Just to let you know ppl that are saying that this is song is about a whore/tramp. It's not about that. It's about having something better than having nothing at all. If I knew that my husband ran off and I was going to die soon, I would send my oldest child away also so that she could have a better life. So when she does she won't be a whore/tramp.
I used to think she was going with the guy to become a singer and actress and all... Wow I feel ignorant. And it's sad that that does happen then and now
@SylvverInWonderland Don't feel bad, that is what I thought it was about too. I do believe my mother ecouraged that understanding if I remember correctly.
My mom sounds like this. Expect she isn't sick or dead and I am the youngest in my family! :) and this song is the best ever! :) I loved this song and I hope that, if I ever have to be like this then my daughter or mother whatever the case will listen to this and think of me, many of my friends think this song reminds them of me!!!! Is that a good thing? haha
i listen to black veil brides, my chemical romance, panic! at the disco, and fall out boy. you call me emo? well, I FREAKING LOVE REBA! and kenny chesney, brooks and dunn, sugarland, little big town, and garth brooks. stuff that in your juice box and suck it! ha!
@Courtabaltaney that's not even it. her mom knew her daughter would someday get away from that and she did. she became a lady, and she got everything she ever wanted.
@pageantcrazy23 me too! lol i started runnin demolition derby's when I was 15 with my uncle bill, rest his soul, and I listened to this very song before every derby! GOD IT PUMPS ME UP!!!! LOL btw i am NOT gay, just a HUGE Reba fan!
@omega311888 Have you heard the song? That IS the point. "Fancy" talks about how she got where she is because she became a hooker. Real nice role-model.
@FuzzBean84 if you don't like the song why were you listening to it? what's the point of coming on here? to comment and say you don't like it? geez. chill your sack. xP
The song is just telling the story. It's supposed to shock the listener and say, "Wow, that's sad that she could only get that far from prostitution." Reba's not endorsing prostitution, just giving a hooker's view on her line of work.
my names katleen im 12 i love reba's music me & my mom wish we could see reba my mom would love to see her before she dies but she not dieing bt i love to sing and one day i hope i get to sing by the most best country singer ever
p.s. reba rocks ilove facy the song i look up to that song the most :D
I am like obbsesed with reba mcentire annd i LOVE her !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway you did a really god job with the llyrics. this is the one i always use when i listen to fancy. me and my aunt always rock to this song when its on in the car lol. GOOD JOB
It's definitely "ain't been back" not "ain't done bad." It's two clear "B" sounds in the last two words.
Regardless, I can't believe some thought this song was about something other than prostitution... It's a Southern Gothic song about a girl from a poverty-stricken family that is thrusted into city as a prostitute because her mother believed it was her only way out. The song makes it clear throughout that the mother has very mixed feelings about doing this to her daughter.
My dream is to become a singer and/or songwriter. I write songs and love to sing and music is my life. So thank you in advance for every who can help make my dream come true by listening to one of my videos of me singing!

@QueenRae96 mee too lol..im not sayin im ugky because im not but if i could not wear makeup and bumm it out and still look good tht would be AHHHMAZING!!
@jbx7777 The baby is her little brother or sister. They have no money for food or anything so the people from welfare took it and put it in foster care. She probably never sees it again
"Fancy" is a song written and originally performed by Bobbie Gentry in 1969. The song depicts its heroine's overcoming poverty to become a successful courtesan. the term courtesan has become a euphemism to designate an escort or a prostitute, especially one who attracts wealthy clients.
@relewis7 Wow. I didn't know that. Thank you for that piece of information. I knew it didn't happen to Reba, herself, but I had no idea someone had done that song prior to her. I'm going to look up Bobbie Gentry and listen to his version. Thanks again. And also, I never heard the word "courtesan" in my life. So, I just added a new word to my vocabulary.
@sjawna no she wasn't she dressed her like a whore then told her to be nice to the gentlemen. She was telling her this may be the only way she can get out of poverty.
@sjawna THE SONG IS ABOUT PROSTITUTION IF U CAN'T HEAR THAT THEN U ARE DUMB AND DEAF..HOW CAN U EVEN SAY ITS ABOUT HER GETTING MARRIED AND SHE DIDN'T EVEN GET MARRIED IN THE SONG...
@TalismanTImes either way i luv the song..any of them fancy's or want to be fancy's lets make this happen..alot of money to get and time ain't waiting..
@true6lue it is more than prostitution. it is about being on hard ship and rising above it. loosing her mother and baby sister. mom did what she thought was best. she was not angry at her mom. she thought if she did not go though the hard times she did she would not know how to succeed and make it
She was not a "prostitution" 2 me...It's more like a song about making it with what you have. Example : People "prostitute themselves everyday"...the Judge who looks the other way, when he and the Defence atty...a friend...says "if this case goes well, the wife and kids are going to out time share in Hawaii...oh youve never been,go and have 2 weeks on "us"...To the Managed Care CEO's who say that this saves money-but her salary is 8 Million a year... Fancy had to "use what she had"
When I was little I remember loving this song, not knowing what it was about. I went around 9 years without ever hearing it and it got stuck in my head somehow so I looked it up here, and realised it was about prostitution :o (I used to think she had to look pretty to marry rich or something) I still love it :)
