it's not all taxes... the advertised amount is what it would be after 30 years of investment... The lump sum that people take is the actual dollar value of the payout. If you take annuity, they invest that over 29 years or whatever and that's where the bigger number comes from.

If you take the cash option, the real value is usually about half. Then you get 25% taken off for federal taxes, plus whatever your state taxes (if at all).
