@userboy6 - The song is the in the Key of F. The I, IV and V chords, as you mentioned (F, Bb, and C). The way it's arranged, it similar to a blues form, except the aforementioned chords are major instead of dominant. Without really sitting down to transcribe & analyze the solo and harmony, it sounds like the solo is based on major pentatonic scales for each the IV & V chords (Bb maj pent and C maj pent) and then based an F minor pentatonic scale to finish the solo.
Thanks much for posting this. I've had a hard time with this for years because that whole rockabilly style is like sideways to me...if you get into the habit of doing traditional blue-type bends and double stops this is like another language;-) Thanks again!
@userboy6 Yes I think when I figured it out I remember considering doing it in F as well, as that seemed to be where it was. The signature lick though with the rolloffs sounds like something done with the open strings, so I tuned up and did it in E, figured maybe they were tuned up for that. Very likely it's in F though.. all you would have to do is play each note on the video up one fret, and you'd have it.
@playguitarsolos - it's not abnormal for a producer to speed up a mix to give it more energy. This was done on Bruce Springsteens 'born in the usa' final mix. maybe it's done here as well.

So pissed, I had the full tab in a guitar mag but wasn't good enough to play the bit after the chorus and solo with the muted strings etc. I don't have the mag anymore and feel confident enough to give it a crack. So thanks for this and if anyone knows how to play that bit I would really appreciate it if they could provide.
@ninja1018 In the recording it's actually played in standard tuning but the track is sped up making it up half a tone according to the guitar one magazine I had.
Thanks for posting this. I've only ever seen this tabbed accurately once in a guitar mag years ago and really regretted not buying it at the time. You nailed it note perfect. Nice going.
Yeah, guys, put a capo on fret 1 if you want this to sound right. You could actually tune each string up a half step, but be careful to not snap anything.
Thanks so much, like a lot of Cars songs, I learned these solos kind of half-assed when they first came out, and have played them about 85% right all these years. Thanks to you I can get it correct.
pease ive beeen looking everywhere and i cant find the guitar part after ha say "and she used to be mine" so if anyone saw an instructional vid or or tab (that sounds right) pleas message me the link
I am also looking in vain for that tab. That part is based on a riff in the Beatles song called "I will" but I cannot find the tab for either after searching. And unfortunately I do not have the ear to decipher that simple pielce.
1:14 i cant make it sound right

Elliot Easton was Berkley trained and it shows. One of my favorites creative players. Great job man. I could have sworn I saw him play it in E live.

it sounds to me like the song is written in the key of F(F, Bb, C) and Elliots solo is in the minor third or key of Ab, any opinions?

what do they tune it down a half step for this song or something?
ninja1018 1 year ago
@ninja1018 It's actually up a half step. You can either tune up or put a capo on the first fret and do everything relative to the capo.

Try guitar pro, you'll learn it in no time.
Costs money to download the program, but it
works. If they have the music, you don't have
to do it by ear.
