That has happen to me. I caught a huge perch so I put it on the stringer and a bass was sucking on it the whole time. So when I pulled it up it was nothing but a head.
had that happen to me once in my life. was walleye fishin and a pike came up grabbed the walleye and took my line back down. ended up netting the walleye after the pike finally let go. but the fish was trashed.
Haha thats awesome. We got muskies where I live but not pike. They get huge too we had a 32 pound, 48 inch musky caught not far from my house this summer I think it's the official state record now. Nice pike btw
also, reading comments about saying you hold it like that for lure action?
that's a load of crap. only someone from manitoba or ontario would believe that. out farther west, people know better.
again, if you were right, the charters, guides, and professional anglers on some famous monster pike lakes like, tobin, wollaston, reindeer, selwyn, athabasca to name a fistfull... would be doing that... we don't.
@attananightshadow "only someone from manitoba or ontario would believe that" Actually, only idiots would believe that. The last time I checked, idiots came from all over the continent. Not just one or two provinces. I'm willing to bet that a number of the people saying that he's holding it for lure action are from farther out west as well, where you claim they know better.

a baitcasting rod will also have the spine on the 'top' of the rod, the only difference is guide placement which is also on the top for a casting rod, guides on the bottom for a spinning rod.
just look it up if you don't believe me and you'll become a more effective angler because you'll be maximizing the performance designed in the equipment you're using.
so by having the rod reversed, as is the case here, the spine of the blank is on the bottom and is taking the initial shock and directional changes in the blank as opposed to the body of the blank.
put into another logical comparison, fishing it upside down like this is like being punched in the back instead of the chest. what will have a greater chance of doing damage?
talk to any proper rod maker like g-loomis or st. croix and you'll get a similar answer.
when rod makers 'roll' the graphite and form the blank, it forms a seam or 'spine' in the rod. the spine should be on the top of a spinning rod as it will properly distribute load throughout the rod and create better directional stability when under load.
you can feel this by gently rolling the rod with light pressure from your fingers.
it's the same reason our spines are at the back of our body and not the front.
Mountsberg does have some good size crappies. I have never fished for them. I am usually using jerk baits for the pike. Seen lots of crappies caught though!
Hey ShutUpAndFishCanada, you don't see pike that big at Mountsberg too often. I went during the day and only got 1. Usually I hear it is best to go early morning when the sun is just coming up and you can get big numbers like 20+ pike.
Hey Elite, the big fish are there but the problem is all the little guys are so aggressive, they always jump for the bait first. Also to get the big ones you are better off fishing with larger baits. It takes a lot of energy for a pike to chase a meal. If its a bigger meal and its more worth it for them you have better odds. Yes I do like going first thing in the morning when the lake is like glass! But even when I have gone in the afternoon I have still caught 10 - 50 fish.
Another point to consider is how hard that lake gets fished. Your best bet is to get there opening day(first Sat in May) and as early as possible. And I mean EARLY! I get there at 6am and there are at least 10 boats already out. The first couple weekends at Mountsberg are the best because the weeds are really low and water is high. You get a lot of casts in without the vegetation on your line. Also lots of fish cause they haven't seen a lure since the fall! No ice fishing!
@ShutUpAndFishCanada - No, only caught one and I didn't bring my BB with me. Was hoping to catch one like you caught but no dice. The water level is really low there now.
@ItalianMuscle88 Only one for real? What were you using? With the heat of the summer and almost no rain all the lakes have been low. Too bad you didn't catch more! hopefully the rain today will bring up the levels. I think I might head out there early Sat morning to see what I can get. How were the weeds?
@ShutUpAndFishCanada - Ya we were using Cleo spinners. Weeds were pretty bad. We did manage to find some holes but the area of lake across from boat launch was really shallow. I hope it did. Good luck dude, let me know how it went.
@ItalianMuscle88 When the water is low and the weeds are thick I like to hit it first thing in the morning. The earlier the better! When the water is like glass. Throw top water baits over or on the edge of the weeds. I wouldn't suggest a popper only because if a big pike comes up when its sitting there, its a good chance he will snap your line. So use something like a zara spook or an x-walk and keep it moving with the walk the dog action. Also try a floating rapala/thunderstick. Good luck!
nice slime gator especially for that lake considering all the poaching that happens there by people just fresh off the boat to "our" country, thanks for posting and catch & release is good for spawners like that, and for them people bitching & complaining about how he's holdin his rod upside down; who cares its his gear n tackle he can do what he wants with it,
@sickznations666 Thanks for the comment! I always practice catch and release with the big spawners cause I know they will be out there again for another catch and reproduce in the lake! Cheers
wow holy shit. At first i figured you were just black, that why you were reeling like that but then i see your white. You've disgraced our kind.... WHY¿?¿
i uses creels in the river instead of stringers becuase of this lol that pike waited for you to pause the small fish.that pike deleberatly intended on robbing your fish and was unsucsessfully.they follow boats to rip off your fish.i wont hear anything otherwise.people who tube big rivers and dangle thier feet are nuts lol hahahaha nice vid man.use your tackle as you see fit.it is used wrong though not meant to bend that way.switch the handle...
@ShereKhan77 Ya we have had this happen a few times and we were just lucky to have the camera rolling for this one! Yesterday I had a perch on and a big small mouth bass came and chomped him! The reel upside down is how you catch the big ones ;)
@ShutUpAndFishCanada being in canada helps.jersey is dirty and we got em but they are rampid up there.tight lines! great post man! it all about having a rolling camera or someone camera ready.good deal man and watch your fingers hahahaha
@ShutUpAndFishCanada get a baitcaster your going to break your spinning rod holding it that way they are not designed to be used that way .Nice pike though and ya have a good net man to land that thing with no hooks in it !
@ShutUpAndFishCanada why do you hold it like that? is it normal for you to do that? because the rod isn't made for bending that way it can bend but it doesnt like to. and the lip holder is not for holding the fish only the lip.. that made you really un pro just like an idiot not knowing what his stuff is for
@legoman844 Definately worth going to! I much prefer it in May/June because when you go in there now its loaded very heavily with weeds. I still go from time to time and I always get fish but I find May/June to be best.
AWesome what an experience you are the guys that have the honey harbour video can u still tell me were u launched and fish at honey harbour please! thanks.
