loyal ford workers. Driving their cars, I have never seen any of these little problems either.

Go to Edmunds(.)com and read the consumer report on the 99-01 Cougar V6's. It got a 40/100 for reliability. Ford marked the tiing belt placement wrong on the engines so they rolled off the showroom floor as ticking time-bombs. They didn't even have the decency to issue a recall! And speaking of GM the Cobalt is another very bad car! I used to drive American cars until that cougar and now I own a G35 and havent missed or regretted a single day of driving imports, they are just so much better!

I dunno about that, what evidence do you have to back up a cobalt being a bad car? I personally know a few people who drive cobalts with 50K+ miles and no problems at all. The Cobalt is just the continuation of the Cavalier anyway. Have you ever looked at the odometers on some of those? 350k miles, and still running like brand new.
Maybe it's just in my blood, but I have to support GM, they pay the bills. So, with that being said, you had problems with that cougar because it was a Ford. =P

Oh and the Cobalt, I just dont like the plastic on the dash, the bubbly really hard harsh feeling plastic irritates me. But again im used to driving a 40k dollar car on a day to day basis, so granted it would irritate me. But on the converse side, my friend whos a bit younger has a Scion Tc, and it's okay, it doesn't irritate me at all. Just his ricer antics pisses me off, but the cars nice though. Same for the Civic Si, its really nice inside especially the seats are great!

your right GM makes some good cars. i drive a 2001 camaro with a 3.8L really nice car no problems at all smooth ride, pretty good mpg for a car that is super fun to drive. my dad have a 2008 chevy silverado 2500 z71 and thats super nice leather in it. my mom drives a cobalt not the best looking interior but its not a luxary car. it gets everyone from point A to Z on half a tank honestly "LA to Imperial valley , 400 miles" on half a tank. and my dad has a 55 chevy pickup still runs like a mofo

Yes please do go read about the Cougar V6s though, I am being serious about this. Also my brother had an older 94 Mustang GT and the ECU started flooding cylinder 7 with fuel, he had to take out the injector and go get a new ECU, he ran on 7 cylinders for 2 weeks! Nothing but headaches and MOST people that I know have experienced similar. He now drives a BMW 330i and loves it. Drive an import just out of curiousity and you won't turn back. go read on the Cougar thing, it's well documented.

In April 2009, after GM announced the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010, CEO Fritz Henderson stated that the Solstice would not continue under another GM brand. In May, he added that they would consider selling the Wilmington plant and the Solstice/Sky products to an outside business. That sucks.

It's really too bad GM gave Motor Trend the option of removing the top. Just leave the targa in place if it bothers you that much. Here in SoCal, our weather isn't so horrible that we need an emergency soft top. It's too bad they couldn't be bothered to mention the inexpensive 650 dollar upgrade good for 290 hp available through GMPP.

Youre in the vast minority in thinking this car is hot. Which is why these things don't sell anyway. It can't store the top which therefire makes it useless. it's relatively slow. And the entire interior is made of trashy plastic. That silver barbie plastic is absolute trash. Actually 350Z indeedly was a bit too pricey in my opinion, but the car itself was still worth the price. Now 370Z is coming out, and heard it will be a lot cheaper than 350Z.

Leave the top on. Besides I don't buy a 260 hp coupe to go on picnic style dates. Leave the top on, speed pick G/F up, get home in a hurry, pound it, take her back, pull the e-brake through Sonic on the way home. For a picnic date, take truck, go to picnic, on the way back, peel out at Sonic, and throw empty cans in truck bed and hope they blow out the next time you get on the highway. Solstice=fun car

The 370Z is 100x more respectable than a Solstice which is known as a girls car. It's faster, it handles better, sounds better, The interior is better, it has Rev Matched 6-sp vs. a 5sp. It gets worse fuel economy, but that's a really bad argument when talking about sports cars. No one buys a sports car for fuel economy. Yes, it may not be the best for America but if GM goes under and something happens to the bailout bucket, then there's no way they can hold up their 100,000 mile warranty.

I love my Sky Redline but my GOD is that soft-top design stupid. A Miata with the power-retracting hardtop DOWN has more space in the trunk than my soft-top UP! With that said, it's still a brilliant 'GT' roadster and in traditional roadster fashion, you have to endure a few impracticalities--a small price to pay for some of the best motoring experience for the money. So the coupe isn't as practical as one might like, big deal. It's amazing what one can put up with when they stop squabbling!

The 2006 Solstice out handles the 2006 Miata. The Miata has the Solstice beat on horsepower to weight ratio. While I do not like the top I prefer coupes anyways. I'd just leave the top on, who wants to see my bobble head anyways. The prior GPX Has a nice horse power to weight ratio, better than a BMW 128i. Besides the top I see no problems with this iteration of the Solstice. Besides one recall in 2008 for a seat belt anchor the Solstice has a good safety record.

comes with? its an option you have to pay for, you make it sound as if its standard. It also adds less structural rigidity with the top up and none with it down, compared to a targa setup which adds rigidity eitherway.

The Kappa platforms are built almost like a ladder-frame (aka body-on-frame) + 1, haha. If you look at that, just as a Y-body, there are no traditional strut-towers or body parts that are apart of the frame; in a sense it's more of a "space-frame" than a unibody. I don't know if those extra pillars are structural or not (they should be, the window frame is), but either way it's still a good design. I've owned a Miata (unibody) and a Sky Redline, I'll take this platform philosophy any day.

I have a solution for the top. Leave the goddamn thing on! Don't take it off. My trans am has t tops, yes they fit in the back, but I never use them. The option is there when you want it. You get want you pay for, and besides the Solstice isn't bad at all; although the Sky does look better. Everyone has champagne taste on a beer budget.
