Eric's dad built him a practice house in his back yard in LA. I had the opportunity to interview his parents sometime ago. They shared a lot with me about Eric's life & music. Eric was a very disciplined child and musician.
What's sad is that Eric Dolphy would be dead just a few months later. I bet he stayed there in Europe while Mingus and everyone else headed back to the States. Absolutely tragic. What a loss to music and the world...
Okay, what is it that Dolphy's doing during his solo that sounds like a Wah-Wah pedal? It's not, obviously, just because of the date, but it sounds so much like it!
Talk about a tight, close-knit group! Does Mingus ever close the space. I love Johnny Coles, and Clifford Jordan made the best album in the 1970s--"Glass Bead Games" (the bassist is Bill Lee, Spike's dad). Yep, that's Jackie (beautiful piano solo, w and wout support) and Danny and . . . aha! Dophy (of course) on bass clarinet (no challenger yet). This was released on CD not long ago.
wachita 15, not sure I understand you, which may be my problem, not yours. By "form" I mean stuff like Bird, Trane, Garland, Miles, Pepper and others repeating the main theme during solos to anchor their improv and also, if it's a good tune, use that tune's basic beauty. Such gives form. Besides, you can't get every idea out; must compromise. There's always the next time.
@derailleur2 "There's not enough time for (Dolphy) to get everything out." I've gotten more appreciation for Dolphy. Re Trane: Am listening to his "But Not For Me" these days, and it just soars . Dolphy below Bird/Trane not because of his comparable command but because he'ss careless about FORM. Joyce doesn't know when to shut up in "Ulysses." Oscar P. ditto in almost everything. ED like supreme juggler--most oranges at once.
@soclarc I havent listend to too much of Dolphy, but in this video he follows the form pretty damn good on his solo, its the rest who jump in randomly
Love that 1 6 2 5 substitution that Byard uses in his stride-style solo. Like how he plays the bridge in F by going F, Ab, Db, Gb. These guys rocked the boat of tradition
Gotta love Byard's cheeky rag taking it back to 1910 in counterpoint to Dolphy's incandescent futurism. Check out the look Mingus gives him at 3:22, as if to say 'He's a crazy mf, but he's my brother.' Respect to all of these guys.
@1953elgordo Thank you for the info . Dolphy is always cool !
I like Mingus very much because his music is so unique & original : His style is neither just bluesy hard bop nor cool jazz. nor free ,and not also MONK or Miles. Sometime i feel like his music is that every musical factor is being played at the same time.
Dilky01: Maybe I should think of Dolphy not as playing LONG solo lines but as a miniaturist playing short lines each discrete and replaced quickly with others: loosely connected chapters. I've been been trained to expect longer lines by Bird, Trane et al. Mingus is a genius, so I have to pay attention. But I still think solos need to fly, not flock. But there's no one aesthetic, I admit.
Jerkicus, I'm still trying. Thanks for the post. Beauty definitely in eye of beholder. In my eye (or ear) Bird experiments to make beautiful, transporting lines (or, in jazz, licks); Dolphy experiments but for me it's like being in those little collision cars that used to be at carnivals. Collision of sounds. I don't know a flatted fifth from a Wild Turkey one, but Bird has fleet logic; Dolphy (I hate this cliche) isn't for me connecting the dots. Not going anywhere.
@soclarc "Eric had such a big sound, as big as Charlie Parker's," Mingus claimed. "Inside that sound was great capacity to talk in his music about the most basic feelings. He knew that level of language which very few musicians get down to."
Yeah, well John Cage understood musical theory and structure, too. He's seldom heard not because he had a lot of theory in his head. He thrashes dully, unlike Bartok, Copland, Glass, Adams.
There are many who say they can "play." "Jumping octaves" and "playing with themes" can be, doesn't have to be, mere gymnastics. "Play" can cover many sins.
(Mendali, that's a good comment. I'll take your advice.)
What's all the excitement about Dolphy? You are kidding, right? Do you know the structure of the tune? Are you aware of how he is moving around it, jumping octaves and playing with themes? Dude, if you don't understand musical theory or structure, please do not comment in a forum with those who do - and can play.
What' s all the excitement about Dolphy? Miles Davis was right about him: he doesn't transport you. Jazz solos that are good sail, swing, move, take you along. Dolphy is like an airplane that can't rise off the runway. Mingus looks pretty bored leaving and returning to the stage during E.D.s solo. The other players smile tolerantly. And, as per one comment, "Rite of Spring"? Man, I don't hear any of that in E.Ds solo. E.D. has ED in a metaphorical sense.
@soclarc I hate to tell you, but you're just not listening hard enough. Dolphy's note choices are odd, but his phrasing is impeccable. His rhythmic choices are no stranger than Monk's.
@soclarc I would say that Dolphy is like a bird that can fly- not an airplane that is fighting gravity. His imagination and total control of his instrument ( whichever one he chooses to pick up) rival Coltrane and there's not enough time for him to get everything out......peace out.
i love the juxtaposition of how seemingly staight the arrangement of the song is while dolphy plays his anything-but-straight solo. perfect. too bad he didnt live longer. a truly tragic loss to the music/art world
"In me ci sono tre persone. La prima occupa sempre il centro, indifferente, senza preoccupazioni, senza emozioni, osserva e aspetta l'occasione per esprimere quello che vede alle altre due. La seconda è come un animale spaventato che attacca perché teme di essere attaccato. E poi c'è una persona piena di amore, che permette agli altri di penetrare nel sancta sanctorum del proprio cuore…" :-)
These are all superb musicians but Dolphy's "Rite of Spring" inspired solo is pure and daring genius. The drummer is raw, relentless, sophisticated, surprising, dignified, restrained, refined, clever and magnificent: He masterfully holds this whole set together.

