  • Ha Ha Ha!!! You spent the time to cue up and post this video, and you don't even understand the rules of baseball! You want to blame Joe Buck for not noticing it, why wouldn't any of the Rangers, feet away from the action protest? Ohhh, because they know the rules!!!

  • for everyone that says this is a fair ball: So if a ball is hit straight back into a rail behind home plate and then bounces into fair territory, with out hitting anyone, that ball would be fair too? This doent make sense to me.

  • @troyleestevens That's because the ball becomes dead when it hits the railing. This ball didn't hit anything in foul ground that would cause it to become dead.

  • @rosey1952 OK, thanks for clearing that up for me. Makes sense now. GO RANGERS!!

  • @troyleestevens

If a ball in foul territory hits anything but the playing field, it's a foul ball.

Wherever the ball stops rolling on the infield determines if it's a fair or foul ball. It doesn't matter if the ball hits the ground foul first or not.

That's why Cruz was arguing in the 9th. The batted ball skimmed his toe in foul territory, so it should have been a foul ball. Tough call for the umpire, as it barely grazed his foot.

It's pretty simple guys. Stop over-thinking it.

  • Oops...meant Beltre, not Cruz.

  • @troyleestevens The difference here being, hit a rail. Hits a rail, the ball is dead and play is over. Hits the ground, five feet on the outside of the foul line and rolls back in (somehow) its a fair ball.

  • Think about a bunt...If it is bunted into foul teritory and rolls fair...it's a fair ball. If a batted ball hits foul and goes past the bag or over the bag in fair teritory...It's a fair ball. Learn the rules BOY.

  • Read the rules; define the words, "settles" and "bounds". If you do that, you will understand that Berkman's hit was a hit and not a foul ball.

  • Oh, and Jimmy, foul tips are batted balls that go directly off or to the catcher's mitt, or hand, and are caught by the catcher. No one's ever been hit by a foul tip.

  • It's amazing that so many baseball fans don't know the simple rules of their sport.

    That's a fair ball, kids.

  • There is nothing to "catch". This is a fair ball.

  • READ the rules...NO BALL THAT hits foul first can become fair--THAT is only balls in the AIR. The bunt rule ONLY applies to where a ball STOPS or is PICKED up ONLY because it is still IN PLAY until it stops and is called dead or is picked up foul and called foul. That bunt situation is not what happened here. The ball HIT foul territory cleanly....that with the Beltre foul off his foot gives the Rangers the WIN.....by rights....

  • @rbfitz0529 a ball can roll in foul territory all the way down the 1st base line, and if it skips back fair before crossing 1st base, it will be ruled a fair ball.

  • @rbfitz0529

    No, you're wrong.

You are totally screwing up and misinterpreting the rule.

The only time a ball is foul when it first touches foul territory, is a fly ball that lands in foul territory beyond first or third base. On the infield, it isn't foul until it stops rolling in foul territory.

Ground ball...starts foul...rolls fair...goes by first base in fair territory. That is a fair ball. That is baseball 101 and stuff you (well, not you apparently) learn in little league.

    GO CARDS!!

  • @rbfitz0529 That is not true. It is not only for balls hit in the air. The ball was still in play. This is simple baseball dude. You don't know what you are talking about. If this was a real issue, how come the Rangers didn't protest?

  • fair ball all the way, a bunt that starts out along the foul side but rolls fair is the same way, it a fair ball by the rules of baseball

  • This was clearly a fair ball, and I'm a Rangers fang. That said, anyone who thinks Beltre's WASN'T a foul ball is an idiot.

  • @Moxin Sure, Beltre's hit in the 9th was a foul ball, but even the thermal camera replay showed it was so close that I couldn't fault an ump for missing it. I BARELY touched the edge of his shoe. Of course, he acted like he had gotten nailed. With there not being a sound like that of a ball off of the shoe, the ump was probably reacting more to Beltre's overacting than anything. They even looked for scuff marks on the ball. Non-issue.

  • Go Cardinals!!!!

A FOUL BALL is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first

base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul

territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that, while on or

over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the

    natural ground.

  • That is a FAIR ball. A foul ball is a batted ball that: * Settles on foul territory between home and first base or between home and third base, or * Bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or * First falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or * While on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground.

This did not stop nor get touched in foul territory, and went past the bag fair.

  • It passed the base fair, its a fair ball. LEARN THE RULES. Beltre deserves an academy award for the act he did in the ninth.

  • die hard rangers fan, but it had to be fair based on where it landed in the outfield and where it hit foul in the infield. it just has to be between the lines when it passes the bag. but beltre got screwed big time fouling off his foot

  • The foul tip off of Beltre's shoe was BS.

  • @jimmygribnitz His acting like his foot hand been nailed when it barely grazed the shoe was pretty funny, though.

  • If you think this is foul, you're wrong. lol.

  • I though the same thing when I saw it, but had to check the rule book. If the ball comes back around the bag in fair territory, even though it hit foul ground to start, it's fair.

  • A ball that first touches the ground in the infield (in fair or foul territory) before first or third base, is not judged to be fair or foul until it stops or is touched by a player or an umpire or bounds beyond first or third base, or touches first or third base, or passes over first or third base. If it hits the ground on the home plate side of first or third and passes over the base on its way to the outfield; it is a fair ball.

  • @jimmygribnitz Ill take that. I stand corrected

  • Completely agree. Ball hit foul just outside the batter's box. Obvious on the replays. I was surprised when the commentators didn't mention it on the replay.

  • @drdecanto A ball is not foul until it is touched in foul territory, or crosses 1st or 3rd base in foul territory. Baseball 101. Commentators (and all of the Rangers present didn't challenge because they know the rules. You don't.

  • @voodoochild1138

Apparently I didn't know that rule. Learn something new every day. I get it now when it is compared to a bunt that can roll back fair.

  • @drdecanto It's cool. No harm. no foul. Get it?

  • Yea, was waiting on someone to catch it. They only replayed it once and didn't say a thing.

  • @greennova1 That is a fair ball, not bs. Check my comment for the definition of a foul ball.

  • @greennova1 I stand corrected
