Down the hatch, beak, toenails and all. Their system is designed to handle all that. They catch and eat snakes too so I'm told. They can swoop from behind and snag even poisonous snakes so it is good to have them around if you life in Aussie land.
I didn't know anything about Kookaburras at all - let alone that they were carnivorous. I'm glad we don't get them here - it would cost a fortune in feeding them!!
Yes, along with the Currawong and the Koel, the Kookaburra is known to steal baby birds from their nests and carry them away. If feeding these larger carnivorous birds, it's best to give them morsels of meat, rather than seeds or nectar.
Wow, I'm really surprised that you didn't know that they're carnivores. It's pretty well known that their preferred prey is reptiles, one reason why they focus on sausages instead of steaks at BBQs. o_0
Damn nature you scary.

The blue winged kookaburra is a large species of the kingfisher family. This one appears to be a female.

I never really thought kookaburras were cannibals, or carnivores for taht matter. Ah well, you learn something new every day!

Ack, I sort of had myself confused back there. I knew they WERE carnivores, but I meant it as in like, not eating snakes or anything.