I love this performance. I have it on VHS but looking for it on DVD. If anyone knows how to secure this performance please PM me. Thank you for the post!
A possible reason for Eric's frustration may have been due to the rhythm section entering and establishing a downbeat 1 on his beat 4. I felt totally out of sync when the rhythm section entered and after hearing it a few times more I would think this may have been the case. I especially enjoy the smiles between Johnny and Clifford during Eric's solo near the end. Gotta love it!
@dmbdlb50 Yeah and I think he had another 8 bars left in the chorous he was in the middle of too, in fairness to Mingus its dam hard to tell where Eric's at.
every time I hear the Jaki Byard piano solo it beats negative emotions out. Always make me happy and get a laugh. :D love it...thanks for reuploading....keep this thing alive
@afroeroticus If you would do your research I think you would find that Eric Dolphy never did drugs, never smoked, never even drank. According to those around him at the time, he lived a very ascetic life. Mingus described him as a saint.
LOL dolphy looks soooo pissed at 7:33!!!! he's just doing his thing soloing and then all of a sudden the drums smash back in with piano and dolphy just looks up disgusted, even stops playing and throws his hand up....ahhhh these are the funniest moments in jazz to watch, miscommunication....but it's the worst to play through. been there done that, feel bad for em.
@slick82958 Mingus appears to be in on the tutti, so I'm assuming it was planned. Dolphy I think puts his palm up in the air as a way of saying thanks anyway for the applause even though he messed up a few notes around 6:45 and even though people were talking over his solo. But there's no way he could have been pissed about a tutti, especially when Mingus had time during the solo to leave the room, take a leak and slowly stroll back to his bass.
@slick82958 I think I figured it out ... Mingus didn't leave to take a leak, he just went over to shut a door behind which a bunch of people were talking too loudly and interfering with Dolphy's solo. Dolphy was probably trying to apologize to the audience for the extra intrusive noise of the talk-a-holics in that other room.
@slick82958 I have heard from a friend of mine who is a big Dolphy fan that Eric is pissed because the band came in wrong. Try to count your way through the solo and see if you can tell where his is. For about two choruses you can distinguish the A section from the bridge and then it gets REALLY hard. So for Mingus to have left the room or gotten distracted by something else I think it's likely that he had even less of an idea where Eric was and arbitrarily called the other musicians in.
although I agree 100% with 909kong Eric Dolphy is THE MAN my college (Le Moyne) even has a day dedicated to him and in about 20 minutes they are going to unveil a statue of him on campus and even though most students think it's just get wasted day it really is DOLPHY DAY
OH MY GOSH there is actually a solo with a bass clarinet i my cry this is the first time i'vever seen this i m about to hypervenilate NIIKKI you should see this!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU GO MAN!!! I AM IN LOVE WITH YOU!!
(If you can guess play the very under appritiated instrument the Bass Clarinet in band)
Pretty funny how Mingus counts in in the middle of the form during Dolphy's Solo. You can see at about 7:35 he lifts his hand as if to say, "What the F#@K?"
I doubt that he wasn't digging it...probably just giving Dolphy his solo space. If he wasn't digging it, I'm sure he woulda knocked the sax out of Dolphy's mouth!
Man, This is Amazing! So my Question is, why didn't you play the whole thing? This sounds like the exact ensemble that played on Cornell 1964 & played A Train past 17 minutes, but this is even better. I really want this recording if it's available. And the video too. Dolphy's solo is amazing. Mingus could put together some serious arrangements of the Duke's (& Strayhorn's) compositions.
Seconding this. I'd love to get my hands on even just an audio copy of this. I presumed it would be the Cornell recording aswell, but its far better. Any ideas where it can be bought?
No idea. In fact, I've got 2.25 gigs of Mingus tracks and I know it's the same Sextet and must be the same tour as on Cornell 1964. What kills me is they do have the video obviously. And if this ripped video has reduced audio so that the original audio is superior, they could make at least this track available. This arrangement blows away an already amazing 17+ min A train arrangement. I like how dolphy is earlier. And he really lights it up.
seriously! where i live the few jazz enthusiasts are considered weird and unnatural. when i tell people i was in my high school jazz band i get the 'deer in the headlights' look and they immediately change the subject
Dude, jazz is alive! And there are great players too today. It's just that there's a little less motivation for average players to train as madly as these guys, because there's so much technology and stuff going on nowadays that it's easy to get distracted. But anyways, there is and will always be good players out there.
Johnny Coles plays a beautiful solo. And watch him smile after playing the background riffs during Dolphy's solo. He is enjoying it. Great great players, great band!!!
Is there some album released of this exact concert?

Pretty funny how Mingus counts in in the middle of the form during Dolphy's Solo. You can see at about 7:35 he lifts his hand as if to say, "What the F#@K?"
Tranetracks 1 year ago
@Tranetracks Haha, yeah, Mingus should've given Dolphy a little more time! 20 more minutes would have been nice.

There is a set of two cds that the sextet did in Stuttgart with similar material to the Cornell session. The quality is extraordinary.

This is great but it could really use some distorted guitar in there like John Mayer or Prince.

Mingus & Dolphy get tragically overlooked too often - amazing soul and talent.

Excellent footage, but I wasn't expecting Mingus to walk off in the middle of Dolph's solo... guess he wasn't digging it!
tompeth 2 years ago 2
I doubt that he wasn't digging it...probably just giving Dolphy his solo space. If he wasn't digging it, I'm sure he woulda knocked the sax out of Dolphy's mouth!

Man, This is Amazing! So my Question is, why didn't you play the whole thing? This sounds like the exact ensemble that played on Cornell 1964 & played A Train past 17 minutes, but this is even better. I really want this recording if it's available. And the video too. Dolphy's solo is amazing. Mingus could put together some serious arrangements of the Duke's (& Strayhorn's) compositions.
benmillerintx 2 years ago 3
well if i were you i wouldn't search google for the word "dirpy" and i wouldn't download the mp3 of this video from that website.. ;)
willshakeyou 1 year ago 3
Seconding this. I'd love to get my hands on even just an audio copy of this. I presumed it would be the Cornell recording aswell, but its far better. Any ideas where it can be bought?
jbs4em 1 year ago
And he really lights it up.

seriously! where i live the few jazz enthusiasts are considered weird and unnatural. when i tell people i was in my high school jazz band i get the 'deer in the headlights' look and they immediately change the subject
ibanezzer81 2 years ago 2
Dude, jazz is alive! And there are great players too today. It's just that there's a little less motivation for average players to train as madly as these guys, because there's so much technology and stuff going on nowadays that it's easy to get distracted. But anyways, there is and will always be good players out there.

New to Mingus and Eric Dolphy with his bass clarinet will be looking for CDs quickly. Love this sh*t!!

Johnny Coles plays a beautiful solo. And watch him smile after playing the background riffs during Dolphy's solo. He is enjoying it. Great great players, great band!!!
